these are in my children bedrooms where space is at a minimum. I don't want to take a chance on one getting knocked off a desk or dresser so mounting it on a wall is best having the full motion and tilt is great as they can angle it to wherever they are in the room. Can this unit be useded outside in the heat or only indoors?
Yes. It works great outside I would recommend putting it in a shady spot as the outside of the unit does get very hot to touch in direct sunlight.

Can this be installed (built -in) under the counter in a kitchen? I noticed that it does not have the air flow grill in the front that the other built -ins do.
Yes it can but you will need to leave a little extra room in back so it can get air. We built it in an island grill outside works and looks great especially at night with the blue light.
