Disturbing but good

It is always disturbing to see what could possibly happen to society in the future. In a way, it seems as though the movie tells the major part of the story as though it were reality TV. The country had been previously ravished by civil unrest. A powerful group has dominated, becoming the elite...the Capitol. The other factions have become laborers each within their specific "district" based upon the primary resource available. People are provided the basic necessities in exchange for the continued provision of the raw materials needed to maintain the Capitol's lavish lifestyle. Life in the districts seems to be stuck in the mid-twentieth century whereas the Capitol has progressed into a highly advanced (and gaudy) level.
To keep people in line, an annual "game" has been started...the Hunger Games...where each district sends one male and one female to the Capital where they receive a bit of pampering and heavy training before being sent to the staging area of the games. Once there, it is a fight to the end. Survival skills are tested, not only from the elements, but in how to survive from being killed by other participants. The entire time the game is going on, cameras everywhere are filming every move of each player and broadcasting the "show" back to the Capitol and districts, and if the action gets too dull, a control center can manipulate the environment to make things more interesting for the viewers. In a way, it is like Survivor, except instead of being voted off the show, you are killed during the show. Only one person is meant to survive.

Package Description: So you think you know the story of Little Red Riding Hood. Don't be too sure... One of your favorite fairy tales is turned upside-down and inside-out in what the LA Times called "high-energy, imaginative entertainment." With irreverent storytelling, spunk and wit, Hoodwinked delivers a comedy caper for the young, the young at heart and everyone in between. When the police arrive at Granny's cottage in the woods to answer a domestic disturbance call, it looks like just another open-and-shut case. But Red, Granny, the Big Bad Wolf and the Woodsman are not your usual suspects, as they have their own dark secrets, wily deceptions and conflicting accounts of the crime. Together, they must put aside their differences and find their own original twist on Happily Ever After in their "raucous, genre-busting, animated gem (Entertainment Weekly, The Must List)."

Good teaching element of "Point of View"

The movie opens up at the climax of the supposed rescue from the wolf of Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother by the woodcutter, but quickly the police (who jump to conclusions following the traditional story line) and a detective frog (who is good at investigating and getting the details) arrive on the scene. Each person gives their version of what happened from their point of view. The wolf was NOT the guilty party...but I don't want to spoil the movie for those who haven't seen it.
This is a great movie to show how our understanding of situations will change once we have all the facts. I think this movie can be a great educational tool for teaching people how to write creatively. It even has applications to real life on the importance of not jumping to conclusions. I highly recommend it.

So many of this type of movie focus on youth. However, this particular movie/story is able to bring in not only youth, but older "veterans" into the story line as the Hunger Games brings in previous "winners" to combat each other rather than selecting new faces from each of the districts. As a result, some of the combatants realize the un-justness of this particular Hunger Game and are quickly teaming up, not necessarily to win, but to provide a better chance for Katniss to come out on top as she is the first one to really show compassion to others and how terrible these games really are, thus providing fuel to the rebellion that is slowly gaining momentum in the districts.
There are many good supporting actors in the story line. I am eager to see the future movies...Hey! I might even decide to read the books!

Intriguing yet disturbing

I am always one to enjoy a good sci-fi film that isn't of the horror type genre and Ender's Game proved to be just that type. Oh, yes, there were some strange alien creatures, the Formics, but they were basically like giant ant-types that had developed the ability for travel through space, a species which had previously attacked Earth some 50 years previously.
The main focus is on a young teenage boy named Ender Wiggin. He is extremely intelligent but quiet, but is keen on resolving conflicts in such a way that they never happen again. The government finds out about that (they have been training, testing and monitoring the world's youth for a while) and brings him in for special training in the war against these "invading creatures." It should be noted that this is a typical military sense of thinking: "Destroy the invaders even though it has been 50 years since they tried to invade Earth but were defeated and have not attempted another invasion. Eliminate the race so they won't try again."
Ender and a few other teens he has befriended along the way become a special team. They think they are in training, in space and then on an alien planet, to determine a way to stop the invasion. Much of their training is done through computer manipulation but, unknowingly, when their final "test" arrives in which they are being observed by many big-wigs, they are actually in charge of a real invasion. Ender's team wins the battle after which they realize that they had been used, that Earth lives and ships sacrificed in battle were real ships with real people. Ender also realizes that the dreams he had been having recently were actually the ant creatures trying to communicate with him.
Though the movie has a noble ending, it is a bit anti-climatic considering all the action that has been going on throughout.

8 Complete Movies

These are all older movies made some time ago on Biblical themes. The first 4 on disc one are fairly good but I have not been impressed that much with those on disc 2. They are lesser known movies made by different religious groups. I don't ever remember having seen them on TV or even heard of them. The price was low so I don't feel as though I was cheated. For a younger generation, I probably would not recommend the movies, but for an older person, these may bring back memories.

Hobbit habit

If you have a hobbit habit like I do, part 2 of the Hobbit is a great addition to your DVD collection. I am always appreciative of the extra information added to the DVD showing where the film was made, interviews, the process of getting makeup put on...and it is nice to see the actors without makeup just in case you might bump into one of them in real life on the street. I read the books as a kid, and will probably go back to read them again now with new visions in my head as I read.
The Ultraviolet digital copy is good to have as a back up...as long as you have decent internet speed...but you can watch the movie again from anywhere as long as you remember your login information with Flixter.
