Love the Netgear

This is actually a replacement for my battered old Netgear cable modem / wifi router which has finally started to give up the ghost.
Set up was a breeze, and it's been working great for more than a month now.
My only complaint - and for me it's a minor thing because I don't use this functionality, but it might not be for everyone - is that despite having the physical ports for connecting an external USB drive to provide rudimentary network storage, the OS of the AC1600 doesn't support connections for Windows 10 unless you enable an older and less secure networking protocol - which I can't recall at the moment.
Helpful, ain't I :)
According to Netgear this is being changed but as of 14 April it's still not properly supported. If the added USB drive plays a part in your decision then you might want to skip the AC1600 until Netgear updates the firmware.

iPad mini 4 has a gorgeous 7.9-inch Retina display, yet it's only 6.1mm thin and weighs just 0.65 pounds, making it small enough to hold in one hand. It has a powerful A8 chip with 64-bit desktop-class architecture, advanced iSight and FaceTime HD cameras, Wi-Fi and LTE connectivity, iCloud, the breakthrough Touch ID fingerprint sensor, and up to 10 hours of battery life. It also includes great apps for productivity and creativity, and powerful new features in iOS 9 like multitasking. And there are even more incredible apps available in the App Store.

Love / Hate

I love iPads. I've got three of them going back to an original and still working version 1 from shortly after they came out. I've also got three or four flavors of Android tablets, a couple of Kindles, and a pretty spiffy Asus Windows 10 two in one lap top with a detachable keyboard that works great as a tablet, but for certain tasks the iPad can't be beat.
I use iPads almost exclusively for reading web pages and watching streaming video and it's perfect for that.
What I hate is iTunes. Part of the reason I don't watch my own saved movies, or read my own saved books on an iPad is the infernal lengths I have to go to in order to transfer a single PDF from my computer to the iPad. I'm sure that some of this is me, but I'm not alone in this. My sister who lives and works in the figurative shadow of Apple's corporate HQ, and who is as Apple a person as I am not, loathes iTunes just as much as I do.
Perhaps it's genetic :)
Anyway, the mini itself is great. It's much smaller than my full size tablets obviously, but the screen is crisp and the size hasn't caused any problems with my stubby fingers using it. I haven't checked the specs on this one as compared to my older two but it's noticeably faster as I'd expect it would be. The extra memory - the other two are both pokey 16 GB device - is nice but I don't imagine I'll come close to needing it.
I got it during one of the holiday sales at $299 which also makes me smile - though I'm sure by now that's the MSRP.

I'm off on a once in a life time sort of vacation soon and while my phone has a great camera in it, I'll be doing a lot of snorkeling and I just wasn't confident in the various ZipLock bags that are sold for using a phone underwater, so I prowled around for a sturdy camera to take to the wet places.
The TG-5 is waterproof to 50 feet - way deeper than I'm likely to go, so that's perfect. It's also shock resistant, and crush resistant - though I'm hoping not to test those out :)
Unlike most new cameras, it does not have a touch screen which is the most common criticism I've seen of it, but those critics don't seem to be aware that touch screens don't work very well - if at all - under water. All of the controls on the TG-5 are physical and work above and below the surface.
I also picked up a flash diffuser for use underwater, and the telephoto lens kit, both of which are also waterproof - though I doubt I'll risk changing lenses in the middle of the south Pacific :)
I've only been practicing with the camera so don't have any particularly notable photos to share that aren't of my dining room table. The attached was taken in the alley behind my house, late in the day when the sky was a pretty striking shade of pink. The only change to the file was exporting it from Olympus' native raw format (OPF) to a JPEG to upload.
I will say that I don't much care for the Olympus Viewer 3 software. So far it's the only thing I've found which can export the OPF files, but I haven't looked too hard and I'm sure someone's got a plugin for Photoshop.

... Boo.
That's right, in order to use the NAS on my network I had to sign up for Western Digital's free cloud storage service and apparently their stab at social media.
I'm a computer person, I am NOT social. I don't want to sign up for anything, especially not just to make use of a hard drive. And part of the reason for throwing another 4 GB at my network is so that I don't have to use cloud based storage which at the end of the day is just storing my data on someone else's hard drive. If I'm going to do that why would I buy a drive of my own?
That all said, the drive itself has been flawless. It's zippy fast and doesn't suffer from the hibernation delay that an older NAS I was using did.

Google Home Mini is a smart speaker powered by the Google Assistant, so you can ask it questions and tell it to do things. Just start with "Ok Google" to enjoy your entertainment, get answers from Google, tackle your day, and control your smart home. Google Home Mini works on its own or you can have a few around the house, giving you the power of Google anywhere."

Take this with a grain of salt because I'm pretty heavily invested in the Amazon Alexa system.
I picked the Home Mini up when it was on sale over the Thanksgiving weekend so it was $30 and Best Buy tossed in a $10 gift card. Call it an extremely nerdy impulse buy :)
The setup was easy as could be and as compared to when I set up my Alexas, the Home is much easier. It only took a minute or so and I didn't have to change the WiFi on my phone which is always nice.
My first complaint is "Ok Google". Say it out loud. My tongue fumbles over it every time. I don't use it on my Samsung phone for that very reason. The Alexa has a few alert word options - Alexa, Echo, and Computer, all of which are much easier to say.
My house is also overflowing with Philips Hue lights, all of which I can control through the various Alexas I've got. I tried setting up home automation with the Home and things sort of ground to a halt. To date I haven't had any luck with it but to be fair it's the pre-holidays so things have been hectic and I haven't really given it any additional time.
I'd say that if you're already an Alexa user that the Home may be too late for you. If you're dipping your toes into smart speakers and home automation it's worth a look.
Especially if they let you change it from "Ok Google" :)

I'm slowly converting my house over to all Hue lighting, and when these were on sale over the Thanksgiving weekend I had to grab a couple. They're set up on either side of my home office desk and I've discovered that using an app like Hue Dynamic - which can generate automated scenes such as a bright day with clouds floating overhead - has been really reduced eye strain.
With regular LED bulbs selling for a dollar or two paying $30 to $45 for a single bulb admittedly does sound a little crazy but if you slowly transition you'll wind up not feeling the bite too badly and you'll love it.

For LIGHT mobile phones

I bought this as a "quick fix", and it's small and light enough that I've kept it despite a big short coming. My phone is a Samsung Note 8, and with a case and mounting bracket on it, it's heavy enough that the weight of it can cause the tripod's mount to move unless the phone is perfectly centered.
If you're using a smaller phone than the Note 8 - and who isn't :) - you'll probably be fine, but I imagine that there's something better out there for just a little more money.

Hardware is great...

...Software less so.
If you're not familiar with the idea of a camera gimbal, it's a gizmo that holds the camera steady while you move to reduce the "shaky cam" effect. The Osmo Mobile has other bells and whistles, but that's the main function and that works great.
The issue I have is with the software that is used in conjunction with the Osmo. The DJI Go app - the DJI Go For app that is used with things like the Mavic Pro and Phantom series of drones doesn't support the Osmo devices - works fine on my Note 8 with one huge - at least to me - glaring exception.
It doesn't support 4K video. 1080p is as high as it goes. I specifically bought this phone for its camera capabilities and not being able to use them when using the features built into the DJI Go software to take advantage of the gimbal is a serious let down.
I can use any camera app on the phone, so I can still shoot 4K video but I loose active tracking, time lapse and moving time lapse, lots of features that I really want to have.
Lots of Osmo Mobile owners have brought this up to DJI on the DJI forums, and it's a software issue so if DJI wants to fix it they can with a simple update to their app. As to whether or not they want to fix it.
Of course, they also sell an Osmo device with its own built in 4K camera. Since that Osmo also uses the DJI Go app it clearly isn't a limitation of the software - well, that's not correct. It's an artificially imposed limitation. I suspect that it's literally a single line of code something to the effect of:
if(deviceMode == "Osmo Mobile") {disable4K;}
I've actually contacted DJI support on this and the frankly very thin explanation is that they (DJI) can't be certain of the phone's capabilities.
I think it's safe to assume that anyone dropping $300 for something to improve their phone based photography stands a good chance of also having a phone that can support 4K. And even if they don't it could easily be an option in the app.
Looking back at this is sounds like I hate the Osmo and that's not the case. I've really enjoyed it, and as I said at the start it works great, it's just the artificial limitation imposed - as best as I can tell - to try and upsell me to a more expensive device that's costing them a star.

Okay, cards on the table, I got an email from Best Buy offering 25 Reward points for a review of a Mavic battery so here I am, but there's not a ton to say. It's kind of a yes or no thing. Is it a working Mavic battery? If so, 5 stars, if not 1 star.
So... Five stars!
That said you really can never have enough of these things - in fact I'll likely use the 25 points from this review towards another Mavic battery...
And then another review and another 25 points and another...

Very handy tablet

I bought this tablet as an open box return. I wanted something to use with my DJI Mavic Pro drone that was large enough for my poor eyesight and sausage like fingers, but which still would fit in the drone remote control.
The Tab 7 runs all of the pertinent apps - DJI Go, the FAA's B4UFly, and the collection of other apps I've accumulated since picking up the Mavic. It's much easier to use than my Galaxy S6 Edge was and as a bonus has an extra bright "sunlight" switch which actually makes the screen usable in direct sunlight.
It does fit in the Mavic controller, though it's just large enough to be a little awkward. Not enough so to be a problem though.

Would this DJI - Osmo Mobile Gimbal Stabilizer work with a Samsung Note?

I'm using it with my Note 8 - and just to be a daredevil it's still in a silicone case. I did have to add a few grams of counter balance to the gimbal arm to level it but since then it's worked great.
