Absolutely in love!

I sew for a living and have to sew through layers of neoprene and heavy nylon that are sometimes 6.5mm thick. I often do French seems on this thick fabric (two layers of 2mm or 3mm neoprene + .5mm of nylon webbing) and then reinforce those seems with a zigzag over the top. I use this thing for 8 hours a day and have had no problems at all in the 6 months I've been using it. No jams, no sticking, no thread breaks, no stopping in the middle of what I am doing to take apart a machine and put it back together. My previous Brother as well as a vintage Singer could never quite power through making a simple cotton skirt without stopping to untangle thread somewhere in the machine. I could not be more pleased with my purchase! Some folks are mentioning that they are having trouble with their bobbin thread. I found that when I accidentally used a needle that was one size too small for my heavy thread, my bobbin thread would not pick up. A bent needle will do the same thing, so I advise switching the NEEDLE out and trying again. I have used this machine with large cones of thread and not even bothered to use a spool holder, but the machine dutifully picks up the thread from the cone without any complaints and still makes beautiful stitches. I've even used the wrong sort of bobbin in it, which I advise AGAINST doing, and it works just fine. It really can handle a lot of abuse. It is also small enough to be very portable, which is great for someone like me who moves around and travels a lot. Not what I would call "light weight", but light enough to be portable. It does not "travel" across the table while I am sewing, even on a cheap folding table. Not extremely quiet, but not too loud. Fairly easy to open up for oiling and cleaning. I love that parts of the casing are metal, so I can put my magnets on it - both as decoration and to hold sketches and notes about what I am working on. Easy to access accessories compartment is a major bonus for travel. Love love love love love

A wonderful machine (particularly at this price point)

I purchased this machine about 2 years ago. It has been wonderful! I find it easy to use and durable. I have used the machine for other things, but mostly I have done quilting. I am in the process of completing my 3rd quilt. The machine has a nice straight stitch - handles piecing well. When quilting, the machine seems to handle 3 layers (fabric/batting/fabric) with no problem or issue. I purchased a Singer walking foot. That foot works great for straight line quilting. I have tried some free motion quilting using a Singer darning foot. I am not an expert yet, but I'm making progress. I particularly like the following features: 1) Versatility of the machine. Lots of stitches including more than I need of decorative stitches. Easy controls for varying stitch width and length. Easy to vary upper tension. Easy to find different feet if/when I want them. Easy to change feet. Easy (but not too easy) to go in reverse. 2) Solid feel. The machine is heavy enough to stay in place when I sew. I like that it has at least some metal in the frame. 3) Needle threader. 4) Easily visible bobbin. I can see when I am about to run out of bobbin thread. 5) Built-in thread cutter. Not "automatic" but automatic is not important to me. It would be even better if the machine had the following features: 1) Longer arm length 2) Better lighting 3) Automatic needle down option 4) Speed control feature (for free motion quilting) I have seen some negative reviews on this machine. Some of the negative comments lead me to believe that the reviewers have little experience with sewing machines. For example: 1) it is CRUCIAL to properly thread a machine and bobbin. Machines act up (badly) when not properly threaded. 2) It is NOT WISE to try to sew over pins. REMOVE pins well before your needle gets to them. 3) When trying something new, first READ THE DIRECTIONS. Start stitching SLOWLY. If the machine jams, DON'T force it. Speed up only AFTER you know the machine is doing what you want.

You have to have the stitch width set to 0 for the needle placement, center, left or right. I wish the directions were clearer. I love this machine, nice even stitches. Easy to use.

I make quilt tops out of remnants for our church women's group who finish them and send them to Orphan Grain Train and Lutheran Church Missions worldwide. I also do mending on the machine. It is a delight to use.

Problems when new

Purchased new. The needle position dial will not move the needle position. It stays to the left. It will not center. Can not be used for zippers in this setting. I could not find anywhere else to ask about this. Anyone else have this problem? If I get this figured out I would give it 5 stars.

I read the reviews, most of the customer seemed happy with this sewing machine. Maybe I was unluck or they are amateurs. I bought this machine in August/2016. The reason I choose to buy this sewing machine was because me and my family has been working with singer sewing machines for all our lives. Since I left my country I used another brands of sewing machines but I was never satisfied. Then I decide to spent money with this heavy duty work horse sewing machine, trying to keep the tradition in my family with singers. I was confiant and secure that then I invesing t in a good merchandise. In the begin I found the tension a bit difficult to adjust . Bobbin thread was too lose. I tight the bobbin case and it felt a little better. Then when I needed to make a buttonhole it didn`t work at all. After I spent a very long time with tecnical support people finnally they agreed to take the machine for repair. 5 months later another problem. The machine completelly lost the tension: 1-TOP TENSION - always puling the bobbin thread up, didn`t matter if the lever was in zero or number nine. 2- BOBBIN TENSION - no tension at all in the bobbin, it was very very loose! Again they took the machine for repair. My luck it was still in the warranty. Ok, the tension was fix but still not that good but I could going on sew . The bobbin case is plastic and it seem very cheap plastic, it is not a heavy duty bobbin case. One thing that made me happy with this machine is the fact when I am sewing fast it doesn`t keep walking away from me.. But the reason I decided to write this review is because now after 14 months sincee I`ve bought this machine the BOBBIN tension has gone again. It doesn`t work at all. It cought me in the middle of a very important work. I am so fed up that I give up to use this machine I put it aside to be sold. I had to go to my daughter for whom I`ve given my old sewing machine to borrow it to be able to finish my work. The only problem is that it keeps walking away when I sew fast, But otherwise it is 13 years old and I just sent once for a service and replacemnet of the ilght bulb and threader needle. It is a Silver sewing machine and now I started to love it. I read some of the reviews with the same problems ftor the 4423 heavy duty singer!!!!! IT IS REALLY?????

I will never purchase another singer machine

After much research, I chose the 4423 because it's labeled a "workhorse" and "heavy duty." I am a stay at home mother with 3 children that I homeschool. I do not have time to see commercially or professionally, sewing is a hobby I love. This machine crushed my dreams. I've had it less than a year and a half, and have been experiencing issues with the stitch selector (a simple knob that chooses the random stitch of it's choice), and with tension. No matter what tension I choose, or stitch it chooses, I can sew normally around an item, then it makes a loud clanking noise and starts spoiling the thread under my fabric in large bird nests. I contacted customer service, who seemed easy to deal with at first, and assured me my machine was under the 2 year warranty. I emailed my receipt in, and several days later got a call that my switch selected knob is not included in the warranty because it is not electronic...wow, I bought a mechanical machine without electronics because I thought it would last longer. I was wrong. You see, this machine is only under warranty for 90 days unless it's the motor, foot pedal, or light assembly. So now I have a useless machine that's less than 2 and a half years old. Congratulations Singer for not standing behind your products, and for creating cheap machines that are only guaranteed for 90 days. Buyers beware...read you warranty fully and then determine if you wish to waste your money.

I have been sewing for the better part of 40 years. I purchased a basic Singer sewing machine back in 1985 and retired it just a few years ago. When I went to replace it I was given two different Singers, a Singer Traditional and a Heavy Duty 4423. I find both machines to be great for basic sewing. However, I think the Tradition works as well as the 4423, except for the limitations in sewing heavy fabrics. I have sewn heavy costumes for many years and my original machine took a beating but kept on performing. This new machine is the best machine I have used to date. The only issue I have had with either is with a particular brand of thread. However, the machines themselves are working great! I hesitated buying a new machine, but my daughter purchased the 4423 so I could sew her a wedding dress. I have never worked with a machine that is so easy to use while performing difficult stitches through multiple layers of heavy material . The first project I sewed was a dress form using light material. It performed as expected. But when I went to sew a mother dress form out of heavier material it was a joy to work with. My next project will use leather with heavy duck fabric. So far the samples have all been exceptional. Thanks Singer!
