An intelligent science fiction classic

Canadian Denis Villeneuve is one of the most brilliant filmmakers alive, having just come off of a string of five consecutive masterpieces, starting with "Polytechnique" in 2009 and proceeding with "Incendies", "Prisoners", "Enemy", and last year's "Sicario" (my favorite film of 2015). Known for bending viewers' minds with provocative movies that sometimes require copious thought to unlock their meanings, "Arrival" is not an exception. Ostensibly an alien-invasion movie about an expert linguist who is called upon to decode the language of arriving aliens in order to communicate with them, the film reaches so much further, even to primal questions of human existence. It is a hard film to discuss because it contains a bona-fide puzzle a viewer must unlock (involving time and, possibly, other dimensions) in order to even approach the film's meaning. If one 'gets' it, the film's denouement can be an emotional epiphany for the viewer; if not, one might flounder in enigmas upon leaving the theater. The film's genius is that either way the viewer should find this film haunting him for days after, perhaps taunting him to unlock its secrets. A second viewing is virtually a necessity, not only to study its careful plotting but also to appreciate its emotional resonances one has been too busy to appreciate upon first viewing, and it is a revelation upon seeing it again to find that the film has completely 'played fair,' providing visual and audio clues that had passed unnoticed. Amy Adams plays the linguist with such deep sincerity and total commitment, so important when one realizes that she is the true center of the film -- and Villeneuve, along with cinematographer Bradford Young, has supplied visuals so breathtakingly stunning you might have to pinch yourself to believe what your eyes are seeing. The visuals are also matched by the remarkable score by Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson (who had teamed with Villeneuve on "Prisoners" and "Sicario") using vocals and experimental piano 'loops' to put viewers into an other-worldly state of being. It is such an audacious, creative piece of intelligent, adult science fiction (something rarely encountered today), the thoughtful, open-minded viewer should embrace this as a gem for both the mind and heart, and not hold against it that it is less interested in the usual science fiction tropes than the light and dark paradigms of human existence.

One of 2014's most entertaining films.

While not an artistic achievement or a film of extraordinary style, I enjoyed "The Imitation Game" as much as any film this year. It tells the true story of mathematician Alan Turing who tries to crack the German Enigma code during World War II with help from fellow mathematicians, and it intersperses the wartime events with scenes of Turing's early school life and the post-war tragic period leading to his death. An extraordinary story (one which had to be kept secret for decades for security reasons), it was well scripted to heighten its suspense and human drama, and beautifully filmed with powerful acting. I recommend this film highly.

A powerful film that you'll never forget

"Whiplash", an independent film shot in 19 days, was one of the genuine pleasures of 2014 in film, telling the story of a promising young jazz drummer named Andrew at a prestigious music conservatory in New York being driven to manic ambition by a sadistic conductor/instructor named Terrence Fletcher. But it's so much more than a Faustian morality drama in functioning as a metaphor for the choice of reaching for the highest fame and success or being happy with the simple joys of life. It stars J.K. Simmons who reminds me of the great George C. Scott in that his performance here as a sadistic college band instructor is almost as intense in displaying unleashed machismo as Scott did playing General Patton. At this writing, the 2015 Oscars haven't been given out yet, but Simmons couldn't lose the Oscar if he dropped his pants on Hollywood Boulevard. Writer/director Damien Chazelle drew from his own experiences in High School (hopefully exaggerated!) to make a film that virtually assaults the viewer as if he were a punching bag continuously being pummeled by an enraged boxer. After an almost unbearable nine-minute drumming climax, the viewer will probably stagger out into the street, then spend days getting over the experience. By pushing the envelope almost to the unendurable, Chazelle has carved a cinematic masterpiece.

Iñárritu gives us an eccentric masterpiece
on March 27, 2015

Alejandro González Iñárritu's brilliant tour-de-force, "Birdman", is a most audacious dark comedy about a cinematic ex-superhero trying to make a comeback with a Broadway play, but that's only the setup. It's unorthodox to a flaw: many will find getting up to speed difficult with its hyper-kinetic madcap burst of verbal fencing amongst its cornucopia of stars (all at the top of their game), headed by Michael Keaton playing the title character. I deeply love Iñárritu as a filmmaker. His best work conveys a cinematic exuberance that comes close to a Mahler symphony in its scope, forming a synthesis of despair and joyfulness in rendering the human experience. He's made five films to date, each of which won countless awards at Cannes, Venice, the Golden Globes and Academy Award nominations. His first three films comprise a trilogy utilizing intersecting stories, the best of which, "Babel", won Iñárritu Best Director at Cannes, and is still Iñárritu's masterpiece. "Birdman", however, is a complete about-face from the triptych epic to a simpler, more focused drama with tour-de-force directing that shows him at the peak of his powers. Iñárritu's camera moves everywhere, gliding and flying about (as if the entire film is virtually one long single take), following actors' movements, going through doorways, behind stages, into the street, even up to the roof and beyond -- while a soundtrack of drums underscores the action like the nervous approach of an intracranial hemorrhage. This is a film that demands much of its viewers, but the intelligent ones who allow themselves to sink into the marvelous mosaic of the experience will find something to revel in, and eagerly want to revisit after getting their breath back. A rich, extravagant celebration in cinema that fully deserved the 2015 Oscar for Best Picture.

Film flat and unfunny but Blu-ray is exquisite

I'm not a big Wes Anderson fan so I didn't care for the film. In fact, I don't know how anyone could spend so much money on such a great cast, superb visuals, and magnificent production design on such a hollow and uninvolving film. But the Blu-ray is top-notch. If you're an Anderson fan (I'm not), you'll love it.

David Fincher's film version of the best-selling novel is well-made and suspenseful, and on track until it derails somewhat during its last act when believability is thrown to the wind. But most of it is a great ride. Blu-ray looks superb, but there is a lack of special features. Recommended, but no masterpiece.

A Lot More than a Romantic Comedy
on June 14, 2014

"Her" is a very rich and profound romantic sci-fi comedy about a lonely man whose job is to write love letters for other lonely souls yet finds himself becoming 'involved' with an advanced operating system he's purchased to run his life, and the film somehow manages to be both a warm, touching story that audiences will be drawn into, as well as a probing look at both our socio-political obsession with technology and an accurate analysis of a love relationship in all its stages. What Jonze has done is a sort of miraculous mating of Frank Capra and Franz Kafka sans cynicism.
Far from the stupid film it may sound like, it manages to be a detailed exploration of the human animal going through all the stages of a romantic relationship as well as a social critique of how much electronics have taken over our lives. Written and directed by the inimitably creative Spike Jonze, it is a film you'll be drawn into and think about long afterwards.

I do not want my ink automatically re-ordered. I would almost never use colors, so they would probably just dry out from non use. That would be fine, because my use is black. It the color cartridge shows empty, would I be able to print in black?

I'm not an expert, but I'm fairly sure it will work if you just change some setting (you should call HP to find out how). As far as the ink automatically re-ordered, I've had that service for a few years (and I love it -- but I print more than most average people because I am president of a poetry society) and they only send a replacement when your ink gets down to a certain level, so they won't send you one if you don't need it (at least that's my own experience). As far as not printing in color, you get the most benefit from the service because it charges the same for color or black and white, so if you print only in black and white you are not taking the most advantage from the service. I'm not sure this instant ink service is right for you -- but it certainly is for people like me! I love it!

Call HP because they are so reasonable and have excellent customer service.

Will this work with chrome book?

Honestly, I don't know, but I can't see why not. If you have Wi-fi, the printer will ever print from an iphone!
