Another solid Sony product

The new gen SRS-XB33 makes some basic improvements over previous models. A few things to watch for however... first of all they got rid of the auxiliary jack. Not a deal breaker but I do have a couple of devices that could use the hardline connection since they don't have Bluetooth or NFC. The other disappointment is that the latest gen isn't compatible with the older gen if you want to connect them together in Party Connect mode. Since I have a previous model I was hoping to use them in tandem in stereo mode.
Other than that the rest of the features are rock solid. It's waterproof and dust proof so off to the pool or beach or even camping and it's right at home. With the extra bass mode you can really get a room thumping. You get even more out of it when you use the Sony Music Center app for tablet or smartphone.
I experienced no problems with the Bluetooth as the speakers paired right away with my phone and digital player.
The LED lighting is a great feature if you are into that and if you aren't there is a button on the back of the speaker where you can turn off the lights and just focus on the amazing sound.
Back to the Party Connect feature... if it would work with my previous gen speaker I'd be able to link them both in sound and lighting but again they are only linkable if they are the same generation. There are custom settings for the lights (random flashing or in a circle) and if you want each speaker independent or you can place in stereo mode where some speakers are left channel and some are right channel. In fact you can connect up to 100 speakers but only if they are Sony's SRS-XB43, SRS-XB33, or SRS-XB23. Pretty cool if you have a bunch of friends with same gen speakers.
At just under $150 MSRP they are a great deal just wish they had opened up the compatibility to previous gens and left in the Aux jack.

Needs work

Okay, I've been a Skullcandy fanboy for some time. I still own a pair of the original wired Skullcrushers... man that bass!!!!
While there was a lot of promise for these buds I came away pretty disappointed. Maybe a firmware upgrade will help with some of the issues but honestly these did not meet my expectations.
What I liked...
The fit was great. They fit snug in my ear and I never felt as if they were going to fall out. They include a couple of extra pairs of earpieces to allow you to fit to your personal liking.
The earbuds in ambient mode allow some ambient noise in so if you are trying to carry on a conversation in person you don't have to pull the earbuds out of your ears.
Sound quality is decent enough and they don't sound tinny like some lesser expensive wireless earbuds.
At under $80 the pricing is decent considering what comparable earbuds go for.
What was so so...
The charging case. It is compact and able to charge separately from the earbuds using a USB C cable. It allows for quick charging so with a short time plugged in you can gain a few hours of listening time. While it's rounded edges makes for a comfortable fit in your pocket I found it clumbsy in getting the earbuds in and out of the case. A flat bottom would make docking and undocking the earbuds much easier. I found the lid kept snapping shut on my while I was trying to take the buds out of the case. Just very clumbsy.
The touch controls were spotty for me. Volume worked fine... one tap on right for volume up, one tap on left for volume down. Two taps on right for next track, two taps on left for fast reverse. One tap and 2 second hold for switching in and out of ambient mode... those all worked fine. The EQ mode of 2 taps and a 2 second hold didn't work for me sometimes.
What I hated...
The Skullcandy app is pretty much useless. While it does show that the earbuds are paired and you can swith in and out of ambient mode it also shows what EQ mode you are in but won't allow you to change it from the app thus relying on the tap and hold controls on the earbuds themselves. It really would be nice to be able to switch EQ mode from the app. The app guide says you can change EQ mode but I have yet to find out how you do it. If the control is there its not intuitive.
Bluetooth Pairing!!!!!!! I kept having to repair the earbuds to my iPhone and unfortunately since each pod can be used independently if you prefer using only one for calls, I found it difficult for both earbuds to sync with each other. I constantly had to reset the buds and if for some reason they don't sync together you will see to Indy Evo's in your Bluetooth pairing list and if that happens you can only connect to one at a time. YOU MUST MAKE SURE THE buds SYNC TOGETHER BEFORE YOU PAIR WITH YOUR PHONE. I kept playing the flashing light game. Truly frustrating and really takes away from the convenience of having paired earbuds.
Another issue is most likely due to Bluetooth connectivity. I had a lot of sound dropping in one of the buds. It would cut in and cut out while the other ear would play flawless.
All in all these would be great with a bit of firmware updating because my experience was just okay and I have another brand earbuds that work flawlessly with no hassles, especially with pairing. For day to day use I would gravitate to my other set and leave the Skullcandys as a throwdown pair.

Simple to use and extremely portable

I carry my stress in my mid-back and have been going to a massage therapist once a month for over 10 years to help relieve the muscle tension. I've have burned through a number of electric massagers and while they did a decent job most have been big and bulky. The Theragun's portable size is perfect for a gym bag and it's comparitively low noise lets me use it while watching TV and not disturb others for quick muscle tension relief.
I found the Theragun very simple to use and a great treatment for stress hotspots. I also use it after long bike rides to breakdown lactic acid in my legs. The three speeds lets my fine-tune the impact and being hand-held lets me apply as much pressure as I feel I need and apply it exactly where I need it.
Since it's battery operated and not very large I can take it anywhere. Along with a charger the Theragun comes with a soft carrying case making it extremely portable. The battery life should last me for days between charges.
All in all a pretty handy massager that provides satisfying results for tension and after workouts.

Great budget Android TV with exceptions

HiSense is making a stab at Android TV using Google Assistant. For me it has been a big bag of muddled mess trying to get it to work properly. I have a Google Home with the TV registered properly and for the life of me I can't get it to play anything on my Vudu account even though the app is installed and it says it searched but cannot find the movie I want to play, but I can use the remote and click on the app and display my movies and the movies are right there. Being an Android system it does try to find the movie in Play Google first but doesn't seem to look at those movies I own. Very frustrating. I finally gave up trying to get it to work with Google Home. I was hoping for better results with Google Assistant on the included remote but didn't fair any better so tossing in the towel for now but hopefully they will address this problem in future software updates.
It is also Alexa capable but I didn't fair any better getting it setup. It required a 3rd party remote app for Android or iOS and the TV to be set on Wi-Fi while I have it connected via Ethernet. Online reviews of the software weren't very kind. I tried several times to get the TV to connect to my wifi without luck... tried all channels of my wifi router with no luck
As a Smart TV using Android it actually does perform very well. I did have an initial setup problem and ended up resetting the TV back to factory settings and started over. Since then it's work flawlessly (with exception of the poorly executed Google Assistant and Alexa mentioned above). The programming menus are easy to scroll through. Accessing your favorite provider requires you to login but some of them have online activation from a PC (because I hate typing with an on screen keyboard with the remote). I was able to pair a bluetooth keyboard/trackpad with the TV and it made entering userid and passwords much easier. You can even buy movies, games or other SmartTV apps through the Google Play store which you can access from the TV home screen. Being a Disney+ subscriber I was happy that you are able to install the app to the home page, along with other providers like Hulu, ESPN, HBOGo, Showtime, Epix, etc. Very convenient.
The remote is better than most I’ve seen. Where brand S went with minimalistic remotes I do love that the HiSense remote has a lot of features built in. I love the fact they have quick access buttons on the remote for Netflix, Youtube, Vudu and Google Play. The does have Google Assistant with voice control which, when it works properly, is an added bonus (see problem with Vudu movies above).
The picture quality is amazing for a $600, 65” 4K UHD TV. Much better contrast than other value targeted TVs. I do like the quick menu for picture quality presets, sound output (TV speaker, bluetooth or ARC soundbar).

As far as installation goes it does have a VESA mount for wall mounting but I also like the fact that the feet that come with it have two locations so if you have a slightly narrower table top you pick the innermost foot mounts. BONUS!!!!
All in all I think this TV is a great value for the money. Not a major name brand but if you are on a budget and still want a good quality 4K TV you can’t go wrong grabbing one of these. Lets just hope a software update comes soon to fix the issues I had with getting Google Assistant to work correctly.

the time has come and gone...

If you are budget minded and still have a stash of CDs at $30 this might be a good player for you if aren't expecting too much other than a simple player. It's extremely simple to operate. Play/Pause, Stop, Forward, Reverse buttons on a oval pad. Above and below the digital display are these buttons: Play mode - shuffle, play once, play loop and intro only which plays 10 seconds of the beginning of each song and then goes to the next; ESP - is electronic skip protect to reduce skipping while slightly jostled (more later); Equalizer - gets you flat, pop, rock or surround (more about surround later)
Below the display is PROG which lets you program the order you want to play the songs and then up and down volume buttons
On the side you get a headphone jack, DC power input (power adapter not included) and the open top slider.
What I like... not really much. It is what it is... an inexpensive CD player as the whole world is going digital but if you do have a bunch of CDs that you haven't ripped then this might work for you.
What I didn't like. First the earbuds that come with this are terrible. I even got a lot of static if the earbud plug rotated in the jack and the sound... mehhh. First thing I did was pull out a decent set of earbuds and headphones where the sound is much better. Second thing I didn't like is the ESP... it really only protects from the slightest of jostles so don't think about carrying this while jogging or mountain biking. Lastly the Equalizer in Surround mode... terrible!!! I don't know what they were going for but it certainly isn't surround sound.
Look... at the price point it may be a decent value but it's not much cheaper than a low end digital player that you will get better sound, smaller package and you wouldn't need to lug around a CD case.
The CD player's time has come and gone so I find it difficult to recommend this player to anyone... Sorry Memorex

Great value gaming/all purpose mouse
on March 27, 2020

SteelSeries has a lot of great gaming periphrials. I own a couple of keyboards and I have a gaming laptop that sports a Steel Series keyboard as well. So, I've been interested in trying one of their mice.

At a penny less than $30 the price on these makes it a great value optical gaming mouse. It's got ergonomic styling so my hand doesn't cramp up during extended playing time. The 6 buttons allow flexibility in programing to suit your playstyle needs using the SteelSeries Engine software. The default settings are prefect for my use. You have the typical left and right buttons and a scroll wheel (which also doubles as a center button). The button to control CPI (aka DPI ) is top center just behind the scroll wheel making for on the fly sensativity adjustments extremely easy. Which leaves two buttons on the left side to program as you wish. The mouse has onboard memory so it will keep up to 5 different setting if you switch between Windows laptop to Windows desktop to XBox or Mac.
If you are into LEDs then the SteelSeries Engine also provides control over the LEDs on the mouse. If you tandem with a SteelSeries keyboard with LEDs the software will control both.
A few things to be aware of...
- this is a right handed mouse due to side buttons only on the left side
- it is a USB mouse with 6' of cord
- it's lightweight so if you like a heavier mouse or one with adjustable weights you might want to look at other options.
I only have one operation issue. I have my mouse connected to a USB hub and on occasion when I boot up the mouse isn't recognized so I have to unplug and replug in the hub to get the mouse to connect. I had to connect directly to my PC to avoid this problem.

For the money its hard to beat.

The Victorinox Small Connex Frequent is made by the same company that has made Swiss Army Knives since 1897. So, you can be that it covers all the bases -- functionality, versatility, quality, and ergonomics. This upright spinner bag’s exterior offers a modern, streamlined look and is made with strong Makrolon polycarbonate. The spacious internal compartment allows optimized packing and is expandable to increase the capacity. There are x-shaped compression straps and zippered divider walls and pockets to help organize. When you close the bag and send it off, it can stay secure: a recessed Travel Sentry Approved combination lock allows TSA officers to access your bag. Its dimensions are 9.1 x 13.8 x 21.7 inches. And, when empty, it weighs 6.7 pounds.

Victorinox quality
on February 14, 2020
Posted by: Technopackrat
from KATY
I'm impressed! I have a Victorinox laptop bag that has served me well over the years. It's rugged and held up to a lot of abuse. I was particularly interested in this hard shell carry-on since.
Off the bat you can tell this is well made. Everything appears to be double stitched. The zippers are high quality. It is expandable in case you need to fit that last pair of jeans in for your trip. The handle extends without and play or slop. The 8 wheels on the 4 casters allow it to roll easily and straight (I've got a cheaper carry-on that won't track straight and tends to fight me). The compartment is lockable with a TSA approved locking mechanism.
The interior is a basic two compartment bag separated by a zippered divider. One compartment opened up or two separate... whatever works for your packing method. The divider has a few zippered pockets for quick stow of items. There is an X strap to secure the contents in case you need to compress them a bit. There is one mesh pocket in the base compartment that serves dual function... ditty bag or a stash compartment for a backup battery, more on that later.
There is a hidden ID tag that when pulled out reveals a very small utility tray with a bag lock reset tool and a very tiny ball point pen. Also when you pull it out it exposes a female USB port that is connected by a provided cable to the mesh bag in the base compartment. When you plug the inside end of the cable to your battery pack you have a pretty handy recharge port on the outside of your bag... perfect for those long waits at the gate waiting to board.
A few oddities. The supplied ball point pen is tiny and difficult to slide out of the utility tray. Not sure how useful it is if you can't extract it for use. Also, as part of that mesh bag that holds a battery pack it also has a spot for a Swiss Army knife (or at least that's the image shown on the pocket)... so that's not TSA friendly. I guess it would be a good stash pocket for a USB flash drive though.
All in all it is a high quality carry-on and I can whole heartedly recommend it.

Finally a keyboard I love!
on January 30, 2020
Posted by: Technopackrat
from KATY
I've been a big fan of Logitech devices for some time. In my opinion they are the premier PC accessory manufacturer as their product line caters to business to hard-core gamers. I have several G Series devices including keyboards, mice and headsets so I was anxious to get my hands on the new G513 Lightsync keyboard.
It feels amazingly rugged with the aluminum case. It is on the heavy side but I see that as a plus in conjunction with the soft rubber feet as it will stay put on your desktop while under serious use (also known as gaming). While the palmrest has memory foam and an easy cleaning soft cover it is separate from the keyboard. I remember seeing something where it states the pad is detatchable however there is no way to attach it to the keyboard (except possibly using duct tape on the bottom. I prefer an attached palmrest.
Depending on your typing or gaming style you can pick 3 available mechanical key types (brown, red or blue). I personally prefer red which gives me a really smooth keystroke but some prefer brown which give you a bit of a tactile feedback when pressing. The blue provides a stronger tactile feeling with a noticable click during the keystroke.

I love that the keyboard has a USB port on the backside which provides a convenient place to plug in a mouse using one less port on the computer itself.
Using the Logitech GHub software really makes the keyboard shine (literally and figuratively). The keyboard has 12 programmable function keys which you can program macros with the software. Also with GHub you can program the Lightsync RGB backlighting for any color or a couple of pre-programmed effects. Rainbow, breathing and static on or off are pretty standard but I really like being able to make the keyboard lighting triggered by music or even better... while in gaming mode the keyboard changes effect based on the game you are playing. For instance I play Division 2 and health or healing on items in the game gives you a green glow in the game but also the keyboard will glow green while healing.
My only gripe and it is a small one, is I prefer dedicated multi-media controls (dial for volume, buttons for start/stop or pause, fast forward or reverse). These functions exist but are part of the function keys and not dedicated. It just means I set the keyboard up with the function keys in function mode or in alternate mode. Not a deal breaker as there are way too many good things about this keyboard.
5 stars for me. I'll be using the heck out of this thing.

A good entry level aka budget gaming headset
on January 12, 2020
Posted by: Technopackrat
from KATY
These were recognized right away by my Windows 10 PC without the need to install any additional drivers or software however if you want to take advantage of the added features along with experiencing 7.1 surround sound you need to install Corsair's ICUE software. I'm a huge Corsair fan so I already had ICUE installed for my keyboard and mouse however I did have to update to the latest version so it would recognize the H45. Unfortunately that's where I experienced a big problem. Upon installation of the new version of ICUE my headset would drop and add frequently and add to the frustration I started getting the dreaded "Blue Screen of Death" (BSOD). I tried uninstalling the drivers and then uninstalled ICUE and got so frustrated I tossed the H45 back in the box from whence it came. I was running a DAC so I thought possibly that could be interfering with the headset so I uninstalled ICUE, uninstalled my DAC driver and software and then rebooted. Upon the reboot I reinstalled ICUE and then plugged in the headset and fortunately I have not had a BSOD since... fingers crossed. However I am a bit upset that I lost the use of my DAC.
Now that I played a few hours with the headset here are my observations:
- The HS45 headset is fairly lightweight however with the plastic they do have a cheap feel to them. They are also very plain looking with no frills.
- The sound is good considering the price point of under $50. Kicking it into 7.1 using ICUE added a better experience in FPS games as I could hear sounds behind me.
- The headset does have a 3.5mm stereo/mic plug that you can plug into any 3.5mm audio jack however ICUE with the provided 3.5mm to USB dongle does give you 7.1 surround sound and an equalizer to fine tune your output.
- Earcup padding is adequate but not near as comfortable as my higher priced headset. I wore for about 2 hours without any discomfort.
- The mic boom is removable which is a nice feature if you want them more as a plain headset
- On the left earcup there is a volume wheel and mic mute button. Controls are easy to get used to and placement is instinctive to reach.
I can easily see myself using these for video conferencing as well as gaming. I do wish that gaming headset manufacturers would start providing a carry bag at least so I can easily toss in in my gear bag.
All in all a great headset for the price, worth every penny!

Wet and Dry, sign me up
on December 16, 2019

In my home we have wall to wall ceramic tile flooring with a few area rugs. The primary reason is we are dog people and our dogs shed. My wife is always sweeping up dog hair and mopping up muddy paw prints. When I saw the Bissell Crosswave wet/dry vacuum I thought our prayers were answered. After a few weeks it's living up to expectations with a few caveats.
Out of the box it's a very handy cordless vacuum with decent enough battery life. It's extremely easy to assemble. We had it together and working on our never-ending dog hair drifts in no time. There are a few features that may be gimicky to some but also useful. The Crosswave has a companion app for Apple or Android that keeps track of charge, filter life, brush life and solution fill. You can also run through a cleaning cycle that helps flush waste from the roller. The app also has tutorials on how to get the most use out of the Crosswave. While the app isn't absolutely necessary it does help maintain the vacuum. The app is pretty easy to setup and it will walk you step by step through the system as it connects via wifi to the vacuum.
What I love...
- Wet dry feature great for hard floors
- Easily switches between hard floors and area rugs
- Does a great job of picking up pet hair
- Solution tank marked clearly to show water to cleaner ratio (small area or large area)
- comes with an extra roller so you can have one drying after cleaning cycle while using the other
Not so good but not a deal breaker...
- Head slightly narrower than most vacuums but I'm sure that's to help aid in wet applications
- My Lab's hair tends to clog near the collection canister, maybe it's the angle of the port in conjunction with the length of the hair
- Passive charging base takes up floor space - would prefer to charge and stow but you still need to find a place to stow the base. I guess you could shove the whole thing into a closet after charging. Prefer the other solutions of just plugging into a charging brick but the base is pretty much a necessary evil since it does aid in the cleaning cycle.
All in all I think we'll be using the Crosswave a lot, especiallly when the wet season comes around. Maybe I can talk my wife out of putting a beach towel by the back door now.
