Nice bang for the buck Coaxials

This review is for the Alpine - 6-1/2" 2-Way Component Car Speakers with Poly-Mica Cones.
I bought this pair of Alpine speakers for an audio upgrade in a 2003 Saturn ION 3 Super Coupe 4. It had the premium audio in it, but the rear speakers were 2 ohm speakers that were intended to be a substitute for subwoofers. My daughter likes to balance the fader so the sound is in the middle of the car and the original factory 2 ohm speakers had no ability to reproduce highs or mids.
The rear window deck covered the original speakers so I cut out holes for the speakers and now the deck fits down around the speakers and I attached the speaker covers. Looks great, but it is a lot of work. The sound is really excellent. The one inch tweeters are really good. Not to sharp and the mids are mellow. The quality of the speakers really stood out on the display panel at Best Buy and they didn't disappoint in the car. Really nice bass production. I ran the RCA cables to the back while I had everything apart as I also installed a new radio, so I could install a self powered amplified Sub Woofer in future, but it sounds so good I'm not sure if I will.
I have speakers that I installed in an audio upgrade in my car that were twice the price of these and I now think I wasted my money on them. I think these are a real value for the money.

Pioneer FH-X730BS Bluetooth in dash radio
on May 21, 2017

Verified Purchase:Yes
This is my second Pioneer radio that I used in a car audio upgrade. So far I am really happy with the quality and the abundant features, including adjustments for individual speakers and crossover settings if you have a subwoofer installed. This FH-XS 730 does it all with the exception of having FLAC support for the USB input. You will need the FH-XS830 if you want FLAC support.
The Bluetooth works great. It syncs easily and stays synced with up to two phones. It comes with a mic for hands free phone use. The display lighting colors can be set to your preference or it will randomly change colors. It is Sirius capable, but I did not connect a Sirius receiver to it, although I did connect a Sirius receiver to the FH-XS 830 in the other upgrade that I performed and it worked fine.
I am driving 6 1/2 Coaxials with the tweeters in the door sail panels and a pair of 6 1/2 inch coaxials in the rear deck of a Saturn Ion 3 SC4 from a 50 watt rms per speaker amplifier which I feed with RCA cables from the FH-XS730. I ran extra RCAs to the back to connect a self amplified subwoofer in the future.
Overall a great radio when you feed the DAC a quality feed from either a CD or high quality MP3 files. It also delivers real good quality when feeding it by Bluetooth from a phone or Bluetooth enabled played that employes a high quality DAC. Seems to be little if any loss of quality over Bluetooth.
It will be like any audio device. Feed it all the digital information in a file and it will shine. If you play nothing but FM radio that compresses the signal extremely then don't expect roses from dadelion plants.
Great radio, but if you have a cd collection and want real quality, rip your CDs to FLAC files and buy the FH-XS830 and play them through the USB and let the the radios supperior DAC (digital to audio converter) do the work. Remember, anytime you feed a radio with an analog audio cable or through Bluetooth, the radio basically just becomes a media to transmit the analog feed that you fed it and has no real ability to improve the quality.
Thumbs up on the radio if you have a smart phone. Way safer than holding your phone and the audio is played through your car speakers. When the conversation is ended, the radio goes back to whatever you were listening to.

Excellent 4K video and stills, but it has problems
on June 11, 2016

Verified Purchase:Yes
I have had the Sony RX0 III since the 5th of May. Let's start with the good. It has an excellent lens which maintains very good quality even at 600 mm and that is the only part of this camera that has no downside.
From here on out I will be comparing the pros and cons together. The one inch sensor does well up to ISO 800 and is still very acceptable for noise at 1600 in naturally lit conditions. Pushing it to 3200 for the sake of augmenting flash or being able to use a faster shutter speed in good daylight conditions is acceptable, but at 3200 in dark conditions it starts to fall down rather badly. It produces great quality photos in good light making it a great all around travel camera, you really get to love the long reach of the lens which maintains F/4 even at full telephoto, but it is not going to be an acceptable backup for wedding or event shooters and this is not only because it will not deliver acceptable low light quality, but it suffers terribly when focusing in low light. Sony dropped the ball by staying with contrast detect focusing and not going with phase detection. It has trouble focusing not only in low light, but also in bright sunlight where you have a lot of specular highlights, such as during the mid day sun. It will eventually focus, but don't expect to pull up and shoot your kid stealing second base and expect to have anything useful.
Although it has a good electronic viewfinder it still has viewfinder lag, so be prepared to shoot bursts and start early. This is not a knock on Sony as all non DSLR s will suffer from this. It will be acceptable to the parent who occasionally shoots his or her child's sports events, but there will be a tough learning curve to learn how to deal with the blacking out of the viewfinder when you stop shooting. Until it has cleared the buffer, you will not see anything in the viewfinder, and it makes little difference in time to clear, whether you shoot a burst of 3 shots or 20. So when you track the kid stealing second don't stop shooting until he gets to second and that is the only way you can track a subject. You need to know its route and move the camera with it. You will see the pictures as they are being recorded in the screen or viewfinder so that helps you track, but stop shooting and you have no idea where that subject is until the buffer clears.I want to make all this clear so those who think that this is a great bargain with the long lens and now they can shoot action from a distance, understand that this camera is absolutely unacceptable for anyone who shoots sports and has to get the shot. Not only because of the inability to track the subject, but also because of it's hit and miss focusing problems.
Sorry that I have dashed the hopes of the sports shooters and I know of which I speak, as I shoot many sports events and believe me I tried to make this camera work reliably and I can't do it . I get tired of lugging around my Canon 7D and a 70-300L and I had high hopes for the RX10 III, but the DSLR and good glass gets the shots.
Alright, the camera has its good points otherwise I would have returned it, although I will send it back to Sony as I hope there is something wrong causing the terribly erratic focusing. I find it hard to believe that they would consider this camera acceptable. Also they sold out the first run rather rapidly and I understand that it is not going to be available again for shipping for awhile. Lends me to think that maybe they had to make some corrections.
The good. It shoots really great 4K video and does it very well in less than perfect light. Naturally it will shoot HD and SD, but once you see the 4K quality you will be impressed. Makes my 5D Mark 3 look really bad. It produces MPG files from the XAVC format which you can view on any computer, although it has to have a decent video card to play 4K smoothly. It also shoots s-log for those who want to grade their video. I would also add that it also shoots better quality HD video than my 5D Mark 3, providing you can stay below 1600 ISO, which is quite easy to stay at or below, as the 4K is recorded at 30 FPS so you can use a shutter speed of 1/60th and F/4 for the aperture.
It has an excellent dynamic range and when shooting RAW I process the files in Adobe Camera RAW and the overexposed highlights and underexposed shadows are easily recovered. The JPG files are very good straight out of the camera and will be considered excellent for most purposes. Color rendition is very good. Flesh tones are quite true. The RAW files will be 20 MB and the High Quality JPGs will vary between 5 and 8MB, dependending on if the full spectrum of light that the camera can capture is present.
The camera handles well, is comfortable to shoot with, some of the button placements are not to my liking, but body size constraints enter into that. The aperture is adjusted with a ring on the lens. It has a detent that can be engaged for photos or disengaged for smooth travel when shooting video. The manual zoom ring works well and when set at high speed you can rock the ring back and forth with your thumb to easily zoom silentlly when shooting video.
So in summary this is a very good camera when used as a general purpose camera. Great for traveling. Shoot from 25mm to 600mm, F/2.4 at the wide end, F/4 at full telephoto, great video, nice screen, very good electronic viewfinder and a really high quality lens, but it isn't cheap. Its extreme zoom versatility in an easy to carry package and 4K capability are its selling point. For those who decide to buy this camera, buy extra batteries. It has a rather short battery life and it doesn't come with an individual charger so buy a charger if you want to charge your batteries while you are using the camera. Also download the manual as it doesn't come with one and you will need to read it as it tends to be less than intuitive concerning the features and controls.

Good affordable SSD for the OS Drive
on February 26, 2016
Posted by: FrankM
Verified Purchase:Yes
I use these Sandisk 120 GB SSDs for upgrading desktops or dual drive laptops that are only SATA II capable. These SSDs have very good read and good write performance. Naturally not up to the level of the best SSDs but more than adequate for computers that are limited to SATA speeds of 300 MBs/sec. I haven't had any fail yet, so for the price that they can be had for, they are a bargain for loading your OS on or even for use as a fast scratch disk for Graphics programs. Remember if you have multiple drives you can change the location of the user files to another disk and then 120 GB is large enough for even systems that have unusual amounts of software installed. Remember that SSDs need at least 10 percent of free space in order for them to function properly. For those that are considering using these or any SSD in a Raid0 you will get a nice boost in both read especially write performance but boot times will be slower than a single SSD. This behavior has been constant for me in multiple builds and contrary to the faster boot times of platter drives in a Raid0. Any SSD will turn your currently platter Hard Drive equipped computer into a whole new experience. 500 GB SSDs are now very affordably priced so turn your otherwise fine single drive laptop into something that you will love again. The battery will last a whole lot longer also as it uses much less juice than platter drives and run at way lower temperatures.

Very good contrast and backlight control
on January 16, 2016
Posted by: FrankM
Verified Purchase:Yes
This review is for the 65 inch Samsung UN65JS9000. This model has a curved screen and is an LED edge lit screen.
This is not a professional or troll review. I actually bought this TV from Best Buy and did return two other TVs so I did choose this TV based on comparisons. I want to extend my appreciation to Best Buy for their desire to make sure that I was a satisfied customer. The displays of TVs at the store are in no way related to what we will see in actual use and after many hours of reading reviews to decide, and now that I did decide, I just want to extend my experience so it can possibly help others decide.
I will start with the Pros. Although it is an edge lit screen it is the best edge lit back light LED TV I tested. Granted there is a slight backlight bleed along the left and right side where the back lights are, it not obtrusive and is restricted to the very edge and the rest of the screen is black with no patterns of light bleed anywhere. There are some situations such as with very light areas that are moving on a dark shadowy background that the local diming feature will produce some errant increase in lighting, but it is not severe enough or frequent enough to be considered a detriment. The top and bottom borders when viewing 21:9 content and the side borders when viewing 4:3 content will be black. As I said, it is the best that I tried and I took back one other LED TV and one OLED TV of a brand that I have two of in my house and I was partial to that brand, so I have a good basis for comparison. The blacks and transition of the darkness of the shadows are really very good. This TV can go from brilliant white to black on the same scene really well. I would doubt that it can be outdone in this category by anything but an OLED, which I also tried for two weeks, and you are talking considerably more money.
The contrast and colors are exceptional. The only color that I sometimes question are pure reds that I know are pure dark reds and they will tend to come across as overly luminous or just not what I expect. Please note that I have not done a color calibration with a calibration disk so this may be correctable. I found skin tones to be very good. The quality of the picture when viewing UHD programming from Netflix and Amazon Prime is exceptionally good. When fed a high quality HD feed it is hard to tell the difference between it and the UHD programming, so it is doing an exceptional job of up converting the HD feeds. Please note that you will never see in real life the ridiculously sharp picture that you see on the displays at the store as they use canned feeds that are chosen to show off the TVs strong points. It actually does a real good job with lower quality feeds such as Series on Netflix and Hulu that were shot in 2009 that were recorded in 480P and with cameras that are not as good as today's cameras. I think that the picture quality from these feeds are somewhat better than the really good 2014 1080P TV that I replaced with the JS9000. It will automatically detect HDR programming. It changes the backlight value to 20 and the contrast to 100 in whichever picture mode you are using. I have found that watching the UHD HDR programs on Amazon Prime are the best when using the Dynamic picture mode. I have watched DVDs and Blu-Ray and they are both great. My HD cable service is just perfect on this TV.
The so-so on this TV is viewing angles. The vertical alignment panel is really great for exceptional contrast but colors start to wash out at about 25 degrees off center. (No, the picture will not wash out completely, but the colors will start to degrade and lose contrast). You may not be happy with this TV if you have people that have to watch from greater angles and you better have a tilting mount if you are going to mount it above eye level as it will wash out vertically also and If you watch 3D programming you need to be looking into the center of the screen perpendicularly. Not a fault of this TV. All TVs with VA (Vertical Alignment) panels will have this problem. No such thing as a perfect TV. Not even OLEDs. Although they have exceptional viewing angle attributes they have other issues. As I said, no perfect TVs yet. Sports are alright on this TV. Although it may be better than the IPS panels (In Plane Switching) that LG uses, for controlling smearing of the playing surfaces as the camera pans, it is still not perfect. This TV has pretty decent speakers. Not great, but decent. It has four picture modes which can all be customized to your taste. The standard mode may be usable for the people who are to timid to tackle adjusting the various adjustments, but I can't imagine anyone understanding Samsung's reason for the factory settings of the other modes. None of them are watchable with the factory settings in my opinion.
The not so great. The remote and the ease of navigating the settings operating menu. I am not going to elaborate on this issue. Samsung needs to improve on this. I expect better from a top tier TV. Sorry all you people who think active 3D is great. Having to mess with batteries or expensive rechargeable glasses is probably what is killing the interest in 3D. I have had issues with crosstalk that I never had with my passive 3D TVs.
The JS9000 is very responsive. It starts very quickly. I have it connected by Ethernet to a 100MB/s service and it streams just great. As a note: You will need at least 20 MB/s down to stream UHD TV and you will have to connect with Ethernet at that speed. If you are connecting with wireless you better have at least 35 MB/s down and not be to far from your router. Switching between apps is fast and smooth. Surfing the internet was pretty decent. I think if you connected a keyboard to it you would be quite happy.
In summary I settled on the UN65JS9000 because it's picture quality was the best for the price I could afford and for the content that I watch the most. It's black level capabilities and good control of backlight bleeding was the reason that I choose it. It's excellent ability to display a great picture with UHD content and do such a good job of up converting HD content is a real plus. It also produces very smooth out of focus backgrounds that are so prevalent in the way programming is shot now, and the digital noise in the shadow areas of dark scenes is also rendered quite smooth.
Having four HDMI inputs is also a plus. The external control module may be a disadvantage to wall mount installations, but at the same time may be a plus if it allows you to upgrade to a new module to be able to adapt to future protocols. One thing I didn't comment on is the curved screen. It mounts fine on a standard mount. They provide adapters to adjust the curve to a straight line. I really don't think the curve adds a great deal to the viewing experience and it does have a problem with reflections being spread laterally across the screen. I can't speak on the stand as I mounted it to a bracket on a pedestal. The bezel is not pure black, but is not shiny so I don't find it obtrusive.
If you can live with its limited viewing angle ( no, the picture is not going to completely wash out, but the colors will start to lose their contrast) and If 3D is going to be a family event and you are willing to pay 50 bucks for each set of rechargeable glasses or 20 bucks for battery glasses which have a short battery life, this is a TV that you should love. Bravo to Samsung for their control of backlight bleed and the ability to produce nearly perfect blacks on this UN65JS9000.

Great little chest freezer
on December 12, 2015

The Insignia 7 cubic foot chest freezer is one of the best values that I have ever purchased. We always are lacking for freezer capacity even with our extra fridge in the garage. We didn't have room for a large chest freezer and this fit right into the small area we had. The extra capacity was just enough to unclutter our freezers in the refrigerators and give us enough extra room to take advantage of meats or other frozen foods when they are on sale.
It is working great. The lid seals well and it is a great bargain regarding cost and space efficiency. Also it is not exceptionally heavy so it is easy to move.
It is 37.5 inches wide, 21 inches deep, 33 inches tall and needs a 50 inch vertical space to be able to open the door far enough to get food in and out comfortably.

Anyone noticing Clouding or Light bleeding on their UN65JS9000 TV?

Hi,
I spoke to many best buy reps at different stores showing pictures of my TV with clouding. All of them are saying this is normal in a bigger edge lit TV. None of them seems to be concerned about this issue. I'm a bit worried having paid so much for this TV. I noticed the clouding in a dark room with dark backgrounds. I have attached some pictures of it. Pls note this picture was taken in "Dynamic" picture settings with my TV. Let me know if this is an issue with my TV. Thanks

Are you really seeing anything that you aren't trying to find when you watch programing. What you are seeing here is being caused by the local dimming being fooled by the white letters on the dark blue background. If you are seeing what the photo shows in dark areas of regular shows then definitely schedule service under warranty. Although this is the best TV I have seen for controlled light bleed I will see a little around the edges with a black screen but absolutely nothing that distracts from the picture while watch shows. There is no such thing as absolutely no backlight bleed on an LCD TV regardless of whether it is an LED edge lit or even a full array backlit TV. The only TV that achieves that is the LG OLED and it does a much worse job of transitioning of shadow areas than this TV does. No such thing as a perfect TV, but this JS 9000 is a real bang for the buck when top quality is the priority.

What's the best wall-mount for this TV?

I'm first timer wall-mounting my TV. I love my curve TV. I have the below questions.
1. Which is the best wall mount for this TV.
2. What type of wall mount is recommended for this TV i.e. full-motion or a fixed mount ?
3. Do we need use a professional wall-mount installation services like Geek-Squad?
Depends where you put it. If you mount it above eye level from where you sit then you will want a tilting mount as this TV will lose contrast and color definition if viewed from off perpendicular line of sight. Buy a mount that has rails and that the hanger hanger arms only attach to the TV. Then hanging the TV on the mount is easy. I wouldn't pay to hang it unless you absolutely are mechanically challenged. It isn't that hard to do. So far as a swiveling mount, if it will be on the exterior of the wall or in a recess where it can be turned, the curve of the screen would allow for some side to side movement with just a swiveling mount. If you want extreme movement then the only option is a full motion mount on an arm.

How cold does it freeze? What is the interior temperature operating range?
The temp is adjustable. It will get cold enough to freeze whatever you would expect to put in a freezer, rock solid.

Can this unit operate at refridgerator tempuratures? Like a spare, emergency fridge?

Not sure, but if you turn it up that far it may frost up, but it may work for short service. Never tried or thought of that.
