Bringing the intensity up a few notches

At this point, it's safe to call Chevelle grizzled veterans of hard rock. They've been plugging away for over 15 years, cranking out reliably aggressive but still accessible rock that has its influences, but still sounds uniquely Chevelle. Now on their 8th album, we get some of the most noisiest and aggressive music we've heard from the band in some time: a direction hinted at on their last release, La Gargola, but fully implemented here. A band like this could phone it in for an excuse to tour at this stage in their career, but they are still offering surprises and showing they're definitely not ready to go out on the nostalgia circuit any time soon. Highly recommended if you like anything the band has done, particularly the first few albums.

Playing to their strengths

On their latest release, Egomaniac, South African band Kongos largely play to their strengths and build on what they've done previously. I found that the accordion plays more of a part in the foundation of these songs, and the vibe here is generally more uptempo, with less of the Coldplay-esque balladry of their previous release. The band has a very distinctive sound which is welcome in this day and age of formulaic music dominating the market, and is what you would hope for if you liked their earlier material. The band doesn't reinvent the wheel and it doesn't make a bid for spins on pop radio, but it does deliver what you would expect along with some maturity, a chemistry that can only come from a band of brothers, and enough surprises to keep you engaged.

Good release from beginning to end

The latest album from Deftones is a very good release from a band that knows who they are and continues to deliver the goods. If you're a fan and enjoy the work that they've put out, you shouldn't be disappointed. However, there are some who have critiqued the album for a number of reasons: the relative lack of screaming, a shortage of memorable songs, a lack of taking chances with their sound. Chances are, you're a fan of the old school 'Tones if you're in the first group, a fan of the newer releases (particularly Koi No Yokan, which notched several popular songs on rock radio) if you're in the second, or enjoy White Pony & Saturday Night Wrist the most if you are in the last group. It may take a few more listens for it to sink in, but Gore is a very good release even if it may not satisfy some of the fans of particular eras of the band. My hope is that they will continue to evolve, and that Stephen Carpenter (who has been as instrumental as anyone in giving the band their unique sound) will have a bit more of a creative role going forward on the next release. That said, this album is intense, interesting, and has many tracks that will likely become fan favorites even if this may not be their heaviest or most innovative or radio-friendly album. Recommended if you're a fan, though I would suggest White Pony or Around The Fur for those who are unfamiliar with the band first.

Solid album from a band that delivers the goods.

The fifth album by Cold War Kids is a good effort that finds the band largely sticking to their strengths. It doesn't break new ground, but it finds them refining what they have done up to this point, and it has led to them broadening their audience, largely due to the success of the single "First". It does seem as if some of the idiosyncrasies have been dialed back a bit on their later albums, which could have something to do with some personnel changes over the years. My hope is that eventually some of the quirkiness that made them unique will find it's way back into their sound. But Hold My Home is a strong effort if you enjoyed their last couple of albums, and shows a band that is hitting their stride five albums in.

Turn up the volume!

Welsh band Skindred has been doing their thing for a while. Their latest album, Volume, sees the band opting to stick to their strengths and refine what they're great at: their distinctive ragga/metal with electronic and hip-hop flourishes. The album won't change your mind about the band, but if you enjoy what they bring to the table, you can't miss with this one. It's an energetic listen and highly recommended for working out or driving, among other activities. I'd probably recommend their first release (Babylon) as the ideal starting point for Skindred, but this is every bit as good and you can see how they've honed their craft over the years. Good stuff!

This case was a worthwhile purchase, and the price was decent as well. It's sturdy without being clunky, eye catching without being tacky, and stylish without being over the top. I am pleased with my purchase, and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a reliable, durable case for their phone.

Decent debut that shows potential
on September 10, 2015

The debut release from Highly Suspect features a raw, bare-bones rock & roll sound that is somewhat reminiscent of acts like the White Stripes, Queens Of The Stone Age & Royal Blood. The band has a very solid sound and definitely has potential, but after several listens, aside from the powerful single "Lydia", many of the songs sound great but admittedly don't leave a heck of a lot of an impression. The band has shown that it has all the tools to succeed: a tight sound, a frontman with a strong presence and good vocals, and songwriting capability. I think they have what it takes to eventually take the world by storm and produce an album that will elevate their status substantially. For now, this is an enjoyable debut if you like the aforementioned bands and want something with a grittier sound than what is typically found on most of mainstream radio.

Excellent debut from a band with tons of potential

Wolf Alice is one of those bands that speaks to those of us who are disillusioned with the current state of music. Everything has become so synthesized, so polished that you wonder how much of the artist showed up in the final product. This band offers a unique sound in a musical climate filled with sound-alikes. Sure, there is influence from bands from the glory days of alternative rock (you can hear a little Nirvana, My Bloody Valentine, maybe some Sonic Youth), but it's a unique synthesis and makes for a surprisingly assured debut. The band has been honing their craft for several years, and the end result is a very solid effort that sets the bar high for future releases. Recommended if you enjoy the sound of '90s alternative rock, but from a band that still manages to have a sound all its own.

The silly side of Till Lindemann
on July 28, 2015
Posted by: forestlaw
Verified Purchase:Yes
This is the debut album from Lindemann, a project featuring Rammstein frontman Till Lindemann and Swedish musician Peter Tagtgren, perhaps best known for his work with Hypocrisy. Rammstein's last few albums showed the band straying ever so slightly from its intense industrial metal songs, showing a very oddball sense of humor on songs like "Amerika". But perhaps the single and video from their last album, "P---y", will best prepare the listener for what Lindemann has in store for their audience. This is not an album for the easily offended, as there are songs that put Lindemann's warped perspective on topics like abortion and transvestism front and center. Musically, the album doesn't stray far from the sound that is Rammstein's bread and butter, but on the whole, it is a very lighthearted (and often silly - in a good way) affair, which may rub some listeners the wrong way. My advice is to not go into this album with any expectations, and just enjoy it for what it is. Don't expect anything groundbreaking or thought-provoking, but do expect a rollicking, fun time with the album Skills In Pills.
