Damaged table and stove grill

Recently used our camp coffeemaker it melted a hole in our table and warped the grill on the stove.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I’ve had one of these for over 15 years. Finally replaced it. Expect new one to last at least that long. Love it. Makes coffee that tastes just like at home.

Careful with this maker

When new, it makes good coffee reliably. After a few uses (3-4) however, two things happen to the coffeemaker.
First, the metal (tin?) plate on the bottom that the flame contacts will melt, literally turn to liquid and pour molten tin onto the burner below. Since a replacement base plate is not available, we have separate plates made locally and replace them while still new to prevent this. The older ones did not do this. this is a serious issue if one was to "move" the coffee maker off the stove burner before it has finished dripping molten metal and re-solidified.
The second is the water check-valve located at the bottom of the tank at the inlet to the heater tube pops out. It can usually be pressed back in a few times, but this practice further loosens the grip it has on the ferrule it is installed in. If not checked after each use, it accidentally gets discarded. Our troop has three of these now without check valves (2 of the self-contained propane version). You may not get to this point however since the first issue is likely catastrophic, when considering young kids about. When, for either product, either a) the check valve no longer stays in, or b) has accidentally been discarded, it can continue to be used to make coffee. The trick is to keep the tank absolutely full. The water pressure from the weight of the water in the full tank forces the water through the tubes enough to make 1/2 coffee and 1/2 steam. It's better than nothing. There is no replacement part (check valve) available. We are looking into have some made locally.

Great concept, but took forever to brew, and melted and leaked everywhere. On a good note, made for lighter packing on the way home..
