If Snoop Dogg's debut, Doggystyle, doesn't seem like a debut, it's because in many ways it's not. Snoop had already debuted as a featured rapper on Dr. Dre's 1992 album, The Chronic, rapping on half of the 16 tracks, including all the hit singles, so it wasn't like he was an unknown force when Doggystyle was released in late 1993
UGK, which consisted of rappers Pimp C and Bun B, were a Southern rap duo known for popularizing the brand of Southern rap that dominates mainstream rap today. After Pimp C's death in 2007, a final UGK album, UGK 4 Life, was released before Bun B focused on his solo career.
UGK should be remembered for how legitimate they were able to remain during their fifteen year history. From "Too Hard to Swallow" to "Underground Kingz," the Houston, Texas, duo has managed to exist through a variety of rap trends all while sounding as if they belonged in each. "UGK 4 Life," the group's final record, finds living member Bun B sifting through previous UGK sounds to make one lasting impression about what the group represents
A clear theme on "UGK 4 Life" is one of celebration. Openers ‘Still on the Grind’ and ‘Everybody Wanna Ball’ show UGK loving their recent popularity and are as great as any other UGK classic. 'Steal Your Mind,' featuring Snoop Dogg and Too Short, exists past being simply a collaboration track. Pimp C’s love of programmed drums carries this track, its production sounding rhythmically similar to those of El-P and Def Jux. Smoother tracks like 'The Pimp and the Bun' and 'Swishas and Erb' escape R&B clichés and feature extremely aggressive verses from both Bun B and Pimp C.
Rawer, harder, funkier, bouncier, and probably a better album overall than Ridin' Dirty. Bun B improves considerably from Too Hard to Swallow, but Pimp C remains the bigger mic presence which is refreshing given how inundated rap is with Bun B features at this point. The evolution of Pimp C's production was incredibly rapid, moving in one album from adequate to the best in the south, irresistibly funky with the best sense for catchy melodies of any producer ever. It's similar to Southerplaylisticadillacmuzik, a true southern classic that has unfortunately been buried by the group's later work.
Too Hard to Swallow, one of the more overlooked hip hop albums of the 90s, kickstarted the career of one of the best hip hop duos of all time. UGK (short for Underground Kingz), made up of Pimp C and Bun B, were clearly an extremely talented group, that had the capability of putting the south on the map. UGK were by far one of the best southern hip hop acts at the time, and could even hold their own against a lot of east coast artists. Although for some UGK's southern style may be an acquired taste, once you fully appreciate the level of talent you're dealing with, you can understand why they get as much acclaim as they do, and why to an extent they're underrated.

For the first time in his career, Kem will lay all of his cards on the table and grant fans the opportunity to get up close and personal while delivering a 10-song collection of timeless music for the grown and sexy. Intimacy features vocal and production collaborations with the likes of Grammy-winning Soul diva Jill Scott and the late Motown legend David J. Van dePitt, who famously produced Marvin Gaye's 1971 masterpiece, What's Going On.
India Arie's Acoustic Soul is just as advertised: grooving soul music with an acoustic bent. Arie herself plays guitar, supplemented by strings (instead of synthesizers) and drums (instead of drum machines). The first single, "Video," is a calm, confident ode to self-love, comparing the dreadlocked, petite Arie to the average girl in a video. Arie is indeed anything but average: her debut marks the auspicious return of the black female singer-songwriter, in the vein of Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Tracy Chapman, and Dionne Farris. If you like their music, with thoughtful lyrics and layers of instrumentation, you'll love this album.
