Constantly disconnecting from WiFi

I've had great luck with Arris modems in the past, so I thought a modem/router combo would be great. It would only be one box instead of two, and would only take up one plug. I had recently moved into a new apartment, and I used my laptop mostly in the bedroom where the router was set up. Several weeks later, I received my furniture, and found out that the network would disconnect me every 5 minutes or so when I was outside of the bedroom. By this point, it was too late to return the unit to Best Buy, and Arris wouldn't stand by their product, insisting that it must be interference. I completed their troubleshooting instructions with no success.
tldr: their surfboard modems are great, but maybe think twice about getting a modem/router combo.
