Great 1st Electric Toothbrush for your Little One
on April 16, 2024
Posted by: JoeBlow25
Electric toothbrushes in general are great for a number of reasons, they ensure that you brush your teeth for a long enough period of time and brush your entire mouth thoroughly as well. With little ones, both of these things are difficult without constant monitoring, so having an electric brush sized for their hand and mouth to help them develop these good brushing habits is great!
Setup is easy, runs off a AAA battery. The claim is that this will last 90 days - if true, that is a great battery life!
Like adult electric brushes, this has a 2 minute timer with a 30 second pause to signal your little one to switch quadrants.
The stand is fine, but I may just end up throwing the brush in a drawer instead of leaving it on the counter - one less thing to clean. The brush body is textured to help with grip as well.
The pricing is also quite affordable and the brush heads don't seem to be overly expensive to replace either. It is recommended to change the brush head every 3 months.
Overall a simple and great product to help kids develop good brushing habits and keep their 1st set of teeth nice and clean!

Awesome sound with great bass
on February 3, 2024
Posted by: JoeBlow25
While I own other Bluetooth speakers, this is the first party speaker I have ever owned. I think the main difference is the size, max volume, and the lighting effects. And this speaker delivers on all three.
It is big and heavy which is good for a party speaker that will be on the floor where the party is happening. I am still able to comfortably carry it with one hand using the handle, so moving it isn't an issue.
The max volume is loud - but there is still very little distortion when the volume gets high. I plan on using this outdoor mainly so the loud volume will be great to fill a big open space like that. The IPX4 water resistance rating will make sure that it'll survive close proximity to the pool which is great peace of mind too!
The lighting effects are quite good with a lot of options built into the app/speaker for whatever mood you're going for - from rave to chill to no lighting at all. Since I will be using this mostly outdoors in the daytime, the light effects aren't as important to me, but when the parties go into the evening, I'm sure they'll be nice to have.
The rated battery life of 25 hours is also quite good - more than enough to make it through any party, The speaker also has a battery care feature that will only charge the battery to 90% to help maintain the long term battery capacity.
Overall sound quality is very good, even at high volumes and built in Mega Bass effect is not overpowering, but just right. I haven
To sum it up, this is a great party speaker with great features even if you don't need the kareoke options.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Real smoked flavor indoors!
on December 30, 2023
Posted by: JoeBlow25
While I am not new to smoking, this is the first smoker I have ever used. I previously smoked using my propane BBQ which requires constant attention to make sure the temperature stays where you want it to be. I have seen other smokers though and am familiar with how they work.
The main drawback of the GE indoor smoker is the small size compared to outdoor smokers. That being said, being a unit that can be used indoors gives it so many advantages over other smokers, especially in northern climates like where I live. Now I can smoke year round, rain or shine, even if it's freezing outside! In my opinion, this more than makes up for the limited capacity.
I've made 2 things with this smoker so far, here is my experience:
1. A recipe from the recipe book that comes with the unit for S'mores. This was a disaster, it almost seems like no one actually tried this recipe before publishing it. First, it says to use a temperature of 140 F - the unit does not allow you to go this low, the lowest temp is 170 F, so this is what I started with. The estimated time for the marshmallows to slightly brown is given as 6-8 minutes in the recipe - it ended up actually taking almost an hour and I raised the temp to 240 F after about 15 minutes. The marshmallows did finally brown slightly, but after so long in the smoker, both marshmallows and chocolate had been completely dried out. So instead of gooey, melty s'mores, we had some hard crunchy things that tasted like cardboard. If I were to try this again, I would use the max temperature (300F) and hope the marshmallows browned and got gooey instead of drying out. I am only knocking off 1 star for this because I'm mainly concerned about how this unit performs with meat which is what we'll talk about next.
2. Pork Back ribs. Here I used the rub recipe from the included recipe book, but I did a 3-2-0.5 smoke on them - that is 3 hours level 5 smoking unwrapped at 225F, then 2 hours just cooking (no smoke) wrapped in foil with some butter and brown sugar added, and then 1/2 hour cooking unwrapped after brushing my favorite BBQ sauce just to caramelize. These ribs were just awesome! Great bark, just shy of fall of the bone tender, nice smoky flavor, all the fat was rendered nicely, better than most ribs I've had in any restaurant - couldn't be happier with the result!
Some other notes, GE claims 3 full racks of ribs can fit in this unit - this is probably only true if your rack are on the small side. 2 racks would comfortably fit however.
Smart HQ app is nice to use and seems to provide full control over the unit remotely, so you can control your cook even if you're not at home.
One other big advantage of this unit is that pellet usage is quite low compared to conventional smokers, so far I have done about 4 hours of smoking and still haven't completely used the 1 lb pellet bag that came with the unit.
Clean up is also pretty easy, the internal racks are dishwasher safe and the inside can be wiped down with warm soapy water for cleanup. The water from pellet waste bin can be strained, and the bin it self just needs a rinse after emptying.
Overall, I think I will be using this unit a fair bit and I am very happy with the performance. It is a bit pricey, but being able to smoke whenever you feel like it, makes it worth it!

The ECOVACS DEEBOT X2 OMNI is a giant leap forward for robot vacuums. Its slimmer square-shaped design offers better edge cleaning, cornering, and maneuvering under low clearance areas and around obstacles. Add in automatic mop lifting and enhanced learning capability, and you’ll quickly discover why it’s able to go where no robot vacuum has gone before.

Great Robot Vacuum, surprisingly smart
on November 20, 2023
Posted by: JoeBlow25
The last robot vacuum I owned was about 20 years old, they have definitely come a long way since then.
Out of the box, initial setup is easy using the app. After the vacuum found the base station, I let it charge fully before doing anything else. Once charged, I initiated mapping which was relatively quick for my ~2000 sq ft main floor (about 15 minutes or so). After mapping, I edited the map in the app dividing some rooms and renaming others. One limitation I encountered was that I was not able to divide my kitchen and dining area into 2 rooms (it is an open concept layout) no matter what I tried. Also, custom room names do not seem to be available either.
After this, I selected the kitchen/dining area in the app and directed the robot to mop and vacuum the room. The kitchen was especially dirty as we had been baking for most of the previous day so it was a good performance test. Suction and water flow were a default values (standard and medium).
Even though this is a square robot design, the side brush still does the heavy lifting in terms of cleaning the corners and edges of a room sweeping dirt away from the edges allowing the robot to suck it up. However, some of the crumbs/dirt end up being swept into an area that has already been covered so they are not sucked up. Fortunately, this is the case for only a very small amount of the dirt and the side brush is overall very effective at cleaning edges and corners. The few remaining crumbs were picked up by running the vacuum one more time over the room with no mopping. Since the kitchen floor was much dirtier than it normally would be, having to do this extra pass to pick up the last few crumbs was not completely unexpected.
Mopping is also very good, there was one spot on the kitchen floor where something very sticky had fallen and this was the only spot that the mop was not able to clean effectively. But, to be fair, cleaning this spot manually did take some elbow grease and finger nail scrubbing, so I wouldn't expect any robot floor cleaner to get this in 1 pass.
When running, the robot seems to always do the perimeter or the area being cleaned first. So it seems if you are home while it is running, it seems more practical to clean a room/rooms that you don't plan on being in for the cleaning period and leave full cleaning to when you are away.
The robot seems to avoid narrow and thicker cables well and cleans under our couches even though it has minimal clearance. When cleaning around tables and chairs it does a good job of getting everywhere that it can (between chair and table legs) so moving everything to clear the floor isn't always necessary for routine upkeep.
Onto the station. The convenience of having the station not only charge the robot but also:
-Clean and dry the mop pads
-Wet the mop pads with hot water before mopping
-Empty the dust bin into a vacuum bag
Can not be overstated. According to the app, the robot itself only needs some simple maintenance every 30 hours of run time - which may be months in terms of cleaning time.
Overall, very happy with this, it will be our primary floor cleaner going forward!

A Surge Protector with some style
on November 18, 2023
Posted by: JoeBlow25
This is a nice surge protector with good connection options that include:
-6 protected outlets that are facing outward so there is less chance of larger power bricks blocking adjacent outlets. 2 outlets near the power switch have extra space around them as well for larger power bricks.
-Standard USB and a USB-C connections - these days it's nice to have both of these.
Aesthetically, this power strip actually looks fairly premium. A nice 6ft braided cable, the housing a brushed metal accents on the top and bottom that do actually look like metal. The Rocketfish logo is actually the on/off switch for the unit as well.
A very nice feature is that the outlets illuminate with a tap of the "LIGHT" button. This is very nice if you are trying to plug in cables in a dark confined space.
Some the of tech features worth highlighting:
-20W USB-C - not the fastest, but not the slowest either, 12W USB is also decent.
-2880 joules of surge protection is good for protecting expensive equipment like home theatre, PCs, consoles, etc...
Overall a great power strip that look nice and will also protect your equipment and is backed by a limited connected equipment warranty as well.

Bird Feeder with a camera ... well duh!?
on November 7, 2023
Posted by: JoeBlow25
Seems like a product that is long overdue. As someone who enjoys watching birds at their feeder, a bird feeder with an internet connected camera seems like something that I should have already had!
Setup is easy with the app guiding you every step of the way. The product is fully assembled out of the box except for the camera. After connected the camera to wifi, the rest of the setup takes a bit of time due to a lengthy firmware update (~20 min) plus a few hours to fully charge the battery. Once that is done, you simply place the camera in the feeder (a magnet makes this a no fail process) and connect the cable for the solar panel.
Once the camera is in place, take the feeder outside and place it somewhere with a good wifi signal, fill it with seed using the included scoop, and you are good to go.
So far I haven't had any feathered visitors, mostly due to the time of year. But I have done live stream tests on the camera and they have worked fine.
Knocking 1 star off due to 1080p video being locked behind a paywall ($3/month) called bird buddy pro. The other features in bird buddy pro aren't that critical, but in this day and age 1080p video shouldn't be considered a premium feature, it should be available for free.
Overall a great product, look forward to seeing all the visitors that come during the spring/summer months!

Nice cable, good price
on October 12, 2023
Posted by: JoeBlow25
This is a well made USB cable that you don't need to spend a lot of money on.
Charging: while it doesn't support 100W charging, 60W is plenty fast for mobile devices and this cable will work with your fast/turbo chargers for phones or tablets, it just might not be able to handle beefy laptop chargers that need 100W.
Speed: 480 Mbps is again not the fastest that USB C can support right now, but this is still very fast and will handle most of your transfer/sync needs without huge delays.
Construction: The braided jacket feels like it will last, on the box it states 15,000 bends. The connectors also feel solid and do not feel like they will break. 4 Ft length is perfect for the desk top, car, charging station and many other situations.
Being a standard USB-C cable, this is compatible with many mobile devices and laptops these days and Apple sounds like it will even be switching to USB-C for iPhones and other products soon. So good, durable USB-C cables will always have a use for everyone. Can't go wrong here!

Never knew I needed these!
on October 10, 2023
Posted by: JoeBlow25
I never even knew electric scissors existed until I got this product and now that I've been using them for a few days, I can't believe how easy it makes many cutting chores.
The main use case most will find is to break down cardboard boxes, it handles these with ease, but it also works on fabric and plastic too, especially that annoying plastic packaging used for many products.
Other design highlights that make this a pleasure to use are a relatively fast recharge time of 5 hours for months of operation. Also not having to replace batteries is nice.
The blade is self-sharpening, so should last a good long while. A safety switch ensures that you won't accidentally cut yourself.
The scissors are light and comfortable to hold so you can cut for a long time if you need too without hand or wrist fatigue.
Cuts are very clean as well, so would work well for paper/fabric projects, maybe even gift wrapping.
Overall, a very useful and versatile product that does well in the garage, for crafting, etc...

Great Smart Lock that is easy to install
on October 10, 2023
Posted by: JoeBlow25
This is my second Yale Smart lock, but my first with a finger print scanner.
Installation is easy as long as you have standard deadbolt cutouts in your door (most people will). Simply remove your old deadbolt (typically a couple of screws) and install the Yale one following the instructions. The lock includes a door open sensor that can be optionally installed, a neat idea for those who worry if they actually closed the door or not. I did not install this as I have door open sensor as part of my alarm system.
Setup is also relatively easy using the app with the option to also use WiFi to allow remote access at the cost of battery life (AA batteries included). I'll see how battery life is with WiFi enabled and may revert to bluetooth only if it becomes a pain to replace batteries often. It is still very functional with bluetooth only as fingerprint scan, etc... work just fine. The fingerprint scanning did take some time and fiddling to finally get working, not sure exactly what got it to start working eventually, but it is working well now.
I use Alexa and Google home devices, the lock works well in both eco systems.
Overall another great Yale Lock, except for some fingerprint setup issues which seem to have resolved on their own, no issues at all so far.

Amazing Mouse for Serious Gamers
on September 8, 2023
Posted by: JoeBlow25
This is probably the best gaming mouse you can buy and it all comes down to a bunch of little things that work so well together.
First the shape of the mouse is simple, but works with almost every grip type. It has an slightly textured finish that ensures a good grip and the bottom has PTFE feet as well as the power switch and storage for the USB dongle. Over all weight is good at 60g. USB-C port for charging on the front of the mouse, sort of the expected standard these days. Spec'd battery life is 95 hours.
The mouse wheel and buttons all feel great with the right amount of tactile response. Side buttons are in the perfect position to be useful but not in the way.
The mouse's main upgrade over its predecessor is the Hero 2 sensor. Combined with the G-Hub software from Logitech there is a whole host of customizations available including DPI on a per axis basis, even lift-off distance can be set over many different profiles for different types of games you might play - MMORPG, RTS, Third person, etc...
In summary, you really can't go wrong with this mouse, it is probably the best gaming mouse available right now.

Hi, I just read that these headphones should be charged thru a booted computer. Does that mean I can’t use a wall charger for this? I’m a frequent traveler and I don’t always a laptop or pc around. Can I not just plug it in thru a wall adapter?

Can these headphones work as noise cancelling without having to be connected to the phone (like the Bose)?

Yes, noise cancelling turns on whether or not Bluetooth is connected. It turns on by default when you power on the headphones and there is a button to toggle it on/off.

Let’s say the battery dies and I connect with a wire. Will noise cancelling work? I know Bose QC35 will provide a sound but no noise cancelling on that case. What about Sony?

Noise cancelling requires power, so I would imaging the noise cancelling turns of as well.

Does the quick attention mode turn on when you rest your head against the the side of the airplane or headrest ? If so, can this feature be turned off ?

No, it seems to need your hand (or something conductive - similar to a touch screen).
