Good basic set for primary or secondary viewing

I decided I needed a TV in the garage so, my 9 year old 42" Dynex plasma got moved there, and this Toshiba replaced it in my secondary basement system. Installation and set-up was quick and obvious. Extremely light weight, easy to handle. I have no need for a Smart TV, as I have BluRay and Roku players loaded with internet access apps already. This is my first larger-screen NON-plasma, so, I'm getting used to the less snappy picture common to this and most LED/LCD sets. I always use my surround system for audio, so I can't comment on the set's internal speaker sound quality. People think it was goofy to buy this 1080P display, versus a 4K variation. Well, Dish TV, Direct TV, local broadcasters, most cable systems, and online streamers like Netflix, are lucky to be providing a 720P picture, yet alone the 1080P this set is capable of. True universal, consistent 4K picture sources are 5 years away, if we are lucky, so this affordable name-brand set is capable of more than most of us need. This set's picture should satisfy 90%+ of today's viewers looking for a 49" screen.

Entry-level Polk sound at a stupid low price
on April 14, 2017

Polk is one of those admirable companies that sells both high-end speakers that cost as much as a nice used car, and, a reputable basic speaker like this for the mere price of a couple tanks of gasoline. Like the doctor's Hippocratic oath, these speakers "first do no harm" and likely will be an upgrade to 90% of the speakers sold with "compact" or "mini" audio/video systems in the last 15 years. These are frequently on sale for $200 a PAIR, a ridiculously low price for a speaker this size, volume, and quality in 2017. And the don't need a huge wattage amp to get good sound and bass from these. Your audio nut friend who spends $2,000+ on a speaker won't love these, but, he/she will still respect them for the sound they make at such a low price. ...and that same audio nut might even buy a pair for their secondary system, office system, etc. Whatever minor audio offenses these might create under super-critical listening conditions is negated by bargain price. You can't touch these without spending 2-3 times this price.

One of the last multi-disc CD changers & a good 1!

Even in this day of downloads, streaming audio, and "vinyl revival," music on CD is still the leading selling format. But just try to find a CD player, yet alone a multi-disc CD player. This Onkyo, and a much pricier Yamaha player, are all that is left as multi0disc players here in early 2017. Yes, you can play CDs on your DVD player or computer CD drive, but, those chintzy units are so slow to respond, have virtually no front panel displays, and none are multi-disc. This Onkyo model has been around for years, and I hope they just keep making them forever. For less than $150, you can't beat both the sound quality and quick/smooth operation of this machine. It has yet to skip or reject and CD I have put in it. The remote is tiny but full-featured and you get quickly accustomed to the small size. Front panel controls are logical and user-friendly, which can't be said of the last of the Sony multi-disc players that were absolutely maddening. Get one before some dumb bean-counter in Japan decides to discontinue this gem.

Enjoy wireless music playback from smartphones or other mobile devices with this Yamaha Hi-Fi stereo receiver. It has a handy speaker selector for switching between the sound output terminals, and it uses Bluetooth for wireless connectivity. A power management feature on this Yamaha stereo receiver shuts it down automatically when the receiver is not being used.

Excellent basic 2 channel stereo receiver.
on April 14, 2017

Verified Purchase:Yes
Glad to see somebody still makes a simple solid clean and powerful 2 channel stereo amp for audio listening without all the clutter and confusion of a home theater receiver. Plenty of inputs, logical operation, dead-quiet noise floor, basic but responsive remote control. About the only thing it lacks is a built-in phono pre-amp to directly plug-in a turntable here in this era of "vinyl revival." Then again, many newer turntables have a built-in phono pre-amp, or you can buy one to plug into this Yamaha for as little as $25. All told, for less than $150, you get a modern version of the classic stereo receiver that ruled home audio systems from the 60's thru 90's.

Great replacement for Motorola modem from TWC
on September 17, 2016
Posted by: Bill
Verified Purchase:Yes
This is a simple plug&play replacement for the similar Motorola model issued by Time Warner Cable. A while back they started charging $10/month to rent a modem....this was $70 to purchase and use for years without rental fees, and looks very similar and works the same. Works just as well. Doesn't have the multiple Ethernet jacks on the back, but, these days, you really only need one for your wireless router. The body is glaring hospital white, and, speaking pf glare, the operating blinking lights are very bright and distracting in a dark room. If you are with Time Warner Cable, you will need to make a free call to them to authorize this new modem, mine took about 20 minutes. As part of that set-up, you will need to make a WIRED connection to this modem from your computer, NOT using the wireless router in your house. Once the computer, modem, and the person on the phone are all connected, you can then hang-up and reconnect your wireless router to this new modem. It may take an hour or two for your wireless router to "learn" the language of this new modem but they will eventually "get along" just fine.

For less than $200, all it does is work just fine

Hard to believe a new name brand Windows 10 laptop PC with 15+" screen and 500 gb hard drive can be purchased for less than $200 on sale. A utilitarian basic black box....thin, light, quick to start and quick to respond. Keyboard is a little chintzy so probably not for typing purists wring their autobiography, but for web-browsing and email, might as well buy a couple and scatter them around your house. If this is your first experience with Windows 10, you will be able to work it immediately and it will take 3-5 days to become second nature. I have found some older websites still haven't updated to Windows 10 compatibility, so, don't disconnect your old PC completely just yet.

PIC SHOWS 3 6.5" passive radiators BUT DESCRIPTION SAYS 2

Which is correct, the description or the picture?
These speakers have three identical LOOKING 6.5" speakers. BUT only the top one is the actual the woofer, the other two are the "passive radiators." They basically create additional bass notes from sonic energy that reflects inside the speaker box from the top woofer. Sounds like voodoo, but when done right you get extra bass at a low cost and no need for bigger amp power. These speakers get it right. Other speakers often utilize "ports" to put this wasted woofer energy to use. Polk chose not to use ports, and instead use passive radiators on this model....and it works nicely.

Hi, I need to replace the two rear side speakers in my 7.1 sound system. Will these work for that purpose?

yes, these can be used as surround/rear speakers. Their proportions mean they are designed to sit on the floor, but, if you have space to do that, they will likely sound as good or better than most "surround" speakers that are smaller and designed for wall or shelf placement....and these smaller speakers are often lacking in bass. With more and more bass being recorded in the surround channels of movies and TV shows, I say you can't go wrong with the largest speaker you can fit into the rear speaker location, provided it is of good quality. These are a steal for the price, and, require very little amp power for clean sound.

Can I mix 6 ohm speakers with 8 ohm equipment ?

Yes, you should not have any issues intermixing speakers rated 6 ohm and 8 ohm. You only get into trouble with wide variations, like 4 ohm and 16 ohm intermixing. Generally, the ohm rating on a speaker describes it's efficiency, in other words, how much power it takes from an amp to power the speaker. 16 ohm speakers are the most efficient, and were common back 50+ years ago when amps had less power. Some costly high-end speakers are 4 ohm and require beefy amps to sound right. I can personally attest these speakers are very efficient and produce a lot of volume and good bass with very modest amps.

Can I plug speakers into the headphone jack and play CD's?

No this CD player does not have a headphone jack. Some do, this one doesn't. You hook this up to your audio system, and the system's amplifier/receiver should have a front panel headphone jack.

I have an old Pioneer CD player that has stopped working. Will the Pioneer 6-cd magazines work with this unit? Thanks for any help.

No, this is a totally different and simpler way to play multiple CDs. No need for those clumsy CD magazines from your old Pioneer. This machine has a front panel tray that slides out and there are 6 numbered round slots to place your 6 CDs. Then push play and enjoy. The remote control, or front panel controls, let you select which CDs and songs you want to play, and you will find it switches CDs quicker and quieter than the old Pioneer.

I just received the Bose Wave IV that plays only 1 CD. They no longer produce the 5 CD player/changer. I want to know if this Onkyo player can be played thru the Bose IV

If any audio amp has 2 RCA type connector jacks on the back panel labeled "CD" or "TAPE" or "VIDEO" or "VCR" or "AUX," then, yes, this player will hook right in with the red and black audio wires that come with it. Looks like the Bose unit uses a smaller-type AUX input, so, you will need to get an adapter cable. They cost around $5 and Best Buy should have them. Just tell them you need a stereo RCA to stereo 3.5mm "mini-jack" converter audio cable.
