Not enough power through keyboard USB

Connected HD to the USB port on the keyboard, but drive had a clicking noise and was not detected by the computer. My guess is that there may not have been enough power to run the external drive. When I connected it to another Mac it seemed to work just fine.

Couldn't decide between the 2015 version or this late 2016 one. At first I thought not having various built in ports would be inconvenient. That is not the case. The apple adaptor works well but not having the other ports reduces the weight by about 1/2 pound. The computer is really fast, has a super quiet keyboard and weighs the same as a MacBook Air. The 13" is also smaller than the 13" MacBook Air because of the reduced framing around the screen. I highly recommend
