Easy Setup, Good Throughput. With Caveats

Very easy to setup using your iPhone (cannot speak to android). Worked well right from beginning.
The issue I saw was when moving from one location in the home to another ...where you'd assume that your device would be passed from one mesh router to another. What I saw is that some of my devices would do that... move from one router to the closest to you...but others would stay attached/connected to the furthest router with the weakest signal (which made no sense). I called link sys and spent a lot of time with tech support (bumped up to level 2/3 not the general first line tech support who just want you to go through the install process again).
What I learned is that I'm not alone in seeing this (and to be honest I don't see it all the time and not with every device...) - it's a known issue which they are working on software to correct. Supposedly there is a release coming soon which should fix it.... but it's not out yet... thus I take one star away.
other than this issue, I've seen better bandwidth than having a router/extender setup which this replaced. Overall I'm happy with this but for the price, this issue I raised above should not be there. The other minor issue is that the app you use to monitor which station which device is attached doesn't show all the devices which are connected... which is bad from a security perspective and clearly a software issue... hopefully also fixed with an upcoming release. I did contemplate giving 3 or lower stars due to the price and fact that such a pricey system should not have such issues... but generally this is working better than the system it replaced.

If you've had an iPad before, this one will be familiar, but snappier and the extra inch or so of space makes a big difference in readability and the iPads version of multi-tasting. This bigger screen will be more useful when the new iOS comes out in the fall, but it also is more vibrant. Speakers are nice and loud and clear. Love taking notes on it with the pencil. Only real downside is the price... all else is truly great. Didn't think I'd buy the expensive keyboard cover from apple, but did do it and love it. Still think its way overpriced, but works amazing and no batteries to change or charge.

We got this on a one-day special and took a chance. I would say that Alexa generally works better than Siri on most things and more consistently. The speaker alone is good, but the ability to play radio via TuneIN, Pandora, Amazon Music, etc. is value enough...beyond the little things like saying "Alexa, set a timer for 4 minutes" or "Alexa, what's the weather going to be like?". Overall very impressed with the Echo - recommended highly.

Can I hook up my apple Time Capsule to any of the nodes or the node that is plugged into the router?
If you want to only access the hard drive, I assume you can... if you want the time capsule to extend the range, you'll be negating the benefit of a true mesh router system.
I'd suggest you get a network attached drive and just plug that into one of the velop units. Timeports are no longer supported by apple...so you'll be SOL anyway if there are issues. I replaced a time port setup with these and they work much better than time port.

How is this different or preferable to a basic wifi extender that costs a whole bunch less?
The big difference here for this unit is that the system units communicate with one another without consuming your core bandwidth. Depending on your bandwidth this true mesh router setup can have a profound download/upload speed difference vs. a router with extender. I replaced such a setup and for me I went from max 50 mbps to 260 mbps... so for me, the wasted bandwidth of the units talking to one another (base unit and extender) was big... your mileage may vary.
Also I have seen close to full speed even when connected to the 3rd unit...something I never saw with a base/extender setup... previously I saw a huge drop off in speed when connected to the extender.
The other benefit of this supposedly is that as you walk through your home or location... you're supposed to seamlessly be transferred to the nearest router without any hiccup or disconnection. I have seen an issue with this with some devices and intermittently...when it works, it works well... when not...you get stuck on the farthest note...which requires turning wifi on/off to connect to nearest node. Supposedly this will be fixed with a software update soon ... so this. may be a feature once again.
