Great long term value

HP makes some good stuff. I've got several laptops and printers made by them but I'm very put off by them forcing you to buy their expensive printer cartridges and toner cartridges. I do buy generic but that comes with a lot of trade offs. I do think the tank system is a much more economical solution. A set of ink refill bottles are only a bit over $60 and will yield about 8000 printed pages compared to a set of standard printer cartridges that can run a bit more and yield about 300 printed pages.
Setup was a breeze with a smartphone app. The app walks you through each step, helps you connect the printer to your wifi and instructs you on how to fill the ink reservoirs and install the print heads. I was up and running and connected to my wifi in about 15 minutes.
While I would have preferred a document feed scanner this scanner bed model will suit most of my needs. The app even instructs you during setup how to calibrate the scanner. Easy stuff.
The beauty of this printer is that you have a clear visual on how much ink you have in each of the reservoirs. You can easily judge when you need to purchase one or many of the ink refill bottles. Heck, the ink that comes with the printer fills each of the reservoirs unlike most cartridge printers being supplied with "sample" cartridges that will get you a fraction of printed pages as compared to the standard cartridges. I'm anxious to see how long in printer shelf life is on the tank ink/print heads.
Prints are of of very good quality, photos print crisp. This will be a good all around utility printer when I don't need my color laser.
I'm not sure about the price point of $399 for this printer though. It might be a better value a bit cheaper... maybe $50 to $100 off as there are plenty of cartridge all in one printers out there that are cheap enough to justify the cost of cartridges but I can see this as a good long term investment.

Top your Specialty brew with frothed milk for a coffeehouse-style drink. The frother is also removable for easy cleaning. Choose from one of four different brew styles; classic or rich for a traditional hot cup of coffee, over ice for an iced coffee that's never diluted, or specialty to make a cappuccino or latte. Clean function, dishwasher-safe parts, removable Ninja pod adaptor and frother allow you to easily deep clean your unit.

The best of both worlds? Almost!

My wife loves her half pot of brewed ground coffee every morning and I like the convenience of a pod brewer. So we have our pod machine next to our traditional coffee pot on the kitchen counter, taking up space that our old kitchen just can't spare. When we saw that Ninja came out with a dual brew system I had to check it out and I'm glad I did.
The controls are very simple and she loves that (she's not big on bells and whistles... she's happy to turn it on and push brew). It offers all the features of most standard coffee machines. It even comes with a whisk frother that hinges out from the left side. The whisk is easily removed for cleaning but honestly we don't froth much.
The insulated caraffe helps keep the fresh brewed coffee nice and hot long enough for my wife to finish her half pot. I do love that the water reservoir can be moved from the side to the back if you want to shove it in a counter corner where depth isn't an issue. For us we kept it on the side.
For me to use my K-cup pods I have to slide back the basket cover and drop in the pod module. The machine recognizes that it's either in standard brew mode or in pod mode so no special settings needed. Just dial up the size and press brew.
I will nit-pick a bit though. It should come with a reusable grounds basket instead of relying on #4 paper coffee filters. We did purchase an aftermarket basket but it's not a perfect fit as was our last Ninja basket. I had to remove the basket handle to get it to fit correctly. The other issue is what to do with the pod module when not in use. It would have been nice to have it stow on the machine itself but instead I it is loose and you need to find a cabinet or drawer to place it when not in use. Did I mention I have a small kitchen? Yeah it's a bit nit-picky and it does still brew good coffee. My wife is happy with the standard brew and I'll live with sticking the pod module into a cabinet when I'm not using it.
It does fit both standard brew and pod brew methods if that appeals to you. I'd recommend it!

GoPro does it again

I recently purchased a Jeep with the intention to do some overland camping and light offroad trail driving and I wanted a camera that would help me document those trips. I have several GoPro Hero Sessions that I picked up 4 years ago. They worked great but without a screen and having to rely on the phone app it was a bit trial and error for me but quality was always good. The Hero 10 is probably overkill for my needs but I'm sure if I spend more time with it I'll get more out of it.
The new Hero 10 is like the past few editions with dual displays. It has a rear touch screen to control the camera settings and a front preview screen if you are on the action side of the camera. So many options... from photo mode or time lapse or video, all easily accessible with a swipe of the finger on the touch screen. I like the way you can customize your standard settings on the GoPro main screen to fit your needs and using the GoPro Quik app makes it even easier. In video mode if you need a higher frame rate for fast moving action you can crank it up but you will need to crank down the resolution. If you need higher resolution just crank it up but crank down the frame rate. You can select resolution to 1080p, 2.7K, 4K or 5.3K with framerates at 24, 30, 60, 120 and 240 but remember as you up your resolution your framerates will need to decrease.
In Photo mode you can select between narrow, linear and wide field of view. You can also change the file format between JPG, RAW or even HDR. You can adjust the shutter delay to get yourself into the shot. There are several options for photos as well. You can switch between standard, burst and night mode.
I’ve used time-lapse mode in the past with my other GoPros to capture a string of photos on a long trip (Houston to LA). For me it captures the essence of the trip and I may supplement with stills and videos when I edit the footage into a movie. In time-lapse you can set resolution, lens, speed, interval and duration of the clips and save to your own custom default or quick select settings.
A big improvement to performance will be to make sure that you have a recommended high speed micro-SD card. Using the app you can edit and clip footage from your video or you can capture just a still with frame by frame control.
My only issues I’ve had with the Hero10 were the battery/microSD card compartment cover is extremely tight to ensure a waterproof seal and at first I found that I needed a key or coin to give me enough leverage to push it past the catch but it’s loosening up enough now that I can typically push it open with just my finger. It’s still tight but manageable now. The other issue I had was the camera was overheating and automatically shutting down. I did contact GoPro and they gave me some suggestions. The biggest issue for me was camera placement in my Jeep. I have a horizontal tubular bar on my dash with some RAM mounted items and I purchased a clamp mount for the GoPro. While it was off the dash it apparently was too close to the windshield with minimal air flow around it. I’ve since purchased another clamp mount with longer extension arm to see if that doesn’t fix the problem otherwise it’s back to suction cup mounts to the exterior of the body.
For a casual user you may not need to subscribe to the GoPro cloud services but you get a lot of extra flexibility and instant cloud storage (if you are in cellular range and your data plan allows).
GoPro hit another one out of the park. Flexibility and ease of use are key components their cameras and I can see myself adding this to my 3 other Hero Sessions for some awesome videos in the future.

Sony headphones
A few years ago I purchased the Sony WH-1000XM3 for myself as a Christmas gift. I needed a good pair of noise canceling Bluetooth headphones and my son-in-law swore by them.
Fast forward a few years, my son has commendiered my 1000XM3s so I was again in the market for a good pair of headphones to match my previous pair but I wasn't prepared to pay over $300 for the replacement.
Sony comes in with a sub $300 WH-XB910N with extra base priced at $249.99, a cool $100 less that the new 1000 series headphones. It fit the bill with active noise cancelling, Bluetooth and over the ear. I'm not a fan of on the ear headphones and can't wear them for any extended length of time. The build is similar to it's more expensive cousin but maybe a bit more plastic. Sony did not scrimp on the ear cups as they are soft and supple and very comfortable for extended wear. I also love that they fold up nicely and stow in the provided hard case (why don't more companies provide hard cases?).
The sound quality is good and the extra bass gives you a little added thump on the low end. Touch controls make it easy to stop, pause, start, adjust volume and also reverse and next. Additionally there is an ambient noise button which allows you to switch off noise cancelling so you can hear around you. Battery life is longer than I use in a day, actually more than several days, before I need to charge it again. I even like that they are Alexa and Google Assistant compatible, just be careful if your house is like mine and you have multiple devices that feature these assistants.
So, for how I use these headphones: I recently took a flight for a couple of hours and wore them the whole time, including while at the gate waiting for my flight to depart. I keyed up my favorite tunes and pressed plan and the headphones did a great job of cutting out the jet engine noise but when announcements came I could tap the ambient button and clearly hear the pilot or flight attendant. The other way I use this is I've got severe hearing loss in one ear and moderate loss in the other. In the evening when trying to watch TV with my wife I have to turn up the TV too loud for her so I can hear. I purchased a Bluetooth transmitter for the TV and I'm able to adjust the volume so I can hear dialog by using the touch control on the headphones. The noise cancelling comes in handy for this too as there is a slight delay with the Bluetooth transmitter so I get an echo effect without noise cancelling.
I couldn't ask for anything more from these headphones and I think they are a solid buy.

Misses the mark for me

Advertised as 15% smaller than an original XBox controller but I find the size difference is barely noticable as I lined up the Nacon controller with an original and the only difference I could tell was the compact was slightly shorter front to back.
As far as the feel in the hand, there is a little more contour with the grip making it a bit more comfortable to hold but when pressing the buttons the click is somewhat hollow sounding and the tactile feeling isn't the same pronounced as with the original making it feel cheap. In addition the triggers are not as pronounced as the original. There is a 2.5mm jack which supports a XBox compatible headset or even wired earbuds for that matter.
I do like that you can install an app from the Windows store to be able to configure profiles for use with PC games. But my biggest disappointment is the cable. While it does have the quick disconnect to prevent tripping hazards the cord is extremely stiff.
So in closing it’s okay but there are better out there. If you have smaller hands then the compactness might appeal to you but honestly with it in your hands you won’t notice much difference between a full sized controller. Price point makes it a decent alternative to other wired controllers.
I give it 3 stars mainly because of the buttons and the cable.

Great budget headset... formerly Plantronics
on September 15, 2021
Posted by: Technopackrat
from KATY, TX
The headset has a comfortable fit with the earcups adequately padded. To get a proper fit for my fat head I had to move the pivot head on the earcup to the largest span slot on the bridge. The bridge has a floating pad that helps with a proper fit. To insure proper fit the headset has 3 adjustment positions where the earcups snap out and back in. It comes in the center position but it is easy enough to snap out and back into an adjacent slot.
The cord is pretty short making it necessary to plug into the controller. However it is okay for handheld units with headphone jacks such as Switch, Steam Deck and most tablets. Speaking of the cord, it's a rubberized and flat and has a convenient slide adjustment for volume. I'm really not a big fan of the flat rubber used. I would have preferred a cloth braided round cable that would easily slide against clothing or skin although I do have a headset for PC games that has a coarse braid and I pick up noise through the cord to the headset when it slides against my clothing... so maybe the flat rubber cable might not be a bad idea but more play time might change my mind.
The mic boom snaps into place but make sure that it snaps in securely or it will dislodge and fall out. The boom pivots up out of the way which also mutes the mic. It also is a good length and is bendable to get the best placement in front of your mouth. Some are fixed and end up bumping into my cheek… not these.
The sound is good and Dolby Atmos is integrated although I don’t see a significant improvement with the experience.
All said at the price point these are a great add for the XBox or any handheld gaming device with 2.5mm headphone jack.

The best earbuds you never heard of
on September 15, 2021

from KATY, TX
I never heard of Devialet before but I know them now. Their Gemini earbuds are outstanding!
The fit is comfortable as they come with 4 sizes of eartips so you can pick the ones that fit your ears most comfortably. Once I paired with my phone and started playing tunes I became completely impressed by the amazing sound quality!
The Gemini work great straight out of the box however to get the most out of them download the Devialet smartphone app which adds a lot of fine tuning capability. They have apps for Apple iOS and Android that you can download from their respective stores.
The level of active noise cancelling is app adjustable so that you can dial in the level of ambient noise that you desire. In an office environment I like a little noise cancelling but I also like to hear a bit of ambient noise just so I have a feeling of what's going on around me. So, in the app I set for low noise cancelling and I get the best of both environments.
There are preset equalizer settings but you can also custom tune for your taste. The typical graph representation with sliders makes adjustment super easy.
It's also an expected feature that these earbuds have voice capability so you can use during phone calls on your paired smartphone but also able to have one touch voice control with either Siri or Google Assistant. They also have basic controls for volume, muting, pause and play, and next and last song. I especially like the auto pause feature that will pause songs when you pull the buds out of your ear.
The case is a rechargable charging dock boasting 24 hours of autonomy allowing up to 6 hours of playtime on a single charge. While traveling and the earbuds get low on juice just toss them back into the case for a quick recharge and at the end of the day plug the case into a power source using the included USB-C cable or toss onto a Qi compatible wireless charging base (note that a charging brick is not included which seems to be the new trend which while I understand why but if you need one you need to purchase separately).
So the elephant in the room is are they worth the $300. Well... I'd put these up against Sony and Bose high end wireless noise earbuds in quality so the value is there.
By the way... the Devialet Phantom speakers look amazing and hopefully sound as good as they look but well over my audio equipment budget!!

Good budget gaming mouse

Arozzi Favo Ultra Light Mouse is a feature rich budget gaming mouse weighing in at 74 grams. Super lightweight and agile. Feels great in the hand. Easy plug and play but to get access to all of the features you need to download the Windows software from the Arozzi website. The software includes easy macro programming, settings for sensitivity, polling speed, scrolling speed and double-click speed. All settings can be saved to unique profiles so you can save settings for each type of game you play.
It's a typical 6 button programmable scroll mouse. Changing DPI on the fly is easy with a click of a button. They market it as a 7 button but in reality the 7th button is strictly for RGB on the bottom of the mouse. Technically is it a button? Yes... but... really?
Nice RGB lighting... not too in your face. Unfortunately the lighting is preset selections and not programmable. It would be great if the lighting was compatible with other 3rd party lighting apps. Also I'm not a big fan of the RGB lighting switch on the bottom of the mouse but at least you can change it on the fly without the software.
At a sub $50 pricetag it's a steal of a deal. Easily a few bucks cheaper than comparable mice.
I have only one complaint. The "braided" cable is a braided sleeved cable. While the nylon sleeving offers less resistance than a rubber insulated cable it's just a sleeve and tends to bunch at the end a bit. But that's my only complaint.

WD Black FTW

Talk about breathing new life into a older computer!!!! I have a Intel NUC Skull Canyon bare bones computer that originally stuffed with a PCIe gen 2 M.2 drive and it rocked along okay but as technology improved it was slow in comparison to some laptops that I dropped PCIe gen 3 SSDs in.
I was able to get my hands on the Western Digital WD_Black SN850 gen 4 drive to see if I could crank up the speed some. Installation was easy peasy! Pulled the bottom cover off the NUC and dropped the new SSD into the spare M.2 slot.
I downloaded Acronis Image for Western Digital software from the Western Digital website. It was a simple extract and install. Once I launched the software it recognized the new WD hard drive and automatically provided a before and after configuration to verify that the correct drive was being cloned and the correct target was selected. Hit start and about 15 minutes later the old drive was successfully cloned. I planned on using the older drive for data storage so I left it in the NUC, launched Command Prompt with Admin rights and did a few partition removal commands to get the old drive scrubbed of all of the Windows created partition, formated it and got it ready for data.
While I didn't run read/write tests to see how much faster the new drive was boot up was a bit faster and the NUC seems more snappy. I've resurrected several older laptops by dropping in 2.5" SSDs in place of the older mechanical hard drives and the difference is amazing. Switching from one SSD to another faster one did see some improvement but not as dramatic as HDD to SSD swaps but still worth it as drive costs drop.
All in all I'm extremely happy with the new drive and most likely I'll yank it out of the NUC and install it in my next PC build. You can't go wrong with Western Digital and their line of SSDs. Very reliable and "knock on wood" I haven't had a drive failure in years.
I highly recommend all Western Digital drives and especially their M.2 line that keeps getting better and better.

Great for noisy office environments
on July 23, 2021
Posted by: Technopackrat
from KATY, TX
I work in a noisy environment where many people have daily calls with our partners overseas. With all of the discussions it can be extremely hard not to get some bleed over and missed dialog. That's why I was excited to try Logitech's Zone 750 noise cancelling on the ear headset.
The fit is firm enough to stay in place during lengthy calls but not so tight that they are uncomfortable. The padded earcups provide a decent amount of comfort and do provide a good bit of noise isolation. I do love that the boom will mute the mic when in the raised position (parallel with the band and not in front of the mouth) making it a very intuitive motion to mute a call. While there is a mute button on the inline control I find the sweep up mute more to my liking.
The audio from the headset is crystal clear and the noise cancelling works wonders on ambient noise. I've got some hearing loss so the clarity is very welcome to my ears. The people I talk with report that there is little or no background noise coming through on their end and it is crystal clear as well.
I like the included soft carrying bag, making it easy to toss into my backpack when I have to commute to the office. I also like that the native connection is USB-C but also comes with a USB-C to USB-A adapter (which stows neatly in a little pouch in the carrying bag.
While the price is a bit steeper than a lot of other headsets you still get a lot of value with noise cancelling features, comfort and included carrying bag.

The volume can be ramped up pretty high and the quality is decent. I wouldn't use it to stream music without headphones or external speakers but for game playing it is great.

I need to replace cable box for tv watching with Comcast subscription service original cable box no longer works

NO, this is a HDMI selector switch which allows you to select between 4 devices (such as game consoles, blu-ray or DVD player, PC, etc) to a single HDMI input on a TV (or projector for that matter). It DOES NOT provide any content. This IS NOT a cable box replacement. I suggest you contact Comcast to get a replacement set top box.

How is this laptop VR ready? The oculus rift requires the minimum to be the 1050ti and htc vive requires a gtx 970 or higher. The amd websites says nothing about this being VR capable.

Not sure but I seriously doubt it at the price point.
