"Learning" Gems That Can Delight the Senses

HOW THEY WORK:
These are smart earbuds. You choose the Right or Left earbud as the Bluetooth receiver. The other earbud then pairs with the BT receiving earbud using radio frequency. The Bluetooth connection to the first earbud is solid. Unfortunately, an intermittent connection occurred during initial test between the Right & Left earbud, which I found to be frustrating. Thankfully, the earbuds "learned" the Right & Left wireless protocol after several hours & the intermittent disconnection reduced from the left earbud cutting out 7 times during "Stairway to Heaven", the first song I played, to only 1 disconnection during 5 songs. Based on 5+ hours of testing, the trend is improving & I expect even fewer disconnects over time.
LIKES:
1- Bluetooth Antenna is built in the earhook.
2- Sweat proof design.
3- "Earbuds Joined", "Pairing" & "Battery Condition" voice confirmation.
4- Beautiful packaging.
5- Battery Power built in the portable case allows recharging the earbuds 5 times = 30 Hrs & charge your cellphone, using the USB jack built into the case.
*HINT: When you close the Charging Case lid, be sure to snap the lid closed at the edge. (Push down at the edge and listen for a snap). Unless it snaps closed, you may not have an electrical connection between the 2) earbuds and the case charging contacts. (This happened to me 2ce before I learned this trick).
6- 5) LED's show condition of battery built in the case & flash when battery is charging.
7- Long battery life: 6 hours per charge, with 30 hours extra provided by the charging case battery.
8- 8) sets of gel-tips insure proper fit & make a HUGE improvement in sound quality, when you seal your ear canal!
9- Non-slip rubberized Charging Case is comfortable to handle.
10- The combination of non-slip rubberized earbuds & a well designed earhook keep these earbuds from ever getting loose or falling out of your ears. They feel 100% secure.
11- 8mm drivers produce very good quality sound.
*HINT: To achieve the very best audio, you must size the gels properly. At first, I has highly disappointed with the sound quality out of the box, using the stock gels. I tried the triple flange custom fit tips & settled on double flange gels that fit my ears perfectly - WOW!! Now the high frequencies went from muddy to crystal clear & the bass from non existent to good.
12- They play LOUD! Competitive Bluetooth Earbuds require my iPhone 6 Plus to play at full volume - and they are still not loud enough. These ear buds produce the same volume level (SPL) with the slider set at 80% on the iPhone.
13- Long range Bluetooth transmission! I was able to achieve the manufacturer's 30 foot range in my house, through walls.
14- Excellent acoustic environmental isolation.
15- Extremely comfortable, lightweight & no wires!
DISLIKES:
1- One earbud disconnects & becomes silent intermittently for a few seconds, then reconnects, as aforementioned.
2- Packaging: The earbuds are held very tightly by 4 plastic prongs in a beautiful, clear JLab Audio box. One of the clear plastic prongs in the presentation box broke as I removed the earbud. This does not affect performance of the earbud in any way; what broke is a small post in the packaging.
CONCLUSION:
JLab Audio - Epic Air True Wireless Earbud Headphones would be "Ideal", were it not for the occasional disconnection between Right & Left earbuds. Because these disconnections are becoming much less frequent & these truly wireless earbuds offer so many positives, they earn a 4 Star rating.
*HINT: These earbuds are "gems" after they have "learned" the connection protocol between Right & Left earbuds. Those who exercise patience during this learning process, will be rewarded by featherweight, wireless headphones that truly delight the senses!

Photoshop Elements 2018 & Premiere Elements 2018 raise the bar for photo & video editing software. Easy to install & very intuitive, Photoshop Elements brings your photos to life, allowing the most detailed editing with a common sense approach. Premiere Elements facilitates sophisticated video editing, whether captured by your cellphone, video camera, or shot on a digital still camera, and is very easy to use.
I used Adobe Photoshop & Lightroom previously for photo editing & Adobe Premiere Pro for video editing. Photoshop Elements brings the essential ingredients with some attractive automatic features from Photoshop, without the steep learning curve. The results are much faster, stress free, fun photo editing straight out of the box. Yet it features much greater customized photo editing capabilities than Lightroom.
The first attached photo shows a picture of a Zebra I captured & edited with Photoshop Elements right after installation without reading any instructions. The workflow just makes sense. It is so easy to use, photos can be edited in seconds.
The second attached photo shows the Preferences page from Premiere Elements. I posted this to show all of the available video parameter adjustments that are possible.
Both attached photos are displayed on a Sharp 4K monitor at 3,840 x 2,160 pixels (4K Ultra-HD). The requirements listed on product packaging include minimum 1280x800 display resolution. No mention is made as to maximum monitor resolution (various software require you to reduce resolution to match a specific resolution set by the software). Thankfully, this software works perfectly at 3,840 x 2,160 so no adjustments for proper display were necessary.
Two DVD's are included in the box: one for Windows and one for Mac. If you do not have a DVD drive, the address on the package allows downloading directly from the Adobe website.
This software is for one user. The license agreement specifically states: "You can install it on two computers, but you can only use one copy of the software at a time."
Photoshop Elements & Premiere Elements share a common Organizer that provides easy access to all photos & videos. Buying both as a bundle saves money & makes sense. No more searching for your media; Organizer keeps all photos & videos in one place & permits easy sharing to social media.
Some of the more amazing features of Photoshop Elements are:
1- Open closed eyes in photos (software copies / pastes open eyes from the same person taken in a different photo).
2- Replace backgrounds in seconds.
3- Add motion blur to create an action shot.
4- Locate photos by people, places or events.
5- Simple tutorials describe how to perform each of these & many other tasks.
CONCLUSION:
Adobe Photoshop Elements 2018 & Premiere Elements 2018 are in a class by themselves. They represent the most powerful, easy-to-use software for photo & video editing today & earn my Highest Recommendation!

Ultimate Ears - MEGABLAST is a stunning portable speaker with Alexa built-in. I own several Voice-Controlled Personal Assistants, so I am very familiar with Alexa's capabilities & will compare UE MEGABLAST accordingly.
LIKES:
1- Bass output is second to no other device with Alexa onboard. Nothing is even close. Put your hand near the side when it is rocking & feel the air from the woofers & passive radiators! Bass sounds like a quality 8" woofer!
2- High frequencies are crystal clear, noticeably more musical than the average Voice-Controlled Personal Assistant, which is an impressive accomplishment.
3- Waterproof to 1 meter for 30 minutes.
4- Long lasting built-in rechargeable Li-ion battery rocks out up to 16 hours between charges!
5- Built-in equalization emulates "Loudness On". Bass is always leading & high frequencies are above the midrange. The equalization has been finely tuned & is not adjustable.
6- Bluetooth Input permits sound from any Bluetooth source. This is exceptionally handy in areas with no Wi-Fi.
7- Very rugged case is perfect for portable use.
8- Syncs with other Alexa equipped devices; they all answer questions, play the news, announce sports, weather, route time to work & other traditional Alexa functions.
9- Automatic updates arrive via Wi-Fi to improve performance over time.
10- Uses the tried-and-true Alexa app.
11- Voice command most smart home devices.
12- 360 degree sound is much more obvious than in the average Voice-Controlled Personal Assistant, due to the multiple premium quality tweeters & the sound has a spread matrix stereo effect. It really sounds like there are 2 speakers in the room. In addition to the more forward bass & articulate highs, this spread stereo sound is stunning.
13- The charging base (optional & sold separately) makes charging as simple as sitting the speaker on a round disk. Highly recommended!
14- Auto off after a period of time when the music has stopped to save the battery. Or with the Charging Base, it converts to always on, always listening for "Alexa" command.
15- Plays extremely loud! 93dB rated output!
16- No audible distortion in the bass, even at high SPL's!

CONCERNS:
1- "Alexa Lite" best describes the reduced capability of the personal assistant. Having numerous Voice-Controlled Personal Assistant devices already, the differences jumped out: No Sirius XM, Spotify or Pandora Streaming; no "Amazon" wake-up name option (only Alexa); no voice confirmation when you call out "Alexa", though the light on top indicates Alexa has been queried, if you happen to look in that direction.
2- Equalization (bass / midrange / treble balance) is not user adjustable, though it comes factory set to produce amazing sound.
3- No 3.5mm audio input jack to hardwire sound from an external device to maintain clear audio. Bluetooth is a limited fidelity transmission, and this speaker is so good, that really shows. Streaming sound from Prime Music, for example, sounds stunning; streaming from your phone or tablet by Bluetooth lacks the dynamic range, bass punch & high frequency clarity and sounds just "O.K."
4- Pairing 2) MEGABLAST speakers for Right / Left stereo sound is not possible as of this test. However, this feature may appear via a future automatic Software update.
CONCLUSION:
If you are an audiophile, BUY MEGABLAST!! You will not believe your ears if you stream music from Amazon Prime or other high quality streaming sources. Avoid Bluetooth for audio purity reasons. Sound quality vs. cost make this device an absolute STEAL for audiophiles!!
However, if you prioritize the maximum capability of the Voice-Controlled Personal Assistant over sound quality, then other, less costly devices may better meet your expectations.
MEGABLAST far exceeded my expectations & earned my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!!

Honeywell Precision + Easy Installation = $$ Saved

Honeywell has built a stellar reputation for Energy Management, Security & Precision Temperature Control in Commercial Buildings & Homes. With the popularity of "Smart" Thermostats, many previously unheard of brands appeared. Unfortunately, independent testing found some of the most popular "Smart" Thermostats actually maintain 3 degree F accuracy! Model # RTH9585WF is a Generation 2 Honeywell Smart Thermostat, and like Gen 1, it is rated to maintain 1 degree F accuracy.
Installation is as simple as following a video, or reading a PDF. If you can place colored wires under a screw, you can master this installation with ease! There is even a toll free help line.
This thermostat features very large numbers that can be read across the room. Outside Temperature (sourced via the Internet using your Zip Code), Set Point & Actual Room Temperature are Boldly displayed.
The background color behind the numerals is easily adjustable & can be set to match a theme / season / wall color / favorite team.
The free App on iOS & Android is very easy to activate. Once the quick registration process is complete, you can monitor & change temperature anywhere in the world!
Amazon Echo products & Google Home both work great with this Honeywell, and do not require an intermediary hub. This thermostat is designed for voice control from both "Alexa" & "OK Google"!
One improvement I could recommend for a future Generation of this Honeywell would be the ability to purchase & connect Wireless Remote Sensors for temperature control of other rooms throughout the house.
Another would be to integrate humidity control wirelessly. The run time on Central A/C has a dramatic effect on humidity, in addition to temperature. I owned the Honeywell "Perfect Climate Comfort Center Control System" with both of these features via hardwired sensors. They worked GREAT, but I wanted a Smart Wi-Fi Thermostat, so I naturally stayed with Honeywell.
Measuring 0.75 x 4.5 x 3.5 in, this is a slim, bright, good looking precision instrument that earned my Highest Recommendation!

The Acer S271HL GBIDX 27" Monitor is a modern, borderless color monitor. It is budget priced & offers value for the money.
LIKES:
1- Lightweight, small profile makes it easy to locate in tight places.
2- Blue light on Power Button can be easily switched On / Off by one of the first Menu settings. See blue light ON in attached photos.
3- Very bright LED backlit screen rated at 300 cd/m². Factory set to "Brightness: 100%". Back this down & the contrast improves / colors are less washed out.
4- DVI, VGA, HDMI Inputs.
5- Anti-Glare matte Screen.
6- Energy Star Certified.
7- Anti-slip base stays put on the desk.
8- The borderless screen: "Zero Frame", as Acer calls it, looks great & very modern.
9- Three Year Parts & Labor Warranty.
DISLIKES:
1- Extremely tight swivel mechanism. A very hard push is required to tilt the screen - it feels like the screen will break before it tilts because the plastic frame flexes, despite not swiveling as designed.
2- Power supply is external, so you have to deal with a power brick & a cord that plugs in to this monitor.
3- No speakers in this monitor.
4- Motion blur is seen watching a movie from Amazon Fire TV through the HDMI port. This will not affect monitor performance, but I would not recommend it for gamers or for watching video through HDMI.
5- No Webcam onboard.
6- No height adjustment.
7- Colors are muted; not vibrant, even after calibration. See attached photos of a highly detailed photo I captured; one with & one without onboard settings.
8- HDMI Cable is not included; however a VGA cable is included.
9- No remote for monitor adjustments. Onboard settings, accessible by hidden buttons below the monitor, just to the left of the power button. are shown in attached photo.
10- Limited to 1920 x 1080 Resolution.
CONCLUSION:
This 27" monitor will serve even the brightest office environment well, where the objective is to read documents, email & text.
However, due to the referenced limitations, it is not recommended for gaming, movies or photo editing.

Update Your Garage Door to App Control

This Smart Garage Hub is easy to install in about 15 minutes. I love knowing when my garage door is opening or closing. You can even let a neighbor or a friend in remotely. It is extremely handy. I receive alerts on my mobile phone when the garage opens or closes.
But, hidden in the details is the subscription you will need to accomplish all but the most basic functions. Fees apply after thirty days for IFTTT and Google Home control. Read the product description. Google and other companies provide their service for free for all smart devices, so charging for this interface should be eliminated, in my opinion. Access to both will run you $20/yr on top of the $100 for the device itself.
This hub is compatible with most brands of garage door openers made after 1993.
Nice package size: 1.5" x 4.5" x 4.5".
Includes Wi-Fi Hub Power Supply, Bracket for Hub, Door Sensor, Hardware, User's Guide & Warning Decal.
CONCLUSION:
The myQ Smart Garage Hub MYQ-G0301 is a convenient device to retrofit most garage doors for remote monitoring & control. I would choose a different device if you intend to use IFTTT and Google Home control because of the fees. For basic monitoring & control, MYQ-G0301 will satisfy most users.

The Sony GTK-XB90 is the most powerful, best sounding Bluetooth "Party Speaker" that Sony has released to date. That is no small feat, as Sony created this market & introduces progressively more upscale & bold models. This BEAST is the KINGDADDY of "Party Speakers"!
Weighing in at 31 lb & standing a full 26.4" H, 13.2" D & 13.2" W, this speaker makes a powerful statement just by showing up. Fire it up - WOW!
LIKES:
1- Fully customizable dazzling lights create a festive atmosphere; you set woofer & surrounding ring colors, as well as the strobe lights wirelessly with a free app. The high-spirited lighting drew more accolades than the musicality of the speaker! At one point, I sat this speaker in the family room during a family reunion with quiet conversation, and turned the music off. Ever changing hues augmented the spirit of good-fellowship in this intimate setting.
2- A microphone jack with variable input level on the back of the speaker blend with direct plug-in or Bluetooth audio to facilitate a perfect Karaoke setup.
3- The Bluetooth range is the most extensive of any speaker I have tested. I set the iPad 30 feet away and it played continuously without any dropouts.
One touch NFC Pairing makes Bluetooth connection a breeze for phones so equipped.
4- Audio Equalization, Flanger, Isolator, Wah, and other features are wirelessly customizable via the free App.
5- Extra Bass is a simple, one touch setting on the control panel. It has a similar effect of "Loudness" equalization. I leave it on all of the time.
6- The built-in rechargeable Li-ion battery makes it a killer Tailgating Machine. It can last up to 16 hours with modest volume & no lighting, or 3 hours at full volume, Extra Bass & lighting.
7- The Carry Handle makes this "Party-In-A-Box" easy to transport.
8- I intend to buy a second GTK-XB90 (you can Party Chain up to 10) to spread the sound & lighting. The music & lighting are automatically synchronized!
9- Who else but Sony would include DSEE on a Party Speaker - a cool feature that enhances the quality of compressed digital music files. The Digital Sound Enhancement Engine is very effective & adds clarity to high frequencies.
10- This is the only Bluetooth Speaker I have ever tested with BOTH Audio Input & Output connections. Amazon Fire TV connected to a projector via HDMI, then audio fed to this speaker using R+L RCA jacks change a "tin horn" 3" projector speaker to a room-filling overture. Still not enough bass? Add a subwoofer to the output jacks! BOOM!!
11- Up to 3 smartphones can connect to this speaker simultaneously via Bluetooth, allowing 3) music libraries to share tracks.
12- With 2) 7.09" Woofers & 3) 2.36" Tweeters, the GTK-XB90 plays horizontally or vertically in full stereo. Or add additionally speakers as aforementioned & spread the stereo effect.
DISLIKES:
1- I would prefer even more bass at lower overall volume levels. This can be accomplished today by plugging in an external subwoofer to the output jacks.
CONCLUSION:

Backing up your iPhone without using the cloud is the target objective of the SanDisk - iXpand Base. The other benefit is to charge the phone. Several storage options exist: 64GB; 128GB & 256GB; select the memory appropriate to the photos & videos you keep on your phone.
LIKES:
1- iXpand is a quality built, premium product. The black & silver blend into any office or home.
2- Wire management groove maintains a neat, professional appearance.
3- Modest Cost. It is important to note that the cost includes a premium quality high speed SanDisk SD Memory Card.
4- The charging base charges your iPhone at the same time it backs up the phone. This is convenience at it's best!
5- Back-up speed is amazingly fast! I backed up over 600 photos in 5 minutes.
6- Future Proof: You can back-up multiple iPhones on this one device. Should you run out of storage, simply buy an additional SD Card.
7- Uses Standard Micro USB connector & includes power supply.
8- Interchangeable memory / easy to plug into a computer for storage.
DISLIKES:
1- No Wireless charging for iPhone 8.
2- The USB Plug fit very tight. Hint: I had difficulty plugging the USB plug that connects to the Lightning connector. Gently tilt the USB Plug up and down as you plug it in.
3- Only works with the iXpand app.
4- Can only store videos, photos & contacts.
5- Lightning to USB Cable is not included. Since it is difficult to plug in & is a tight fit, you want to plug the cable in 1 time and forget it. You may wish to buy a spare cable to use this device.
6- Only works on iPhones.
CONCLUSION: iXpand is a great tool to back up multiple iPhones without internet / when the Cloud is undesired or is simply not available. It is a very well designed product; however it is missing a few details listed above, which preclude it from earning 5 Stars.

How do you charge the cameras?
An included magnetic cord with USB is used to charge the battery. Simply place it on the bottom of the Ultra Camera & it sticks & electrically connects to the camera. You have the option of keeping power on the battery during use, if a wall outlet is handy.

I have an Eero wireless router with 3 satellite ports. It works well in my 2 story home. Do the cameras need to be 50 to 100 ft from the base or from the Eero satellite port?
The cameras must directly interact with the Base. The "Smart" features are actually in the Base. I am finding much greater distance than the quoted distance of the Ultra camera rom the Base. The base plugs into the router via Ethernet, so the Wireless Router distance to the camera does not matter.

How long do batteries last on the cameras
The answer totally depends on the amount of motion the camera sees. In a quiet environment, I saw nearly 2 months of battery life. In a high motion environment, I had to charge it about once / week. By motion, I mean a dog or a person alerting the camera to motion.

However, you cannot pair the new Ultra Camera with the old base you used with your Arlo Pro 2 Cameras. You will no longer need or would want to use that old base. This new one is far superior.

The rebate would be through your utility company. I would recommend calling your local utility company in Cape Cod & ask them to send you the rebate form.

Why it is not able to connect to my laptop? It works well with the iphone.
The headphones may be automatically connecting to your iPhone, retaining that connection, and if so, cannot connect to your laptop if it is nearby, as Bluetooth can connect to only one source at a time.
Power your iPhone off as a test, or, if you prefer, simply swipe up the screen from the bottom & select Bluetooth OFF.
Then go to settings on your laptop - Bluetooth - make visible. Press & hold the headphone power button on. Look for the headphones on your laptop Bluetooth list. It should be there now. Click on the WH-CH700N.
Power your iPhone back on, or restore Bluetooth, which you previously turned off.
Power your iPhone off as a test, or, if you prefer, simply swipe up the screen from the bottom & select Bluetooth OFF.

Can you activate Google Assistant with the mic like you can Siri? I didn't see it listed as a feature.

If you can activate Google Assistant by pressing the Home Button & speaking into the phone, then you can activate Google Assistant with the WH-CH700N.
However, if you press the Home Button & it only brings up Siri, that is the same result to expect from WH-CH700N.
