Rolf de Heer's extraordinary portrait of one very unusual man entering the world at the age of 35 finally gets a well-deserved authorized release on North American DVD, and Blue Underground have thankfully done right by the material. Bad Boy Bubby has been transferred to disc in letterboxed format at its original widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1, which has been enhanced for anamorphic playback on 16 x 9 monitors. The image is clear and well detailed, capturing the film's often-grimy look very well indeed. The audio is presented in two formats, Dolby Digital Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1; both sound superb, though the surround mix loses just a bit of the binaural point-of-view effect of de Heer's original soundtrack. The dialogue is in English, with no multiple language options. A number of worthwhile bonus features have been included in this edition, most notably onscreen interviews with director de Heer, who discusses his bold and innovative approach toward the material, and leading man Nicholas Hope, who talks about what went into bringing Bubby to life. Also included is Confessor Caressor, a short film starring Hope which inspired de Heer to cast him as Bubby, the film's original trailer, and a gallery of still photos and advertising artwork. Blue Underground is to be congratulated for giving Bad Boy Bubby the North American release it merits, and for going the extra mile to treat this remarkable film with the respect it deserves.
This is a good movie. Not for children or people who are easily offended. He is a child in mid-age life. It seems to be about people who, hide behind their region, to disguise the evilness.
