My wife needed a printer for school, and this one fits the bill.
It is a bit loud when printing, but you can still carry on a conversation.
To set up the direct print was a little daunting, but the online help was available. If you have done it before it is easy.

We use the HP 61XL inkjet. When I print out photos on glossy paper the black continues to be smudgy after days of drying. What is the problem?
You can't get ink jet prints wet like C-41 prints. However, a higher quality paper can offer some protection from smudging from simple touching.
This printer is a basic printer and not one made for photo quality prints.
A basic printer may not use what are called archival inks like a photo quality printer will use.
You may need a better printer if you want to continue printing photos yourself.

Can this printer scan slides?
My last scanner came with an attachment for scanning slides. Does HP make an attachment for the 2540 for slide scanning?
No, it does not have a slide attachment. I can handle pictures, but not negatives and slides.
