Goodman is sinister good. Quirky, scary, spooky and unpredictable. You never really know, maybe suspect, but maybe not. Good false clues and good writing at times. But, com'on. Seriously! The ending is about as weird as it gets. My wife thinks I am crazy for saying this was an interesting film. She hated it. I stayed with it until its unpredictable end. Recommended only because of the acting. Not necessarily the story.
As improbable as the premise is, this thriller turns out to be not only entertaining but heart-warming in the end. Full of violence but only the bad guys get killed or hurt and you go, "YEAH!" when the protagonist pummels some of these jerks. Interesting that this film did not receive much attention. It is what I would call a sleeper.
McCarthy is brilliant, funny, even hilarious...only not so much in this movie. She was all those things in The Heat, ably helped by Sandra Bullock, but this movie only has a fraction of the humor and good acting, most of it impromptu, of The Heat. McCarthy needs to pick her material with more care. This one was just average at best.
Crude, crass humor abounds. If you like that kind of thing, this is your movie. De Niro is as gross as it gets until the end when you discover his real motives. I am seventy and the last time I was with a 20 year old, I was 21. Young women are not interested in old farts like us. Period. But it does have its redeeming qualities although most older folks will leave the room before you recognize them.
