Not just for movies

On occasion I have organized yearly planning meeting lock-ins with Boy Scouts. We'll show up on a Friday evening, order pizzas, run through the next year's program planning and then break out ice cream, gaming consoles, board games, guitars, you name it, whatever the kids like to share. So the evening typically starts off with planning slide presentations from a laptop and then, when business is done, they shift to video console games and eventually in the wee hours of the morning and the pizza coma starts we'll fire up a movie and the kids will grab some popcorn and chill, eventually drift off for a quick nap before sunrise.
I needed a projector that could handle just about anything I throw at it. The Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 760HD is a 720p high definition projector supporting both 4:3 and 16:9 picture formats making it suitable for a great all purpose tool. With 3300 lumen output with a 15000:1 dynamic contrast the picture was bright and crisp. We watched Rogue One with the picture at least 120" diagonal and the 720p picture was crystal clear with high definition. Epson claims up to 300" with 720p resolution but due to space limitations I was unable to verify.
There are 3 different video input ports: Composite, VGA and HDMI so you should be able to connect just about anything, even older consoles. It will even support streaming devices like the nVidia Shield TV, Apple TV, Chromecast.
It has the typical adjustment features like front height adjustment, focus, zoom, slider keystone adustment and sliding lense cover (black out). But it does have Quick Corner which allows you to adjust each corner of the image separately to fine tune the image.
A few features on my wish list but would probably bump the price point: Bluetooth (especially for audio) and direct casting from tablets or smartphones.

Pros:
+Decent price point for feature set
+Bright image
+Easy to use
+Multiple input formats
+Built in speaker (with caveat, see cons)
+Size and weight are acceptable (not bulky and heavy)
Cons:
-Does not come with a carrying bag or case. An optional soft case is available from Epson but I'd go with a third party hard case with internal foam padding, like Pelican.
-Video cables are not provided with the projector so be prepared.
-While the speaker does an okay job it will not fill a room and not give you that immersive sound that are desired for action movies or video games. It would greatly benefit from either an audio jack to plug in external speakers or Bluetooth.

Warming up!
on September 25, 2017

Let me start off saying that I'm a huge Bose fan! Maybe obsessed is more like it. I've got several Bose products ranging from a home theater soundbar to noice cancelling earbuds.
At first I didn't care too much for the Soundwear speakers. The horse collar style takes a while to get used to and looks a bit ackward. Actually on first sight they reminded me of the short lived and long gone (and this is aging me) Bone Fones. My initial judgement was they were too heavy, too bulky and too loud to use at work as a headphone replacement. While at home I felt like the speaker placement did not result in the best quality sound until I held the speakers up a bit closer to my ears. However, using them for a few hours at work I am warming up to them quickly. I can turn the volume down on my connected device so that it's just bearly audible from a few feet away but I still experience the rich Bose sound eminating from them. In the past I'd use earbuds or headphones and people would have to tap me on the shoulder to get my attention. With the Soundwear not covering the ears it's much more conducive to my work environment.
Bluetooth pairing was extremely easy. Just put the Soundwear into Bluetooth discover mode and then scan for bluetooth devices on your smartphone or tablet. Don't forget to download the Bose Connect app for your iOS or Android device. The app allows you to make some adjustments like Bass, setting phone call alerts, and auto off timer to name the more important adjustments.
Is the Soundwear a headphone replacement? That depends. They obviously don't do noise canceling but if that isn't a concern then yes, these are a great headphone replacement.
Is the Soundwear a workout headphone/earbud replacement? That depends. If you doing stationary exercise like a cycle trainer or eliptical then yes. If you are running, weight training, yoga or any other exercise that requires a lot of upper torso movement then no, earbuds would be your best bet.
All in all the Soundwear speakers fit a great niche where you want to enjoy music or podcasts or audio books without having to wear earphones or earbuds. Since they don't cover or plug the ears they allow communication with others around you without having to unplug.
The more I use the Soundwear the more I love them. I'm still debating whether these are another grand slam homerun by Bose or a single homerun. Time will tell for me anyway.
Pros:
great Bose sound
don't cover ears
Bluetooth
changeable covers (optional purchase)
Cons:
a bit bulky in comparison to headphones or earbuds
horse collar design takes some getting use to
price point, but Bose is never cheap

Lots to Like!

My wife told me we didn't need a new vacuum but I frequent car shows so I'm always on the lookout for a battery powered vacuum to do those last minute touch-ups on my car. So I jumped on the new Shark IONFlex DuoClean when I saw it recently on an infomercial. While not usually relying on infomercials to make purchase decisions the features on this vacuum did appear to be perfect for quick room clean-ups and a portable enough cordless with enough power to take care auto carpet and upholstery when I hit the car shows.

Assembly was easy. Just snap the power unit to the articulated exension wand and then snap the power brush head unit onto the other end of the wand and slap in the battery pack and you are ready to go. The wand is lightweight aluminum so the unit won't be too heavy when you are cleaning drapes, shelves or even ceiling fans. The vacuum also comes with 4 attachments that slip either on the power unit or on the extension wand and a battery charger.
The articulated wand helps with getting under furniture or those hard to reach places without having to push stuff around. It also helps with storage of the vacuum when you are done with it. Just press the wand joint lock and it folds down to almost half its full height.
While glancing through the instructions I didn't see clearly how to open the dust bin. Unfortunately for me it popped open and a bin full of dirt and dog hair ended up on the floor. Maybe instructions could be more clear on how to open the bin and I would test open the bin before you vacuum to prevent a spill. Everything else was pretty straight forward making this an easy to use vacuum almost right out of the box.
I would highly recommend purchasing the optional battery charging cradle and extra battery pack to help ease the frustration of a battery dieing before you are done cleaning.
Pros:
+Cordless
+Bagless
+Lightweight
+Removable battery pack
+Decent battery life
+Articulated wand
+Powered brush head
+Fairly compact storage
Cons:
-Somewhat clumsy dust bin emptying (for me anyway... just the first time though)
-Sure wish the second battery with cradle was standard
-Price is a touch on the high side

Dynamite comes in a small packages

It seems the latest fad in notebook computers is the 2-in-1 configuration. A touchscreen notebook that doubles as a tablet (albeit heavy tablet compared to a real tablet). Samsung has jumped on the bandwagon with an impressive offering with the Notebook 9 Pro 13.3" 2-in-1. This unit replaces my older Samsung Series 9 ultralight laptop.
Setup was extremely easy using Cortana. From first boot to desktop was as simple as verbally answering questions and the computer responded appropriately. An added bonus was setting up login by facial recognition. Cortana even helps with that. In minutes, I was greeted with Windows 10 desktop.
The notebook is quick and robust thanks to the i7-7500U CPU, 8GB of ram and a 256GB SSD, although I would have liked it better if it had a 500GB SSD. The back-lit keyboard has one of the better tactile feels I've experienced on most notebooks. A tablet pen (rubber tip not ink) is snugly in place just under the wrist rest. In tablet mode, it is a welcome addition. I was extremely surprised by the quality and volume of the sound coming from the internal speakers as most notebooks have disappointed me.

Some brands are moving to all USB ports being Type C but I was pleased to see the 2 USB 3.0 ports along with 1 USB-C port. My last notebook had all Type C ports and no 3.0 or 2.0 ports so I had to purchase dongles so I could use an external mouse or USB flash drive.
Another issue on other notebooks is the video out port is usually a mini-HDMI where on this Samsung Notebook 9 Pro there is a full-sized HDMI port. I was impressed by the 13.3” display with 1920 x 1080 screen resolution, powered by an Intel HD 620 built in graphics GPU.
For all the great things, there are a few things that I would have liked to see different:
• Instead of a full-sized SD card reader it only has a microSD card reader. If you have a camera or other device that uses regular SD cards you will need to purchase an external card reader.
• I would have also liked an option to get the notebook with at least a 500GB SSD.
• Placement of the power switch is extremely close to the microSD slot. I can see the power switch getting accidentally pressed.
• There is no network port. You must rely on the WiFi only or purchase a USB LAN adapter.
At just under 3 lbs the Samsung Notebook 9 Pro is a solid road warrior performer but it does come at a price. It's not a bargain priced unit but with the performance and screen resolution the value is still there. You get what you pay for and in this case, it's worth every penny.

Great Counter Top Grill
on July 31, 2017
Posted by: Technopackrat
If you are looking for something to replace the old school countertop clamshell grill look no further than the Phillips Avance Collection Indoor Grill.
It's large enough to cook 4 decent size steaks or 6 to 8 hamburgers. The grill surface is removable as is the drip tray and both are dishwasher friendly.
We fired it up and threw on a few steaks and it did a great job of cooking them to perfection, complete with the obligatory grill marks. Next up we'll try chicken and vegetables but are expecting great results as well.
The pros:
+ this is a big grill
+ heats up quick
+ virtually smokeless
+ over 1600W of infrared heat
+ easy to clean drip pan and grill
The cons:
- this is a big grill (counter space is a premium at my house)
- the infrared heating elements are extremely bright red making it difficult to look at the grill while on
- I would have liked to see several heat settings. It's either off, on, or on warm. Maybe warm, medium, high.
- price is a bit on the high side but cheaper than a large outdoor gas grill.
All in all a great grill!

Killer sound!
on June 26, 2017
Posted by: Technopackrat
This thing is a monster, both in size and sound! Samsung packed a lot of power in this soundbar.
Setup is really easy. I have a shelf just above the TV in my man cave and while it hogs most of the shelf it's got an attractive finish and matches well to my Samsung 55" 4K TV. There are mulitple ways to connect to the soundbar.
- HDMI pass through in and out ports
- Auxiliary jack
- Digital optical
- Wireless via Bluetooth or Wifi
There is a LED display on the right side letting you know what the source is, volume level and bass level.
There are 9 speakers in 3 channels without an external subwoofer. It has destortion reduction technology that fills the room with plenty of bass without the rattle and does it without the subwoofer.
The remote is very simple following the lead of the Samsung smartTV remotes. A slim device that has a power button, settings button, source button, directional wheel with play/pause center button, surround button, sound mode button, smarte mode button and volumne and bass rocker switches. Very easy to use!
Download the Samsung Multiroom app (either iOS or Android), bluetooth connect your smartphone and the soundbar becomes a media center allowing you to stream music from any streaming service that you have a subscription to or music on your smartphone.
In the box along with the soundbar and remote is the power cord, an optical cable, wall mount brackets (drill template included), holder feet and a cable management clamp.
Not that you need it but if you add the optional rear wireless speaker kit you can enhance the sound to be even more emersive.
This is displacing a Bose Solo 5 as my preferred sound system in my man cave. I'm that impressed.

What I would expect from Audio-Technica
on May 24, 2017
Posted by: Technopackrat
I love my music! I listen at home, at work, in the car, where ever I go. I've a few sets of high quality headphones but they are all missing one key thing. Bluetooth! Especially since the iPhone 7 dropped the built in headphone jack and you have to use a dongle to plug in it was only a matter of time for me to get a pair of Bluetooth headphones.
Up steps Audio-Technica with their latest offering the ATH-SR6BT wireless over the ear folding headphones. I've got some earbuds, and a few on the ear headphones but really needed a good over the ear set. I couldn't wait to get the box open when it was finally delivered. Not only do they have a stunning look but the sound is incredible. The build is solid and not flimsy. The padding (on top and on the ear cups) is soft and comfortable and the ear cups adjust up and down so you can fit it to your head.
In the box you get the headphones, an USB charging cable, a soft carrying bag and just in case you don't have a Bluetooth device or prefer to use a jack they have you covered with that including a detachable headphone cable. The detachable cable does have a limited control button but also includes a microphone.
The controls are pretty straight forward although it took me a while to get used to the playback and volume button, more on that later. It was easy to set up. On the right ear cup there is only a simple on/off switch doubles as a pairing button. Oddly the multi-function battery life/charging indication/BT pairing light is on the left ear cup which is counter-intuitive, at least for me. I'd power on and look for the light near the switch... oops... not there. Also on the left ear cup is the USB charging port, the detachable cable jack and a multi-function button. My iPhone quickly discovered the headphones and I was ready to go.
I did have problems at first getting use to the multi-function button. You press it straight down to start and stop playback or to pickup or hangup a phone call. Unfortunately I can't find a mic anywhere on the headphone itself so you will need to use the detachable cable with mic or speak directly into the phone but if you are using the detachable cable it has a pickup and answer switch as well... things that make you go HMMMMM! Now the part that tripped me up (but I am getting used to it). Press the switch up and volume increases... but if you hold it too long it goes to the next track... frustrating! Press the switch downward and the volume decreases... but if you hold it too long it rewinds... also frustrating! The good news is that after some practice you'll figure out that it's a difference between tapping the switch in one direction or the other or sliding and holding in one direction or the other. Also it would have been nice to have a hard case for these since they are not cheap headphones and might suffer some damage if tossed into a backpack.
I haven't had them long enough to test battery life but they do have an automatic power off after 5 minutes not being connected.
I'm extremely impressed by the quality of the sound. Good rich tones. However, with some music I do like a bit more punch so a bass boost would have been a welcome add but I can always use the equalizer setting on the phone.
Footnote... I missed the fact that it also has NFC connectivity if your smartphone supports that feature.
So, would I recommend these to friends... heck yeah! Plenty to love about these and worth every dollar!
Pros -
+ quality build and style
+ somewhat folding
+ comfortable to wear
+ sound is clear and crisp
+ price point for the features
Cons -
- light on wrong cup (as far as I'm concerned)
- headphones don't have a mic built in and must use detachable cable
- multi-function buttons can be confusing (at first)
- no bass boost
- no hard case

Replace the keyboard of your Microsoft Surface Pro 7, 6, 5 or 4 with this silver Brydge keyboard. Bravo Brydge!
on May 19, 2017
Posted by: Technopackrat
I purchased my Microsoft Surface Pro 3 a couple of years ago and also picked up the pricey keyboard. While the Microsoft SP3 keyboard is convenient I didn't care too much for the flex while typing.
When the Brydge 12.3 keyboard for the Surface Pro 3 & 4 became available I was extremely interested in an upgrade. The Brydge keyboard's aluminum case has a solid feel. The back-lit keys have sufficient tactile feedback and travel to make typing much more pleasant than the Microsoft Surface Pro keyboard. Four rubber feet on the bottom of the keyboard keep it secure in place while typing. The hinge mechanism has rubber spacers that snugly hold the Surface Pro to the keyboard without fear of the two accidentally coming apart. Out of the box the spacers are for a slightly thinner Surface Pro 4 but they do include the silicone spacers for a Surface Pro 3. Swapping was easy but make sure you have everything installed completely. I did have minor issues sliding the Surface Pro into the hinges but that was due to operator error while installing the spacers. Once positioned properly the Surface Pro and Brydge keyboard looked like it a solid laptop. With the Surface Pro up and ready for use the keyboard hinge gives you a slight angle and has silicone feet (actually part of the spacer) that provide non-slip grip while typing. Setup was a fast and easy Bluetooth connection. Brydge also offers the same keyboard with 128GB of memory to provide additional storage for your Surface Pro.
For that solid feeling you do pay for it in weight as it is on the heavy side coming in at almost 3 lbs. Most of that weight comes from it's on-board battery which is charged through a micro-USB port.
Personally I love this keyboard. While not as thin and lightweight as the Microsoft keyboard it does add stability, no flex and great key response. I've had a few Bluetooth keyboards but none are as solid or integrate easily to the Surface Pro. I having to deal with a stand-alone keyboard for tablets. They only thing I might have done different is add a way to tether the Surface Pro to the keyboard to use the keyboard's battery for emergency power for the tablet if needed (maybe a short cable with Surface Pro charging tip).
Brydge keyboards are also available for the iPad Pro 12.9" and 9.7", the new 9.7" iPad, the iPad Air 2, the iPad Air and the iPad Mini 4. I'm definitely picking one up for my 9.7" iPad. All are comparably priced to other alternatives making these a better solution if you don't mind the weight.
Pros:
+ solid feel
+ looks integrated with the Surface Pro
+ great key response
+ back-lit keys
+ comparable pricing
Cons:
- relatively heavy
- must remember to charge it
- hinges are not 360° so you must remove Surface Pro from keyboard if you want to use it as a tablet

Add stability to your home network with the Amped Wireless HELIOS-EX Wi-Fi Extender. With DirectLink technology, it avoids signal loss by adding another 5GHz Wi-Fi channel to the standard setup, which it then uses strictly for receiving signal from the source. This Amped Wireless HELIOS-EX Wi-Fi Extender covers an area of up to 12,000 sq. ft. and includes four Gigabit network ports.

Great coverage
on May 8, 2017
Posted by: Technopackrat
In my home we are pretty connected. Between game consoles, smart TVs, video streaming devices, tablets, phones, laptops and computers bandwidth can sometimes be an issue as well. I was anxious to see if the tri-band extender would help. With the tri-band you get one 5gHz band known as their "Directlink" to the router and then 2.4gHz and 5gHz bands for device connectivity. My home is rougly 1800 sq ft and single story so getting wi-fi coverage from one end of the house is usually not a big problem but there is some signal loss in the far back corner of the master bedroom. It wasn't a huge problem as we usually could get a medium strength signal however I picked up the Amped Wireless AC2200 Wi-Fi Range Extender hoping that it will help fill the gap and provide a stronger signal in the far corners. Amped states that the extender can cover 12,000 sq ft of space so I'm far from testing the limits of what it can do.
Setup was super simple. Plug it in to the supplied power adapter, point your tablet, smartphone or wireles device connected to your wi-fi router to the web setup address and then scan for your home network to extend. Once connected to your home network wi-fi router you can simply clone your router's 2.4gHz and 5.0gHz bands. You then have the ability to set some options like SSID, passwords, guest accounts are amount the many.
While the price may be a bit high for an extender it's feature rich and does a great job of getting your wi-fi coverage a full bars through the entire house. Well worth the money if you have a lot of wi-fi connected devices and a large area to cover.

Soundlink Revolve Cradle
on April 10, 2017
Posted by: Technopackrat
The optional charging cradle for the Soundlink Revolve adds convenience to charging by setting the Revolve on the cradle rather than plugging in the speaker directly through a micro USB connection. I would suggest taking care when setting the Revolve on the cradle as I apparently accidentally touched the wrong contacts between the speaker and cradle and the speaker started emitting a loud hum that I had to power off the speaker to get it to stop. Other than that everything works perfectly and worth the convenience.

Are the rechargeable batteries removable?

There is no battery hatch and no screws to remove a backplate so it would be safe to say they are not replaceable.

How are the speakers on this laptop, in terms of sound quality and volume?

The volume can be ramped up pretty high and the quality is decent. I wouldn't use it to stream music without headphones or external speakers but for game playing it is great.

I need to replace cable box for tv watching with Comcast subscription service original cable box no longer works

NO, this is a HDMI selector switch which allows you to select between 4 devices (such as game consoles, blu-ray or DVD player, PC, etc) to a single HDMI input on a TV (or projector for that matter). It DOES NOT provide any content. This IS NOT a cable box replacement. I suggest you contact Comcast to get a replacement set top box.

How is this laptop VR ready? The oculus rift requires the minimum to be the 1050ti and htc vive requires a gtx 970 or higher. The amd websites says nothing about this being VR capable.

Not sure but I seriously doubt it at the price point.
