If you are a guy and your girlfriend isn't all that into zombies, this one might be a good gateway into the genre. It tells a story that is very reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet while still managing to remain a zombie film. If nothing else, this movie is unique.
While Chronicles of Riddick was a disappointing sequel to Pitch Black, Riddick is a different story. After all the work that went into funding it and putting it together, the creators were sure to deliver something worth watching. It returns to the roots and has a feel that is much more like Pitch Black. This is one that I am happy to include on my shelf!
The movie itself is quite good. It runs a bit long and can be rather monotonous at points, but it easily puts up a fight with the first movie in terms of quality.
I like Mark Wahlberg, but he seems somewhat out of place in this one. A movie like this just isn't his gig.
More than anything though, the climactic scene makes the movie. Very large and explosive with a great new element for the films.
Now onto the 3D. I did not notice a single 3D pop-out gimmick in this movie which is a very good thing. Avoiding gimmicks is the difference between having 3D to enhance the movie and having 3D to be an amusement park ride. The 3D is in this movie to make it deeper and fuller rather than to play pop-up book. Having been filmed in 3D as opposed to converted, it looks quite good. No complaints here.

Now onto the steelbook. Largely, this is the only reason I actually bought the movie. It's not the highest quality steelbook I've seen, but it looks quite good. Unfortunately, the inside image is just of a metallic texture.
The biggest problem I have with it is that I looked through every single case in the entire store and not a single one was without damage. This is why I say the quality of the case is poor. All cases have manufacturing damage (not shipping damage) on either the spine and/or the bottom right front of the case. Very disappointing to go to the checkout knowing that I'm purchasing an imperfect steelbook because I have no other option.
Decent movie with a steelbook that has something more to be desired.
