using Nuvi 55LM while driving

When it is plugged into USB port in the car, the screen shows only that it is being charged. How do I get it to show me driving directions?
Plug it in using your 12V (cigarette lighter) adapter. When you plug a GPS in using the USB port the GPS will go into an update mode or allow you to access the internal memory.

Does this unit read street names or just say "Turn left in 2 tenths of a mile?"

Yes it speaks street names and exit numbers
