This is a movie!

This is a live action pre-remake of the original featuring all of the same cast. The action sequences have real motion and the music has authentic audible sound with notes and tempo. Warning: Spoilers: When the protagonist overcomes the principle dilemma the story actually concludes with a resolution which is more than I can say for other narratives where this does not happen. It's not as good as that other movie, but it's better than that other other movie that wasn't as good.

The complete seven season series of the award-winning NBC sitcom Mad About You, starring Helen Hunt and Paul Reiser as Paul and Jamie Buchman, a young married couple committed to keeping their relationship happy and healthy while dealing with the hustle and bustle of life in New York City. Mad About You received 34 Emmy nominations during its time on the air between 1992 and 1999.

Just The Way I Remember It

The series itself I would give five stars. I dinged this set two stars for the generic flimsy packaging and the video quality.
This show is witty and hilarious. The writers must have had an absolute blast, and Reiser and Hunt have some real chemistry that brings it all to life. Some of the skits echo real life quite effectively and it's easy to relate if you've ever been married.
The DVD packaging is cheap and flimsy - just a bunch of coated cardboard sleeves. Really don't like this kind of packaging because the sleeve actually touches the disk surface. Unless handled in a clean room, dust will get into the packaging and begin scratching the disc surface as it is inserted and removed. This looks like about the cheapest possible way to cram 14 discs into such a small space, and not a lot of thought or care was put into designing it.
The video quality is about what I remember from over-the-air reception back in the 90's when I originally saw the show - lot's of smeary brown video noise. Not sure if this is because it was tele-cine'd directly from whatever third or fourth generation broadcast cassette they had lying around, or if the original masters were just sloppy. Many late 80's and early 90's TV shows were the unfortunate casualties of the transition from film to video cassette for original recording and they'r forever trapped in the realm of "good enough". Whatever the source, absolutely no effort to clean up the presentation is evident here. This was the least effort required to release the show.

Amazing Independent Film

This film caught me completely off guard. While I'm nowhere near an expert I trained and studied Japanese swordsmanship for a number of years so I know what good technique actually looks like. Most films sacrifice accuracy of technique for cinematic flare or because the actors can't or won't perform precisely. But the actors in this film really seem to know their stuff. This is made all the more profound by the fact that at its heart the martial arts sequences were intended as a backdrop for the real story. Getting the little things right makes all the difference when it comes to immersion and this movie is amazing for that aspect alone. But where it really shines is the story. The narrative consists of layers of allegory which are, thankfully never fully explained. A lot of films trying to convey a theme or message through allegory are so desperate to be understood that they can't help but trip all over the dialogue trying to explain it, but this film abstains from such indulgence, deciding instead to deliver its story and let you figure out what the heck it's all supposed to mean. It's not terribly cryptic, but it is thought provoking in a way that had me thinking back to the story days later as my mind was finally prepared to process some of the nuance that wasn't immediately clear. Like all truly good stories, you're required to contribute some thought to fully appreciate it. It's a crying shame that this wasn't made available on Blu-ray.
