Slow to find GPS. Pace was very off.

I tried all troubleshooting outlets to figure out why the pace was approximately a full minute off per mile, but nothing helped. I wore my Apple Watch and my older Garmin, while wearing the new 45S. The Apple Watch and older Garmin were spot on. I recently returned the Garmin. Not sure I will purchase another Garmin. It was also difficult to use—not intuitive like my other forerunner.

Better than my old Forerunner 110
on August 20, 2019

I wanted a replacement for my old 110 and wanted something with a better GPS system and not too big. The Forerunner 45 uses Glonass and finds satellites in half the time of my old gps. I also like that the 45 has a cycling app which my old gps didn't have. For a few dollars more I could have gone with the Instinct which has hiking tracking, altimeter and compass, but was afraid that it would be too heavy for running. If I had it to do over again I think I would have gone with the Instinct because I don't think it would have been that heavy given how light the Forerunner 45 is, plus it would have better back country applications. The 45 does meet all my needs for running and cycling though.

Disappointing

This is my fourth or fifth Garmin in the last 10 years. I've used the forerunner 310 and 910 for tri's and the 35 for running. The previous models were great, the menus were intuitive, the buttons worked, sats were found relatively quickly. The 45 is the exact opposite of this. Several times I've had to start warming up before it found satellites, and most of the time my wife's Garmin has found them long before mine. When it does manage to connect the autopause is much different than previous generations, taking longer to register the pause and also the restart. The key difference here is that it doesn't register the distance you cover between stopping and starting. So if you stop 10 times per run and it takes 20 meters to register you are moving again, that means you lose 200 meters of your run. Navigating the menu was a disaster as well. It took me weeks to figure out how to turn off the beeping. Finally, the buttons seem weird. Maybe I double tapped today but somehow it just started chirping and trying to link with my phone in the middle of a track session. There is also an app to download new faces for this but it has yet to properly connect with the watch. This is very disappointing and not what I'm used to from Garmin. I would gladly go back to my 35 if it still worked.

Easy to see the numbers

Replaced my old Garmin that had to download every run to the computer. It would go maybe 8 hours in gps mode on a charge. The 45S will do close to 13 hours. Good for those all-day trails. Very easy to operate and saves automatically and wireless sync to Garmin Connect. I love it!

Running watch

I bought this two months ago. The only problem I have is if I walk out in yard, it disconnects from my phone and doesn’t reconnect when I get my phone. I have to shut the watch and turn back on.

Refused to pair
on August 20, 2019
Posted by: RunMommyRun
Initially the watch worked great. Did a couple runs and everything went according to plan. Then I went for a run and it refused to sync with the Garmin app. So I went through all the steps such as ensuring it was paired, etc. When nothing I did allowed it to sync I decided to remove it from the Garmin app and then simply add it back. Well that was an epic fail because after removing it the watch refused to pair with the Garmin app, my phone itself yes, but Garmin no. Tried the Garmin express on the computer and that didn’t work either. Contacted Garmin support and repeated all my prior steps, but it still wouldn’t pair. Support acknowledged that this apparently is an issue with quite a few of the Forerunner 45s. After messing with it for hours I gave up, went back to my local Fleet Feet and exchanged it for the Forerunner 35. I love Garmin watches, but they really missed the mark with the Forerunner 45. :(
