CoastalFilm's Reviews

Ghostbusters: Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson star as a quartet of Manhattan-based "paranormal investigators". When their government grants run out, the former three go into business as The Ghostbusters, later hiring Hudson on. Armed with electronic paraphernalia, the team is spectacularly successful, ridding The Big Apple of dozens of ghoulies, ghosties and long-legged beasties. Tight-lipped bureaucrat William Atherton regards the Ghostbusters as a bunch of charlatans, but is forced to eat his words when New York is besieged by an army of unfriendly spirits, conjured up by a long-dead Babylonian demon and "channelled" through beautiful cellist Sigourney Weaver and nerdish Rick Moranis. The climax is a glorious sendup of every Godzilla movie ever made-and we daresay it cost more than a year's worth of Japanese monster flicks combined. Who'd ever dream that the chubby, cheery Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man would turn out to be the most malevolent threat ever faced by New York City? When the script for Ghostbusters was forged by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, John Belushi was slated to play the Bill Murray role; Belushi's death in 1982 not only necessitated the hiring of Murray, but also an extensive rewrite. The most expensive comedy made up to 1984, Ghostbusters made money hand over fist, spawning not only a 1989 sequel but also two animated TV series (one of them partially based on an earlier live-action TV weekly, titled The Ghost Busters. Ghostbusters II: Ivan Reitman's sequel to the phenomenally successful Ghostbusters is looser and more self-assured than the original. The film opens with a title reading "Five Years Later" and finds the ghostbusters living in hard times. A restraining order has forbidden the boys to partake in paranormal warfare, and as a result they have had to seek other lines of work. Ray (Dan Aykroyd) and Winston (Ernie Hudson) spend their time performing at children's' birthday parties, and Egon (Harold Ramis) is busy conducting experiments investigating the effect of human emotions on the environment, leaving ghostbusting behind. Venkman (Bill Murray) and Dana (Sigourney Weaver) have split up. Venkman now hosts a local cable show called "The World of the Psychic." Dana, now divorced and the mother of a little baby named Oscar, works as an art restorer in a museum -- and this is where the plot kicks in. While Dana is restoring a portrait of a 16th-century tyrant by the name of Vigo the Carpathian, the portrait becomes hexed. The evil Vigo wants to return to life by taking over the body of Dana's little child. Vigo has enlisted Dana's boss, Janosz Poha (Peter MacNicol), to compel Dana to cooperate. Soon dirty sludge and slime flow through the streets of Manhattan, and the ghostbusters have to reunite to save the city from a funky paranormal evil.

Excellent New Release for an Old Classic

Little could be added to good reviews of the original Ghostbusters movie, or the negataive reviews of its sequel, so this will address the new double set quality.
PQ is excellent, better (though not dramatically so) than the previous bluray release.
Special features for GB1 are outstanding, with a new piece about the influence of New York City. Great fun and some good info as well. The GB2 features are limited; they are missing the cartoon features from the previous double dvd release--not a big loss.
Overall a highly recommended set, especially at sale prices.

So I feel EVERYONE missed the boat on The Internship. This is a very funny and very sweet movie. Those that objected to it as just a love poem to Google missed the point. Give it another chance with an open mind.
The Watch is just plane weird. Too much talent forced into a very odd story, and SPOILER when the story takes and extraterrestrial turn, you really have to sett aside common sense to finish the film.
Dodgeball is just plain silly and fun, with some great cameos and over the top comedy--but what else would you expecdt from this group of actors.
PQ pretty good for all three.

All grat titles in their own way orginally, this is a great set for your retro collection. The series got better as Jack Ryan duties were taken over by Harrison Ford, but all are worth a look.
Special features are average at best. PQ is ok but not great. These are not remasters, but better than the DVD PQ.

47 Ronin is a better film than generally reviewed or expected by most. If uou are a fan of martial arts films, or things Japanese, definitely worth a purchase.
The 3D is great in spots, average in others. Not a deal breaker either way, but fun nevertheless.

Interesting double feature

For those of you that are fans of Miami Vice, the tv show, this update/reboot may be disappointing. In trying to bring a modern flair to the concept, the film loses its 80's chic (ok, it seemed chic in the 80's . . .) The plot becomes way to confusing, with too much ancillary romance, not enough of the original series' bromance, and with Jamie Foxx growling instead of acting.
The PQ of Vice is ok, but you probably can't blame the transfer--director Michael Mann has a penchant for grainy filming techniques, and since much of the film takes place at night, in clubs, or in dark and dank locations, the grain is intensified. Still, the transfer does represent Mann's style consistently.
Inside Man is a great little caper film, one that brings director Spike Lee back to the big screen with an interesting, complex caper film. No spoiler alerts here--just know that the film is worth watching to the end,
PQ is excellent--very filmic, with fine details apparent in all conditions. Special features are very good--a quality commentary track by Spike Lee is definitely worth a listen.
Overall, this double feature is worth the price, especially if you can get a deal on it . . .

It's hard to review a group of films so iconic in the American film landscape. Suffice it to say that the original trilogy is quintessential 80's adventure at its best.
Technically, the bluray presentations are very good, considering the age of the films and the advancement in technology since they were first filmed. That having been said, the "newer" the film, the better the bluray upgrade. Unfortunately, the worst film of the bunch, Crystal Skull, is the best picture quality. At least that makes it worth a second look it you haven't seen it for a while.
Other than the unfortunate choice by director Steven Spielberg to NOT do commentary tracks, or allow others to do them, the special features are excellent-- a mix of new material, and material ported over from the DVD special editions. Of note: if you are a special feature fanatic, like I am, and if you happen to own the individual edition of Crystal Skull, don't get rid of it. the features for this film were pared down for the box set.
Overall, as you might expect, a very hearty recommendation for this classic series.

Matt and Ben in the early days . . .

If you haven't seen this early work of the men who would grow up to be Jason Bourne and one of Hollywood's hottest directors, then check this one out.
A great film about friendship, facing responsibility, and tragedy survived but not necessarily bested. Damon and Affleck won Oscars for screenwriting, and Robin Williams for Best Supporting Actor for the film, one that sometimes seems a little dated but still remains an uplifting story.
The bluray presentation is fairly good given the age and budget on the film--an upgrade from the DVD, but not a reference quality one.
Still, highly recommended for the writing and acting in this great example of a smallish film that is a success in most every way.

A Few Good Men is a must for fans of Tom Cruise or Jack Nicholson. Each has a field day with their parts. This is Cruise before he went off the rails, and Nicholson before he stopped caring so much.
Adapted from a stage play, the film transitions well to the screen, without feeling like something is missing. Not overly dramatic, well photographed, with great supporting performances by Kevin Pollak and Kiefer Sutherland.
Extras are the same as the DVD release--a decent commentary, and standard behind the scenes documentary.
A good trip to an earlier decade . . . with military themes that still wring true today.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the classic mix of live action and animation, was a trend-setter when first released, and it still holds up 25 years later (am I really that old . . . ?)
A clever mix of circa 1940's detective flick and wacky cartoon characters, the movie should be no surprise to most of us. What IS a surprise is how wonderful it looks on bluray. It just goes to show that a carefully crafted, big-budget production from the 80's can still look new and fresh with today's technology.
The special features are virtually identical to the previous special edition dvd, so if you already own it, you won't lose anything by trading up. That having been said, there isn't any new material here either.
Still, a highly recommended release to add to you catalogue.
