Software needs work

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The hardware is decent. I wouldn't say it's audiophile quality. But watching movie in a small room, I have it in my den. It is fine.
However, Samsung expects everyone to have a symmetrical room, because their software doesn't allow you to set volume gain individually. Instead they expect that both left and right rear are exactly same distance apart from the listening position. Uhmmm good one Samsung. NO!
They need to allow adjustment of volume/gain L/R individually.

Hello,

We appreciate you taking a moment to review the Samsung HW-Q990F Soundbar.

The soundbar offers a wide range of audio adjustments to fine-tune the sound to your preferences. You can manually optimize your audio experience using the SOUND CONTROL button (identified by a gear icon) on the remote. This allows you to access and adjust settings like Auto EQ, SpaceFit Sound, AVA (Active Voice Amplifier), Voice Enhance Mode, Night Mode, Sync, Surround Speaker Mode, and Virtual Sound Mode. Use the Up and Down buttons to navigate and adjust each feature.

For more precise sound tuning, press and hold the SOUND CONTROL button for about five seconds. This enables you to adjust specific frequency bands, including 150Hz, 300Hz, 600Hz, 1.2kHz, 2.5kHz, 5kHz, and 10kHz. You can cycle through these frequencies using the Left and Right buttons, and adjust their levels between -6 and +6 using the Up and Down buttons.

If you’d prefer a quicker way to optimize your audio, simply press the SOUND MODE button on your remote and select from STANDARD, SURROUND SOUND, GAME, or ADAPTIVE SOUND modes based on your preference.

To fine-tune individual speaker channels, press the CH LEVEL button on your remote. This gives you control over levels for the Center, Side, Wide, Front Top, Rear, and Rear Top speakers. Once you've selected the desired channel, you can adjust its volume between -6 and +6 using the Up and Down buttons. There are also a couple of ways to adjust bass levels. The WOOFER button lets you increase or decrease bass by pushing forward or pulling back, with a range between -12 and +6. Pressing the button inward will reset the bass to 0. Alternatively, the TONE CONTROL button allows you to adjust both bass and treble levels within a -6 to +6 range.

For even greater convenience, you can manage all of these settings and more through the SmartThings app on your iOS or Android device. After connecting your soundbar to Wi-Fi, the app gives you a user-friendly interface to adjust and view settings right from your phone or tablet.

I hope these tips help you enjoy your new product.

Samsung Sound Only Way to Go!
on November 8, 2025

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I hooked up my Q series (Q600F) Sound Bar and Subwoofer to my Samsung Smart TV. No set up needed. Wow! The sound is so much better especially the bass, convenient too that I can use the TV volume controls to control the sound bar. No juggling remotes. Bluetooth options are easy peasy since my smartphone is also Samsung. (What can I say I'm a Samsung girl!) Great value for the price. Awesome sounding movies, tv shows and music videos.. what else could you ask for? Thanks Samsung!

HI Biohazard1992,

Thank you for taking a moment to review the HW-Q990F Samsung Soundbar. We value your feedback and will share it with our teams.

Please know, there are various settings you can adjust to improve your experience with the rear speakers.

You can adjust the volume of the rear speakers by using the remote included with the connected soundbar. Press the CH LEVEL button on the soundbar remote, then select REAR LEVEL and use the Up/Down buttons to adjust the volume within a -6 to +6 range.

Additionally, make sure that the source (e.g. TV output) is sending surround channels to the Soundbar. If you are using a format such as PCM, you may experience decreased volume to the rear speakers. Select Bitstream, Auto, or Pass-Through as these settings will allow the TV to send the correct channels to the rear speakers.

I hope these tips help to enhance your audio enjoyment. Should you need further assistance with this issue or have any questions, please contact Samsung Customer Support. Just give us a call at 1-800-SAMSUNG (Ask for Soundbars), 8AM - 12AM EST, 7 days a week. Our Live Chat agents are also available by clicking on the ‘Support’ link on our website.

Hello Gary,

We appreciate you taking a moment to review the Samsung HW-Q990F Soundbar.

Two adjustments can be made to maximize bass from the soundbar and subwoofer:
1. Using the WOOFER button on the remote, you can adjust the level between -6 to +6. To set the subwoofer volume level to 0, press the button in.

2. Adjust the bass control by pressing the TONE CONTROL button on the remote control, then select BASS to increase the level. You can adjust the volume between -6 to +6 by using the Up/Down buttons.

Alternatively, you can press and hold the SOUND CONTROL button for about 5 seconds to adjust the sound for each frequency band. 150Hz, 300Hz, 600Hz, 1.2kHz, 2.5kHz, 5kHz, and 10kHz are selectable using the Left/Right buttons and each can be adjusted to a setting between -6 to +6 using the Up/Down buttons.

You can adjust all of these same settings and more within the SmartThings app. Download the app for your iOS or Android device and then connect your Soundbar to Wi-Fi. From here, you will be able to adjust all of the same settings as the provided remote, but with the added benefit of being able to see the changes on your smart device.

I hope these tips help you enjoy your new product.

You can always contact us for further help at 1-800-SAMSUNG (Ask for Soundbars), 8 AM – 12 AM EST, 7 days a week. Our Live Chat agents are also available by clicking on the ‘Support’ link on our website.

Desperately needs a second sub!
on March 17, 2026
Posted by: jpayork
from Universal City, TX
Switched from a Klipsch Cinema series that I had dual subs running. I was expecting and willing to sacrifice some bass after reading reviews on this system but c'mon. This system either needs an upgraded sub or the ability to buy and pair a second sub. That being said, the immersive experience of the sound bar, minus the lack of bass, is very good, better than Klipsch. But if you want more robust sound, Klipsch. Not unhappy I switched to this Samsung, but I desperately hope they offer a secondary sub a la cart.
I would recommend this to a friend!

soundbar & rearspeakers great but subwoofer nope

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Good setup connection is a breeze the voice commands work lovely most of the time. On head ache I have with it all is this big huge speaker system is so called has horrible bass for such a big subwoofer and box. But you cant tune it so u can actually here it. I mean the whole system is beefy just the subwoofer falls straight on its face. The soundboard and rear speakers trys to come out with so.e bass but all u get us very load tremble and background noise but if u all could fix a bass that the subwoofer is supposed to push out then u all would be untouchable from any other brand out there. And make a super good equalizer and make sure u can tune the bass in as little or as much as u want then I would even put in a Lil more equalizer to make the sub hit like a earthquake mode that will really bring the system wattage level out to play.

Fantastic upgrade from my previous 5.1.4
on August 7, 2025

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've been looking at upgrading to a Q series for a while and finally was able to pull the trigger. My viewing area is 16x16 and this soundbar fills the space with such unbelievable sound. The wide, height and rears do a tremendous job of really enveloping you in total immersion.
I wish there were a few more settings in the smart things app to configure but overall the app is great. I use the Q990 in conjunction with the Samsung 75 inch TV and the Q symphony feature fills out the sound even more. I extensively tested it with and without and can say that as long as you have a good enough speaker in the TV it makes a very positive difference.
Overall very happy with this upgrade and I don't think I could ever go back. Couple this with a bluray player or Fandango for high quality streams in Atmos and you're in for a treat.

Hi Frustrated,

Thank you for taking a moment to review the Samsung HW-Q990F Soundbar.

Updating the firmware on your soundbar gives you all the benefits of the latest improvements. When the Soundbar is connected to the Internet, Auto Update allows software to update automatically even when the Soundbar is turned off. You can also update by using the SmartThings app.

If not connected to the internet, you can download it onto a USB device, and then upload it to your soundbar - no wireless connection required. Connect the USB drive that contains the update firmware to the SERVICE port of the Soundbar.

1.Go to the Samsung Electronics website (www.samsung.com) → click on the “Support” option in the upper left corner.
2.Click on “Manuals & Software” from the pop-up list > TVs & Home Theater > Home Theater > Select your model
2. Download the firmware file (USB type).
3. Unzip the file to create a folder with the file name.
4. Store the created folder in a USB and then connect it to the Soundbar.
5. A sequence of “UPDATE” > “BYE” > “ON” will appear on the display 3 times. This will take around 6 minutes.
- During update, do not turn it off or remove the USB.
- If “UPDATE” does not appear on the display window, remove the power cord from the Soundbar and then reconnect it.
- When the latest version is installed, no update is performed.
- Depending on the USB type, update may not be supported.
6. After the 3 cycles are complete, the Soundbar will restart and last source used will appear on the display for about 20 seconds and then it will go off (“UPDATE” > “BYE” > “ON”) 3 times “D.IN” > off

If you need more help, Samsung is here for you. Please call us at 1-800-SAMSUNG, 8AM - 12AM EST (Ask for Soundbars), 7 days a week. Live Chat with an agent as well as manuals, software, creating a service ticket, and warranty info can be found at the ‘Support’ link on our Samsung website.
