Cujoe's Reviews

Hawk the Slayer will appeal most to undiscriminating fans of the sword-and-sorcery genre. The title character, played by John Terry, is on a lifelong quest for "The Power", an enchanted flying sword. Alas, Hawk's evil brother Voltan (Jack Palance) likewise covets The Power. A plethora of violence ensues, culminating in a slow-motion duel to the death between hero and villain. Among Hawk's comrades are a dwarf and an elf, who are "R2D2 and C3PO" in everything except name and appearance. Hardly the best of its kind, Hawk the Slayer is redeemed by the unbridled hamminess of Jack Palance, who seems to be the only one who realizes that the whole affair is to silly to be taken seriously.

A time of high adventure, swords and synthesizers!

There's good movies, there's bad movies, then there's campy movies, Hawk the Slayer definitely falls under campy... oh so campy. The entire movie is worth it just to watch Jack Palance ham it up as the evil brother Voltan.
Voltan kills his and Hawk's father in search of a great power, one that is never mentioned again in the entire movie. Hawk is imbued with a sword that can magically show up in his hand, I'm sensing a disturbance in the Force with weapons "magically" being pulled toward the main character.
Along the way, Hawk befreidns a warrior who in turn was in search of Hawk to help when his own village is ransacked and burned. Hawk then seeks to recruit old friends to aid in a quest, the Giant, the Elf, the Dwarf, the hobb... and they set out to take a mystical ring... I mean, save a nun who has been captured by Voltan and return her to their church.
Yes, this particular sword and sorcery/fantasy movie has a very heavy catholic presence in it. There are nuns, churches, a priest, and lots and lots of praying to God. This wouldn't bother me so much except that magic and God do not exactly mesh well together, but I digress, you still have to remember just how hokey this movie is.
The pacing of the movie is kind of up and down and the plot is just your basic, bland good vs. evil. Most of the characters are fairly 2-dimensional and forgetful, though some of the bantering between the giant and dwarf may get you a few smiles and maybe a laugh. Jack Palance seems to be the only one who was having fun and it really shows, he is just so out of place as in this movie. It would be like casting John Wayne to play Merlin.
Fight scenes are hit or miss, using lots of cut scenes and off-camera tricks, you never really see anyone fully fighting and they rely heavily on repeating a scene that lasts only a split second to give you the feeling of an automatic crossbow and an elf that can fire arrows so fast that "you can't even see it". The music is pretty much "blah". It sounds like a mix of traditional instruments, like I'm pretty certain I heard some violins and flutes, but then it turns around and blasts your ears with high screeching synth music that just does not fit this type of movie. The tempo of the music in some scenes doesn't match up either, fast music in a slow scene, loud music when it should be soft, etc.
Overall, not a terrible movie, but if you are wanting to watch something with friends that you can all laugh about, this is one to have

What else is there to say? Avatar became the top grossing movie of all time, ahead of Titanic (another Cameron work). Though, now beat out by Star Wars ep7, it still remains in the top 5 of all time.

This is it, the definitive collection of the epic Lord of the Rings movies. If you had missed out on the awesome DVD extended collection with the novel styled DVD cases, you won't be disappointed when you find that they have done pretty much the same with this set, just smaller packaging. Boasting better picture and sound, plus all the extras you could want, this is certainly worth the money.

Well, I would LOVE to write a review and tell you how awesome DOOM is and how I've been playing it, but I haven't actually been able to play it yet. I'm still download nearly 50gigs of the game that, for some unforeseeable reason, was not included with the disk I purchased.
I don't usually down-rate something based on outside issues, but in this case, the fact that Bethseda didn't actually include the game ON the disks and my meager internet connection is having a conniption trying to download it, I can't recommend this to anyone that lives outside of any town.
No, I'm not on dialup, but I don't have that massively fast super net that everyone else has, so I have to sit and wait until it finishes download. I do hope I don't have to reinstall it after I get it done...

There's lazy, then there's this movie.

Oh where do I even begin...
This was another on my list of bad movies to watch and I tell you what, this may not be the worst of them, but it certainly is the laziest. I do wonder at some point if Roger Corman said "screw it, don't even write a plot, just start filming people doing things".
Some movies go out of their way to find inspiration from other movies (Star Wars influenced by the Hidden Fortress). Some movies blatantly rip off other movies (Any Star Wars clone after '77, mostly Corman films). Then there are some movies that prove it's ok to outright steal one film to make another (Turkish Star Wars, using actual footage and music from Star Wars and more). Space Raiders proves that you can do all that at once and not even give it a second thought.
As I said, not quite the worst, but it is the laziest of the movies I have bought recently. With character so bland, you actually root for them to be knocked off just to make them more interesting. One crew member gets bumped off in the first ten minutes and they spend the next ten trying to make us feel bad for it when we didn't even know his name. None of the characters are even remotely interesting or entertaining.
The "main" character is a 10yo boy named Peter, who stows away on a cargo ship while the space raiders (they actually don't have a name) try to steal it. What ensues is downright pathetic as far as movie making goes. Every bit of action that doesn't involve humans is literally ripped right from Battle Beyond The Stars, another Corman wonder.
They don't even try to hide the fact that you're literally just watching re-cut scenes from that movie. What's worse, James Horner's entire score is also re-cut from Battle Beyond The Stars, with bits from Humanoids From The Deep (one I've yet to see).
Would you like to know more? (Bonus points if you get that reference, since we're talking about ripping things off) You'll recognize a lot of the same stage sets from both BBtS AND Forbidden World (yes, Corman again). In fact, Forbidden World uses some of the same ship battle sequences as BBtS as well.
So, why the 5 stars? I'm not rating this on just how bad it is, but more for how fun it is (like all the others I've reviewed). You just have to shut your brain off and not think about all the plot holes and major errors you see, otherwise you'll have a heart attack from the stress.
It's fun in a way that it will make you appreciate much better made movies that will last for decades to come while ones like this are forgotten, though they shouldn't be, just because it makes the goods ones look so much better.

One of the worst!

If you're like me, you're reading this because you either heard about how bad it is or you've already seen it and wanted to get a copy because it was so bad. There is just so much wrong with this that I can't pick just one thing, you literally have to see it to know.
The plot is simple enough, though confusing at times. The basic story is there was a huge galactic war and now there are only 6 planets left in all of the galaxy that have water and the enemy controls them all. Still not sure how only 6 planets only have water, but I digress, that is one of the confusing parts, among the others.
The Ice Pirates attack and plunder the cargo ships of their precious ice (easier to transport the water, I suppose?). One such ship is also transporting a princess, whom the captain instantly falls in love with, even though it doesn't show at first.
The rest of the movie is just one big car wreck that has caused a train wreck, it has to be seen to be believed and you simply can't look away as it happens.
Along with racism, bad robots, space herpes (yes), castrations, and a twist ending that makes no sense, this is a movie that you will remember fondly... whether you want to or not.

This is one of the movies I would watch all the time growing up, aside from the greats like Star Wars, Star Trek, Back to the Future, etc.
The story goes as two highschool seniors are about to fail science class, one being a gear head and the other is just the typical "doesn't care about science" type.
They stumble upon a strange artifact from the Roswell crash and soon unleash a torrent of strange happenings and soon begin breaking down the walls of space and time itself.
Along with school reporter Elly and their not-so-ex hippy science teacher (played by the late Dennis Hopper, with a bit of his Easy Rider character thrown in), they will soon find that man is not ready to deal with time travel.

You dig giant robots!

Robot Jox, one of the few b-list movies that made it onto the big screen. This was the biggest "low budget" movie at the time and it shows.
The plot takes place an unspecified number of years after a devastating world war. The world is divided into territories and instead of thousands of troops from all armies fight and dying, the battles are now fought by gladiator style fights in giant robots.
There is no CG work here, everything is purely practical effects and stop motion work, some of the best for its time. The movie did suffer from some setbacks as the producer and director wanted two completely different things, but ultimately we ended up with what we have now, slightly less serious with lots of action. If you're any fan of robot movies, this is the one to have.

Megaforce is one of those movies you can't help but love, not because it's good, but because it's just that bad.
The entire plot centers around a pair of fictitious countries that are at war and the Megaforce is called in to help... who also just HAPPEN to be around the same area at that time. They operate sort of like Men In Black, above the law, no trace they exist and can pretty much go where they want, when they want.
The plot itself isn't very deep at all and at some point, you're only going to be watching it for the vehicle battles which are actually not that bad. There are dirt bikes with missiles, dune buggies with lasers, mobile command centers with remote controls to the smaller vehicles, and an air dropped refueling weapon depot. It's something straight out of GI Joe.

Bought this on sale, always wanted one and this was my chance to try it out. It has a nice comfort grip handle, multi-position camera shoe mount to accommodate nearly any type of camera and a moveable/rotating cold shoe at the top of the handle to hold a second camera, microphone, flash, etc.
With two rubber feet on either side, it makes a very stable table mount and the handle helps ensure stability when moving around. The camera shoe screw also has a threaded end so you can even attach your tripod shoe so you don't have to remove the camera from this unit.
