This machine is great. I sew painted canvas' together and had tremendous difficulty until I bought this Heavy Duty. For a very reasonable price, I can now do professional stitching on art pieces from my small business. Get the 4452 which includes a walking foot. Only 2 wish list changes: 1. the length of cord on the foot pedal is too short 2. Increase the length of the machine body so there is more space to the right of the needle for fabric to move thru.

Good basic machine

I bought this machine a few weeks ago for my 17 year old daughter. She loves it! She learned to sew on my higher-end Husqvarna machine, but she finds the computerized options confusing, so is enjoying the simplicity of this machine. For her needs, this is a great machine. She enjoys the high speed of the basic stitches (though the more complicated stitches are much slower). The stitch length (3mm for most stitches, 4.5 for the basic ones) was too short for me, but appears to be sufficient for her needs. I hope she can use this for many years to come.

I learned to sew in my childhood in the 50's, on an old Singer treadle, that was my grandmother's. I have owned a couple of major brands. This Singer heavy duty 4452 is to replace a machine I've used for 30 yrs. (competitive brand) I was surprised to find no reference to maintenance, but there are videos on youtube. The machine sounded 'stiff' and noisy so I did have to oil it right out of the box. Much better after oiling. Oiling and cleaning is essential to keep any machine running. I feel there should be a written manual and service manual included. I'm not happy with the whole 'plastic' thing. I'm sure it brought the cost down greatly, but i believe the quality that Singer always has stood for, has been hurt by this. Time will tell as they say. Actual sewing seems adequate and runs much smoother since oiling. All in all OK. Would I recommend? Yes, but with some reservations.

The machine was purchase to replace a older model of same but to my dismay it is a cheaply made model, the older model prevails. This is what I get when you purchase online. Not happy with it.
