My wife was dismayed at the prospect of spending a $100 on a dual carbon/smoke detector, since generally we get these for about $20 a pop for our rental units and since I wanted to install 5 of them, well it was a pricey project but one I feel was worth the cost. First, this unit has the same 10 year life span as the cheaper units we use; however, this Nest can detect both fast and slow burning fires, and a nifty little feature which I'll touch on later is the night light.
Installation is simple and the Nest comes with a wiring diagram, screws, wire nuts, and an easy to follow networking guide if you're planning to install it to your network. I paired all 5 of the Nests to various rooms, hallways, and downstairs areas to my wife's and my phone. Labeling and identifying each one was a breeze.
One of the unexpected features and one that both my wife and i have come to love and appreciate has been the nightlight. When the Nest detects movement at night a soft white ring glows which is enough to light up the hallway in a very soft glow. My son has night terrors and sleep walks and will sometimes wake up in the hallway and he used to get scared since it was so dark. The night lights we used to use were harsh and too bright; however, the nest is very soft and gentle and much to our delight our son doesn't get freaked out walking down the hallway at night any more.
Overall it is an excellent product, albeit somewhat pricey, but one I do recommend especially if you're working on automating your home.
The SURFboard SB8163 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem features 16 downstream x 4 upstream channels for high-speed internet access. It is compatible with major US Cable Internet providers and is best for cable internet speed plans up to 400 Mbps.

My first SURFboard SB6183 was a dud. Tinkered with it for a day or so and I just couldn't get a consistent signal. Decided to call Arris Tech Support before returning it and the agent spent over 4 hours with me on trying various troubleshooting steps before deciding it really was a dud. Returned the unit to Best Buy and tried another unit. This one worked.
I chose this unit due to the fact that while I have one of Comcast's higher tier internet speeds but not really enough to take full advantage of it. The real reason why is that in my area Comcast has 16 bonded downstream channels; this modem has 16 channels at its disposal. Most other DOCSIS 3.0 modems have 8 channels. What this translates to is that my 105Mbps plan is averaging around 125Mbps. Does this mean that if you run out and buy this modem you're going to get an automatic 10% speed increase? Not necessarily. Lots of things play into your network speed, but if you're in an area in which Comcast supports 16 bonded channels then I would recommend the SB6183 over it's younger brethren.
The unit is white so it does clash with my all black network and home theater equipment which is a bummer, but if color isn't a deal breaker, nor should it be in this case, the Arris is an excellent purchase and well worth the price of admission. Tech support was excellent and knowledgeable by which I was pleasantly surprised by. Overall, the modem has been in use for about 2 months and I would highly recommend it.
