Why did I wait so long?

I owned a Singer Athena for 44 years. I don't sew more than maybe 4 times a year depending on need and time. Was making face masks for fellow nurses and health professionals when my dog foot broke. I thought it time to buy a new machine. What a difference so smooth, quite! Why did I wait. Now I'm learning to use different features. Can't wait to sew more!

I bought a Bernina during a slow work period in the early 1990's. Work increased to the point I really used it seldom. I had learned many years ago on a Singer so when I knew I would be affected by the "shelter in place" plan, I decided to get myself one and also I got one for a lifetime friend. This week I got the same machine for my sister for her birthday. So, I guess you can see I am a pleased customer that is making masks along with my friend and my sister. Stay healthy and keep sewing those masks.

I bought this machine to replace my 30 year old singer sewing machine which was a very basic model. I picked this machine because I wanted something heavy duty to do all the crazy jobs my husband wants done from patching his pants to sewing an ice shanty. This machine does have a much better motor that does easily sew through thicker fabrics and makes jobs like hemming jeans very easy. I am somewhat disappointed that I still can not sew really thick items because there just isn't enough space between the presser foot and the bottom plate to get the fabric under it. However, I suspect that most home machines would not be able to do this either. I was disappointed that the foot controller feels really cheap due to it being so light weight and I really miss the hard cover my old machine had for storing. I have had a chance to due a few sewing projects and really liked the even feed/walking foot which made sewing a quilt a breeze since the fabrics weren't sliding all over the place. I also just finished hemming a pair of knit slacks. The stiches for knit fabrics work really well. This is the first time that I've ever had much success sewing knits without the shape being distorted. All in all this is a good machine for the little money that I spent. I love that it is much easier to thread than my old machine.

This is the best sewing machine I've owned at home. I've used professional machines and this one comes close. It can do heavy duty jobs like jeans. Great machine!!
Pros: Can Withstand Use, Easy To Use, Versatile
I would recommend this to a friend!

Good for heavy-duty sewing but not for precise sewing. I still prefer my old Singer that I inherited from my mom for piecing quilts and making clothes.

I like this machine. It does see smoothly although the heavy duty performance is not any better than a normal machine. It needs coaxing through thick seams. Of all the machines I researched prior to purchase, this was about the only one without a extended table available for purchase. I had to make my own. I would also have liked the "needle down" capability..it would have made me more satisfied with this machine. Overall, I do like it. It feels more rugged and not cheap plastic.
