I had purchased a tablet for myself about a year ago, a Samsung Galaxy Note Pro, which I absolutely LOVE, but had an iphone for years. Yes, I believe so. You only pay the additional amount until you pay off the phone, or you trade it in when you're eligible for an upgrade and then (I'd assume) the 'same rules' apply.
