Received 4423 Heavy Duty Sewing Machine on 12/5/2012. Great working first time. On second time using it I was unable to pick up bobbin thread with needle. Machine now in repair shop. Can't wait to get it back because it works great when sewing through thick materials. I look forward to getting it back.

I love this machine. I have been sewing for over 40 years, and I can tell you that this is a wonderful machine. I am blown away by the price, for all that it does. This machine also gets 5 stars for ease of use. So simple to operate. I have a hard time with computerized machines, that why I bought this one. I don't have any problem understanding how to use it. At the present time I have it sitting on a wooden TV tray and it is working like a champ. It isn't moving around at all.

Wonder what happened

I used it twice before the feed dogs broke, and I only used 2 layers of denim, hemming my jeans. I cannot afford to send it to the service places, so I have to find a different machine. I am very disappointed and will not buy another singer.

"A Guy Machine"

I'm a 66 year old male and I needed a "guy machine" not a wimpy to many buttons kind of machine. Don't get me wrong the Singer 4423 has lots of extras. The 4423 was the perfect choice. I'm big in the belly and short in the legs so I always have a problem with pants that are too long legged. It cost me $8.00 every time I had my pants hemmed up. The Singer 4423 does the job easily. Like I said I'm a little too round so button popping is also a problem. The 4423 has an easy button sewing foot. No more sticking my fingers trying to hand sew those suckers. Oh and my eyes are a bit tired so threading a needle has always been a challenge. No more, the singer 4423 has a really great built in threader. At 1100 stitches per minute it made fast work of some black-out curtains I made for my t.v. room. the Singer 4423 is so much fun to use I'm constantly looking around my house to find something to sew. For instance my dogs chew up their stuffed toys. But now they are happy because I can sew up their toys instead of throwing them out. There, another savings. The 4423 has already paid for itself. My 92 year old mother has a Singer she bought during WW2. She still has it and it still works perfectly. That's why I knew my 4423 would be a great machine. Love it-love it-love it.

A wonderful machine (particularly at this price point)

I purchased this machine about 2 years ago. It has been wonderful! I find it easy to use and durable. I have used the machine for other things, but mostly I have done quilting. I am in the process of completing my 3rd quilt. The machine has a nice straight stitch - handles piecing well. When quilting, the machine seems to handle 3 layers (fabric/batting/fabric) with no problem or issue. I purchased a Singer walking foot. That foot works great for straight line quilting. I have tried some free motion quilting using a Singer darning foot. I am not an expert yet, but I'm making progress. I particularly like the following features: 1) Versatility of the machine. Lots of stitches including more than I need of decorative stitches. Easy controls for varying stitch width and length. Easy to vary upper tension. Easy to find different feet if/when I want them. Easy to change feet. Easy (but not too easy) to go in reverse. 2) Solid feel. The machine is heavy enough to stay in place when I sew. I like that it has at least some metal in the frame. 3) Needle threader. 4) Easily visible bobbin. I can see when I am about to run out of bobbin thread. 5) Built-in thread cutter. Not "automatic" but automatic is not important to me. It would be even better if the machine had the following features: 1) Longer arm length 2) Better lighting 3) Automatic needle down option 4) Speed control feature (for free motion quilting) I have seen some negative reviews on this machine. Some of the negative comments lead me to believe that the reviewers have little experience with sewing machines. For example: 1) it is CRUCIAL to properly thread a machine and bobbin. Machines act up (badly) when not properly threaded. 2) It is NOT WISE to try to sew over pins. REMOVE pins well before your needle gets to them. 3) When trying something new, first READ THE DIRECTIONS. Start stitching SLOWLY. If the machine jams, DON'T force it. Speed up only AFTER you know the machine is doing what you want.

I have been sewing for the better part of 40 years. I purchased a basic Singer sewing machine back in 1985 and retired it just a few years ago. When I went to replace it I was given two different Singers, a Singer Traditional and a Heavy Duty 4423. I find both machines to be great for basic sewing. However, I think the Tradition works as well as the 4423, except for the limitations in sewing heavy fabrics. I have sewn heavy costumes for many years and my original machine took a beating but kept on performing. This new machine is the best machine I have used to date. The only issue I have had with either is with a particular brand of thread. However, the machines themselves are working great! I hesitated buying a new machine, but my daughter purchased the 4423 so I could sew her a wedding dress. I have never worked with a machine that is so easy to use while performing difficult stitches through multiple layers of heavy material . The first project I sewed was a dress form using light material. It performed as expected. But when I went to sew a mother dress form out of heavier material it was a joy to work with. My next project will use leather with heavy duck fabric. So far the samples have all been exceptional. Thanks Singer!

To oil of not to oil?

To oil or not to oil? That seems to be the question - which nobody answers. Why not write replies to the reviews? Would that not be of more value than just publishing reviews? Yes, the machine is rather noisy, which is okay if one doesn't worry about it and keep wondering if it should not be oiled? Like so many reviewers I myself also have a 60/70 year old Singer, still in working order and would like to beat that record. So, if it needs oiling, like sewing machines usually do, I would like to know about it. Also wish there were a thing-y with which the empty bobbin can be lifted from the bobbin case when it is time to change the bobbin. And ah! Threading the needle ... if only, if only I could manage that! But I have a notion the problem here lies with me, not with the machine, but with me not properly knowing how to do it. Love the speed, love the heavy duty, love the fancy stitches, love the machine as a whole. Especially as it was a gift from my son - I can feel the love every time I use it!

Dancing Needle

I've had this machine for 6 months now and when I first got it I thought it was wonderful but quickly it became a nightmare. In the past 6 months I've had to take it in to be repaired 4 times due to the bobbin thread bunching and gathering under the fabric and the top thread only tacking once or twice every 10 stitches. This is my first machine, I used my grandmother's and mother's up until now, and I've noticed that the needle tends to swing back and forth every time I add a new bobbin in ... as a quilter that is frequently. The ladies at the sewing shop I take my machine to have commented several times on the strangeness of this and each time have agreed that I shouldn't continue to have problems as it isn't human error. I may simply have gotten a bad product but after over 100 years of Singer being the machine of choice in my family I can guarantee I'll be going else where with my next machine.
