Great 4K qualtiy, good acting, but story is a flop

I must be missing something, but besides the fantastic 4K picture quality of "Black Panther" I thought this was a real dud. Perhaps I was expecting something more along the lines of other Avenger movies rather than a rumble in the jungle. Ugh. Although it had a few (very few) redeeming moments, and I had high expectations from reading reviews, I had to force myself to watch until the end to see if there was anything worth watching. Unfortunately, there wasn't.

Relax and enjoy your favorite films, sporting events or shows on the expansive 65-inch screen of this LG 4K HD TV. Active HDR with Dolby Vision creates an immersive experience with clear images. This LG 4K HD TV features a thin OLED design, giving the television a slender silhouette that doesn't take up much space.

An amazing all-around 4K UHD TV. One of the best.

The LG OLED65C7, in my opinion, ranks among the very best 4K UHD TVs out there. Besides LG’s regrettable decision not to include 3D, which was on some of the 2016 series OLEDs and was the absolute best 3D I’ve ever seen, LG has made some definite and very visible improvements over the 2016 OLED TVs (I previously owned an OLED54E6P).
More HDR picture modes have been added, maximum brightness has been improved for a better HDR experience, motion handling is great without any judder, and color on the 2017 OLEDs is still fantastic. Off-axis viewing of OLED TVs is always a terrific feature, allowing everyone the same viewing experience. There are also some additional user controls for calibrating 2- and 20-point white balance that are a welcome addition to the 2017 OLED models.
The Dolby Atmos sound on the C7 (and some other 2017 models) is a wonderful addition to the 2017 OLEDs. For a TV sound system, lateral and overhead directionality is surprisingly very good. Volume is more than sufficient for my watching area (about 9’ x 15’ in the main viewing area), although the lack of a strong bass component is noticeable at times.
I can also see some definite improvements in things that bothered me with my E6P. The uniformity at near black up to about 5% gray is much better than what it was and, although there is still some minor (but very narrow) banding present, it is no longer distracting when watching actual content, nor do I see any vignetting or blotchiness. (NOTE: due to panel-to-panel differences this may vary, and I’ve seen reports of problems in this area from other C7 owners. Unfortunately, the ‘panel lottery’ seems to persist.)

The other area I’ve seen some improvement is in handling compressed (cable in my case) video signals. There seems to be less blocky artifacts in out of focus areas, although this is still an area that can be improved quite a bit. (LG’s use of the alpha-9 chip in 2018 W8, E8, and C8 TVs may be able to process less-than-pristine signals much better, but that remains to be seen.)
The Cinema and Cinema (User) picture modes are excellent right out of the box, and like last year’s models, there are Expert Dark and Expert Bright modes that are best for calibration. This year, there is the addition of Technicolor Expert modes as well.
The Web OS interface is fantastic. Intuitive, fast, and easy to navigate. LG’s inclusion of an OLED Gallery and some additional features in the TV’s interface is terrific.
The C7 has 4 HMDI ports (like my E6) but they are all HDCP 2.2 capable, which is a fantastic improvement over last year’s models. An audio mini (Headphone) jack would be a nice feature to have, as would the possibility to use the jack for an external subwoofer that could add more of a bass component to the well-engineered Dolby Atmos sound system of the TV.
In summary, the 2017 OLED65C7P is a fantastic 4K UHD TV with excellent black levels, excellent and improved (over 2016 OLEDs) shadow detail, vibrant and realistic color, improved peak brightness for great HDR images, excellent detail in bright (up to about 1000 nit) highlights on HDR content, and terrific overall design and a great form factor. I really love this TV, and couldn’t be happier that I traded up to a 2017 OLED65C7P. LG has done a great job engineering a fantastic display!
Although I was disappointed in the performance of my OLED65E6P, I think LG listened to consumer input and made some definite improvements in the 2017 OLED TVs.

Phenomenal TV - poor documentation & remote
on July 18, 2017

I recently purchased this Sony XBR65X930E as a replacement for an older Pioneer Elite plasma TV, taking a chance that I'd be as impressed with the black levels on the TV as the reviewers were. We recently moved and I needed a TV that could perform better in a living room with poor light control than my plasma TV. In spite of being a long-standing plasma (and now OLED) fan because of their great black levels, and even though the X930E is an edge-lit LCD, I am VERY impressed!
As the reviewers said, this TV a 'light cannon' (capable of over 1,300 nits - sustained) so it does an outstanding job in my living room, which has lots of ambient light during the day. Its light output also makes it an amazing TV for 4K HDR content!. Talk about 'pop'! The 4K images this TV generates are simply jaw-dropping.
Although I had planned to purchase an X900E since it is a FALD, I went with the (more expensive) X930E with its edge-lighting and Slim Backlight Drive Plus for several reasons:
1. Better black levels as mentioned above were supposed to be better than the X900E. I'm amazed that an edge-lit LCD can have such good black levels, without very noticeable (or distracting) blooming or haloing. (I watch TV at night in a totally darkened room with just a bias light behind the TV.)
2. Future Dolby Vision capability with a firmware update (as well a HLG capability). My 2016 OLED has Dolby Vision capability and, having seen Dolby Vision in action with streaming content, I'm convinced it's a great feature to have on a TV and provides a definite step up from HDR-10. I'm looking forward to seeing something 'substantial' with Dolby Vision on a 4K blu-ray.
3. This TV has an X1 Processor Xtreme, rather than the X1 Processor, like the X900E. This was important to me because I watch a lot of cable (a.k.a. horrible compressed signal) TV, and my LG OLED doesn't do as good a job as I'd like handling those poor quality cable signals, especially in darker areas of the image. The X1 Xtreme processor was attractive to me for this reason since it has a reputation for doing a great job of hiding compression artifacts, upscaling to 4K, and minimizing all that pesky countouring (banding) that I see frequently with cable content. The X930E didn't disappoint in this area. I was very impressed - once again!
Although it's just my wife and I watching at night, and we sit pretty much in front of the TV which is about 8 ft. away, I can just about start to see a hint of some shift in the picture when I look toward the extreme edge of the screen, but it's not bothersome to me at all (and certainly nothing like what I used to see with older LCDs!). So, yes, the X930E still has a problem with off-axis viewing (after about 15 degrees or so), but it's not the TV's fault - it's a short coming of the way LCD technology is implemented on most TVs. Surprisingly, this hasn't bothered me, or distracted me, one iota.
In spite of some Web posts saying that the Android interface on this TV (version 7.0) was slow, I've experienced absolutely nothing like that. It's extremely responsive and I haven't noticed any hang-ups or other problems. There really seems to be a LOT you can do in the Android App area and I haven't even explored a fraction of it yet. Sometimes the TV is a bit slow to switch between inputs/modes, but I'm not sure this is as much an Android problem as a problem with the TV in general.
The remote is not great, but usable. Perhaps I'm not used to it yet, but I find the remote a little cumbersome to use and a little anti-intuitive (at least for me). Maybe I haven't found it yet, but it would be nice to have a way to switch quickly between picture modes rather than having to go through the Action menus or through settings. Hopefully, there's a way to do this, but I haven't been able to find it yet, which leads me to the documentation and user guides...
I think the documentation that's supposed to support this outstanding TV is really terrible. It basically tells you nothing other than what you could find out by just poking around the menus yourself. I think it's a shame to have to search the Web to try and find out what some of the things on your own TV do! I can't fault Sony alone for this, however. It seems to be a very widespread, non-customer oriented trend among many (or most) TV manufacturers these days. (I'm using the documentation that came with my Pioneer plasma as a point of comparison. It was excellent.)
Overall, apart from the horribly inadequate documentation and poor remote (which both prompted me to take off 1 star for in my rating), this TV is absolutely outstanding. I would have loved to be able to step up to a Sony Z9D, but to be honest I'm glad I saved the extra money because this TV does everything I want it to do, and it does it extremely well - better than I ever though an LCD could.
As I saw one of the reviewers of the TV do, I really have to bow to the engineers at Sony for producing a phenomenal TV and working some real magic. I'm amazed at how far LCD technology has come since I had my first LCD in 2007. Fantastic job!
OLED TV vs. the X930E? VERY close, and each TV does something just a little better than the other. I absolutely love the blacks I get out of my OLED and it's great not to have to worry about off-axis viewing in my family room where the theater seats are spread out far off-axis. On the other hand, the light output from the X930E makes 4K HDR content look amazing, and the colors are just knock-your-socks-off vibrant. And as I stated earlier, one of the things I'm VERY happy about is the X930E's truly remarkable processing capabilities in terms of making low-quality content look good, and getting rid of those annoying contours when viewing a uniform background on the screen, and up-converting non-4K material to near 4K.
I love 'em both for different reasons! But I think if you have your sights on an X930E, you will be amazed at what a phenomenal TV it is. For me, this XBR65X930E with its Xtreme processor is definitely worth the Xtreme price tag. You get what you pay for, right?

Geek Squad? Really!?

I recently purchased a Sony XBR65X930E ($3K + tax) and also purchased Best Buy's Basic Setup (one source). Because the UHD TV is so heavy, I didn't want to unbox this with my wife, so I purchased Best Buy's Basic Set Up. First of all, I can't believe the guys who deliver the TV don't take it out of the box and plug it in to see if it works! How ridiculous is that for a fairly expensive TV! Since I'm familiar with how to connect everything, I really just needed to have them take it out of the box and put it on my credenza, which is why I purchased the Basic Setup.
All I can say is that I hope the guys who came to do the Basic Setup WEREN'T really from Geek Squad (although my receipt says they should have been). If they were, Best Buy's Geek Squad is in BIG trouble. These guys didn't have a clue!
It was a good thing I was watching them, because they were about to reach into the box to lift the TV out, instead of taking the retaining clips out and lifting the box off! Good grief.
After they put it on the stand (thank goodness I had already assembled that!), they started to walk out. No plug in to see if it works? No setting up one source? What gives. I told them to hang on while I plugged it in to be sure it worked. They actually looked ticked that they had to wait for me to plug it in! Couldn't believe it.
Well, all that said, I'm going to get a refund for that totally incompetent service. I could have asked a neighbor to help me and gotten more help!
I'm totally disappointed in Best Buy over this.

Loved this movie!

I initially purchased this to see if it was appropriate for my grandchildren (less than 4 yrs old) to watch. I thought it was a little too violent and scary for them in parts, but I absolutely loved the movie myself! The story is terrific and the compositing blends CG with real scenery seamlessly. It was totally immersive. I really loved this movie.

Great visuals, so-so story

From the reviews I read, I expected that the story line wouldn't be as good as Snow White. It wasn't bad, but seemed a bit contrived and forced in places.
However, the imagery and graphics were great. This was the main reason I purchased this movie, and I wasn't disappointed in this regard.
So, if you're looking for great visuals, this is a good one as long as you don't mind a weak story.

I have Comcast and still watch many shows in standard definition. I want the SD picture on this TV to be at least as good as my 2014 55" Samsung, while it Wows me with HD and 4K content. Will this TV do this, or will I be disappointed in my old SD shows?

Be careful with this and be sure to try and check out the TV you have your eye on before you buy. I have Verizon FiOS and the performance on my 65C7P in dark areas of the picture when watching cable, or less than pristine content, is a bit disappointing. Honestly, if you watch mostly TV I would advise waiting until 2018 to get an LG OLED. Most of the LG 2018 OLED models will have an alpha-9 processing chip that is supposed to do a much better job with compressed content (cable) and non-HD sources. The hope is that the processing will be much better and begin to approach the excellent processing that Sony TVs with the X1 Xtreme processing chip have.
