I wanted to use this without the back cardboard panels to allow for more breathability, but it is way to flimsy without them. It would definitely fall over without them. It is fairly sturdy with them, though. I don't like the shelving system. The braces that hold them up, don't hold them in place. They just rest on them. So with the glossy finish, they slide easily. When trying to move my receiver, the shelves slide and collapse downward. You have to be very careful with that. All in all, it does its job.

This extender will not make your actual router "better." It extends the signal from your router to a broader area. No, I would not put it on the same floor as your router, that would defeat the purpose. The extender is for a situation, for example, where your router is on the first floor and you don't get no or poor signal on the third floor. You would put the extender on the second or third floor to boost the signal to the location where it is poor. If your router is on the middle floor, and you get a good signal in all parts of your house, then you would not "need" this product.
