the software that is included with this UPS i believe its called powerchute, once we plug the usb in from the APC UPS to the desktop computer and the software installs, do we have to keep the usb plugged in at all times for the software to work properly?

It is a constant monitor to the UPS and it has to be plugged in to do anything with the UPS.
