Cool Zombie flick, similar style as Zombieland

A pretty funny zom-com much like Zombieland, with crass humor and outrageously inept subject matter. *SPOILERS* Mainly that our lovable zombie horde this time, are children that have fallen ill after consuming an infected batch of chicken nuggets. *END SPOILERS* As implausible as this situation could ever be, the dynamics of poking humor at it were achieved quite well, which leads to some gory and very impractical methods of staving off the zombie horde. The movie never quite becomes frightful at any moment, but if one purchases the Bluray or DVD, there are a couple of deleted scenes, particularly with original and alternate endings that "echo" the mood from the nostalgic & creepy conclusion of NOTLD. I enjoyed the film although I did find it a notch below Zombieland, but still a recommended view for zombie enthusiasts, horror movie buffs, or even fellow fans of the Walking Dead series. 4 Stars

Not that he was terrible in his role, but rather, it was a poor selection to be cast in this film after the success of John Wick. The story about a husband who, after attempting to play the role of good samaratin, is deceived by a pair of nubile vixens -- who are simply conniving blackmail artists using the power of their sexuality to their full advantage. While interesting a concept, the movie is not only far too predictable from the onset, but seemingly a less polished version of a 70's snuff film. 3 stars

Nice horror western

Bought this a awhile back, as I tend to enjoy western/settlement style throwback films (see Django and Revenant). Great setting, character dialogue, and acting make the western feel of this story pretty top notch; although it's not until the movie begins throwing you a curve with its horror elements, that you'll either truly enjoy or dislike this film. If you liked either The Burrowers or Ravenous, then this horror movie would likely appeal to you. Overall, a solid horror film, 4 Stars.

Bought this for a cousin's birthday, as how much we both enjoyed rewatching the original this past Halloween and my cuzz didn't own any copies of it. Made a perfect gift, and that its BluRay is even better. One thing to keep in mind is that this in not the Ultimate Collectors edition (which features the now infamous H6 Producer's Cut), but rather just the original 6 films with both H2O & Resurrection, plus both RZ remakes for a grand total of 10 films inside two cases. Not bad considering I got it even more slightly reduced fee by price matching it and using a $5 coupon. Good deal, would recommend if you enjoy the Halloween series or do not already own any previous versions.

He's back, he's green, and he's mean in the monster hit Godzilla 2000. Columbia's work on this 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is very nice. With bold, bright colors and well saturated black levels, the transfer is nearly clear of any defects, save for a small amount of grain in a few key scenes. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround, both in a dubbed English soundtrack. The 5.1 mix features a very full range of effects in both the front and rear speakers, plus a thumping, bombastic bass that should give any home theater a through and rough workout. Also included on this disc is a French Dolby 2.0 soundtrack along with English and French subtitles. This monster disc includes a few extra features for Godzilla 2000 fans, including a very enlightening audio commentary by Michael Schlesinger, film editor Michael Mahoney, and sound editor Darren Paskal, discussing the American version of this film (compared to the original Japanese version). Also included on this disc is a short two-minute behind-the-scenes look at the film, a few talent biographies, and theatrical trailers for the Godzilla remake and Anaconda.

The New Millennium Godzilla

After an underwhelming attempt from Tristar to bring Godzilla into the US mainstream, Toho sought to dig back into Godzilla's ancestral roots, and resurrect him from the fiasco that was Godzilla '98. Though he was menacingly featured throughout his fantastic Heisei series run that culminated in his climactic death in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995), his millennium return would prove to be just as nefarious as his previous version, but in more of a natural and instinctive way. His design was a bit more radical, but was still kept in line with his iconic image of a trademark Rex-like stature with triple rows of spiny dorsal plates down his tail; rather then just some overgrown mutated iguana. His more traditional looking appearance returned (of course, a huge confidence booster for die hard G-fans), and now heading into a worldwide release, including the good old US for big screens everywhere. Toho, not surprisingly, pulls out all the stops in this re-imaging of the Big G yet again. The story revolving around his re-emergence around Japan, and the mysterious origin of a gigantic, ancient rock structure of sorts. Soon though, the Japanese discover the rock to actually be a UFO and all mayhem ensues when the now revealed spaceship -- hidden inside initially -- attempts to energize itself with the cells of Godzilla in order to regenerate itself. Godzilla doesn't exactly take kindly to unwelcomed visitors, so a battle of epic proportions soon begins. Godzilla and the UFO cause even more havoc & destruction in their climatic standoff, in which eventually, the alien spaceship digresses and reveals a life-form inside itself, which coincidentally begins to transforms into one ugly mother....well, its given the code name Orga, which is dreadfully uninspiring btw. Inevitably, the two beasties duke it out, and Tokyo is decimated yet again. The film will appeal to G-fans the best, because it's all back to basics with this film, even with Godzilla's new retro design. There are no gimmicks, tricks, or fads pulled out in this film; it's just a straightforward monster flick with some straightforward monster brawling action. And at least this time around, it really IS Godzilla! The US would have to wait until 2014 to get some bit of redemption in remaking another Godzilla project, albeit with a much better reception after handling Godzilla's overall design with more care. But the movie concept & tone, well, what can I say....we still need to keep working on it I suppose. There are future US sequels yet to come, as well as ANOTHER Japanese re-boot in store as well. Godzilla 2000 was a nice film though, and it was good to see him (the Japanese version) on the big screen when this movie was initially released. His fandom is definitely gonna stick around for the ages. Long live the King of Monsters! 3 1/2 Stars

Frank Darabont's critically acclaimed, quietly popular 1994 debut The Shawshank Redemption comes to DVD in a simple presentation that features a widescreen, anamorphic transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio, a stills gallery, and the theatrical trailer. With an understated, well-crafted film like this one, the focus should be on the finished work, but a Darabont commentary, filmography, "making of" featurette, and other extra features would make a nice counterpart to the film's restraint. Hopefully, Warner Home Video will see fit to release a deluxe version of The Shawshank Redemption that gives the film the treatment it deserves.

Not as grand a spectacle as such timeless classics like Casablanca, The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, The Godfather, Star Wars, or more recent films like Titanic, Gladiator, T2, Jurassic Park and The Departed....but nonetheless a great movie experience. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman absolutely shine in the story and deliver top notch performances in this Stephen King adaptation from Frank Darabont. Their character interaction really invigorates the true heart of the story, and what a magnificent story it is. Its a powerful, thought-provoking & soul inspiring movie, but underneath it all, its simply a life lesson about the perseverance of hope & the testament of unwavering friendship, even in the most dire of circumstances. In watching the story unfold, you'll likely identify something very personal in your own life with a scene, a character, or a moment in this uncomplicated movie. Highly recommended to all. 5 Stars

Fun holiday movie for the family!

Arnold is back! This time its comedic Arnold playing opposite Sinbad in a parody of overzealous shoppers fighting over the "hottest toy of the Christmas season". Though not a masterpiece by any means, nor his best performance, the movie is essentially a mash-up of Arnold's light-hearted Kindergarten Cop and non-action Twins persona rolled into one. In it, he's a sensitive father figure just trying to please his son, whom he feels he disappoints at every turn. He therefore promises to fulfill his son's wish for his favorite action figure toy, unaware that he'll later receive some stiff competition from the wise-cracking Sinbad, who likewise, has his eyes set on obtaining the very same toy for his own son. Their playful banter results in an all out battle to claim the last remaining action figure, setting up a roller coaster of laughs and non-stop hijinks between the two. A great holiday movie to watch with the kiddos. 3 1/2 Stars

Great bargain for a mini Sci-Fi monster collection

Already having owned 3 of the 4 titles on this set, it is well worth the cheap bargain bin price (normally 5 bucks) to pick this up and add it to your collection if you are a monster movie buff that doesn't already own them, or if you really don't want to shell out the additional $8 - $17 for a new single high-def copy of each individual version. Both "It Came From Beneath the Sea" and "20 Million Miles to Earth" are classic Ray Harryhausen staples that are already featured in an actual collector's DVD set, or can be purchased separately as well -- and contain numerous special features unlike the 2 versions included here. The inclusion of these two movies alone are easily worth the $5 its being sold for, in my honest opinion, let alone getting two more monster movies in the set. Ray Harryhausen was known for his splendid stop-motion animation sequences, and both of these films display his talent wonderfully. As for the other two movies, "The Giant Claw" is one of the "so bad, its good" big-bug/creature features of the early era, as the titular character is such a poorly conceived and terribly designed monstrosity. Its quite funny seeing the seriousness of the human characters acting alongside the screen shots of this unbelievably god-ugly turkey "flying" in the air. Overall, I didn't care much for this movie, and it just as easily could have been replaced with something far much better. "Mothra" on the other hand, is a legendary Toho Pictures film akin to Godzilla movies, but it is a bit awkward including this within the current set being that the other 3 movies are all American produced features and were filmed in B&W. Still, it remains very much a welcome addition to this collection as it is such a magnificent movie itself, done with creative style and taste. I only wished that the set could have included another Toho film instead of the aforementioned "Giant Claw", such as "War of the Gargantuas" or "King Kong vs. Godzilla" as it would have made the set far more enticing to purchase. But the movie I would have clamored most to see in place of "The Giant Claw" in this collection would have been either "Varan the Unbelievable" or "Gigantis the Fire Monster" (aka "Godzilla Raids Again") since both of these were also in B&W. Outside this little rant of mine, the 4 movies included make a neat little collection to own and are each, in themselves, fairly entertaining movie fare especially if you enjoy old classic monster movies. My biggest gripe would be that there is only a single disc with all 4 features compressed onto it, so that means no special features, subtitles, scene selections, movie trailers or anything else significant at all, with exception of the main menu screen that simply allows you to play the movie of your choice. Still, not bad for $5 if you don't own any of these films yet, or if you got kids that really like watching older monster flicks on TV. 4 stars out of 5

Pretty hilarious buddy comedy, from the same duo (Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) that starred in indie favorites like Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. A much simpler plot to follow this time around, regarding a pair of geek-inspired tourists who make the pilgrimage to America, ready to indulge in the pop cultural phenomena known as Comic Con. Along this journey however, they have planned a little UFO road trip excursion that takes them thru various points of interest including along Area 51 in Nevada. Its at this juncture where our two heroines come face to face with a misplaced extra-terrestrial visitor simply known as Paul (voiced by you know who already). In the aftermath of this encounter, a caravan full of hijinks ensue (literally!), including a preposterous amount of witty banter -- as one would come to expect of Rogan's character -- as well as various cameo appearances sprinkled throughout, in an effort to re-unite Paul back to his home planet. All this leads to a surprisingly fresh, fun-filled adventure reminiscent of a supremely nerdy yet comical version of Spielberg's E.T., albeit with distinctively less tears and affection, but with an abundance of laughter and humor in its place.
