Wow! Goodbye iPhone!

I'm a long time Apple user. You can find several verified purchase reviews written by me here within the past year for iPads, iPhones, and Macs. Apple was already angering me with their apparent abandonment of certain Mac lines like the Mini and their heavy-handed approach to others, like when they assumed we all don't need any ports other than USB-C on MacBooks. The latest iPhones were the last straw. First, I need a big phone. Second, I need more than a paltry 64GB to support my music and photo content needs. The 256GB iPhone 8 is basically a $950 ever-so-slightly improved iPhone 7. It should honestly be named the 7S, not 8. The truly "new" iPhone, the X, is absurdly priced for the 256GB version at $1,150. I saved hundreds (nearly $500 in the case of the most expensive iPhone X) and purchased this Note 8. I already have high-end micro-SD cards that give me the capacity I need. I was initially apprehensive about switching to Android. However, after nearly a decade as an iPhone user, I am now kicking myself for not making the move away from Apple sooner. This phone is so much more capable and better than the iPhone, it's not even funny. I'm not talking about in a geeky fringe app way nor am I referring to apps at all. I'm referring to basic functionality. I don't play games or use any weird apps, so I don't need a ton of processing power although this phone has a lot of power to spare. I do use my smartphone as my personal everyday assistant. It has to help me schedule, keep track of people and things, take photos when needed, remind me when needed and basically function as an extension of my laptop when I'm mobile. This Note 8 is far more capable at that than my iPhone 7 was. Also, it is absolutely stunning to look at. The sleek lines, handsome body, gorgeous screen and included S pen all combine to make a very attractive package and a sweet bargain to boot. It only took me a day to get accustomed to Android and I now see that Apple has definitely lost me as an iPhone customer and very likely as a MacBook customer as well if they keep insisting on a single-port capability laptop. Apple couldn't care less because they know there are more than enough people who are willing to continue buying their stuff regardless of how badly Apple treats them or how little Apple innovates. I just will no longer be among them and I couldn't be happier with my new Note 8. Even Android Auto is much better than Car Play in my vehicle and I can now use Waze for navigation. Sweet!

Hue system is awesome

I really like our Hue system. Although it's cool using the system as hands-free light control via voice recognizing devices like our Echo, I really like the automated scheduling and off-site light control features. Gone are the old days of clunky plug-in mechanical light timers that were not only absurdly predictable but could get completely thrown out of sync if a power outage occurred during your absence. Now, when I'm away from home, I can set several different times so lights appear as if they were being manually controlled. If a power outage occurs, it won't affect my lights at all when power returns. These lights are typical 60-watt brightness. They don't have a very bright or a white high color temperature but they get the job done. And when they go on sale like the bulbs I just purchased here at Best Buy, you can add extra remotely controlled bulbs all over the house. You only need one Hue bridge. Once you have it, you can add lights all over on different schedules and voice-commanded by different names. No complicated setup is required. I took the new bulbs home, inserted them into my lamps, powered them on, launched my Hue smartphone app, found the new bulbs in the app and added them to the bridge. That's it.

Wow... Phone quality has taken a nosedive

I realize landlines are going the way of the dinosaurs in this cellular, VOIP and social media new world. However, I didn't think I'd get a stinker this bad when searching for a simple wall phone with caller ID. This thing is terrible. First, although it's wall mountable, they provide no short wall cord in the box. You have to wrap the single long cord around plastic tabs recessed in the body to wall mount. Next, no backlight. The thing uses four AA batteries (not included, of course) but doesn't have a backlight. The LCD is hard to read in anything other than optimal light. Next, sound quality is abysmal. I heard not one, not two but at least three different variations of noise on the line. One was random static, another was a constant high pitched whining sound and another was a recurring warbling sound whenever the person on the other end spoke. I'm going to take this stinker back and try one more time before giving up on it completely. As bad as this phone is, I'm assuming it absolutely must be defective. If the second one is any better, I will update this review in fairness. If you're reading this line, it means this is still the original review and the second phone was just as bad as the first.

I bought this particular style and size for my wife and she loves it. The size is perfect. It doesn't look awkwardly large or masculine on her arm. It looks just right. In fact, she's happy I bought the 42mm rather than the 38mm because she wears corrective lenses and feels the text is a bit too small for her to read without effort. The even smaller 38mm would have been even more difficult to read.
The watch allows her to breeze through the day without being tethered to her phone. Although the phone has to remain nearby for the watch to be most effective, she can move about the office while her phone stays at her desk and simply glance at her wrist when new messages, calls, emails or calendar reminders arrive. It's even better at home and on secure networks because the watch can automatically switch and use the wireless network to maintain connections to the phone outside of Bluetooth range. That allows access over the entire house or building while the phone remains stationary. The watch is also good for simple yet useful widgets for use with companion apps, apps that utilize wallet/Apple Pay, and apps like Hue and smart home apps. My only complaint with Apple Watch is the glaring omission of the Notes app. There isn't any kind of notes integration. It would be very nice to have a shopping list or other note available on the wrist for easy reference. You'll have to use Tasks if you want to gaze at lists on your wrist, because for unknown reasons, Apple integrated tasks but not notes.
The sport band is very comfortable. The product photos make it look like a rigid rubbery material but it''s actually a very soft silicone type material. Battery life is decent, providing two full days of use between charge. If you're a light user, you can get 2-4 days between charges. I originally bought an Apple Watch for myself and didn't really see the need for it. However, after spending some time with it, I see now that it's actually a pretty neat and useful piece of tech. Although I still don't necessarily consider it an essential item like a smartphone, tablet or computer, it does make mobile task managing much more efficient.

Best case available right now

I purchased this after first unsuccessfully trying a couple cases ordered online. The case options for the 2017 iPad are currently slim pickings due to Apple changing the size yet again. Even Apple is currently only offering the smart cover and no OEM cases at the moment. This iPad is closer in size to the Air 1 than the Air 2. This case fits it perfectly. Unlike the cases I ordered online, all of the ports line up perfectly and the iPad does not pop out along the edges. The case is constructed to offer excellent drop and overall protection and has the same honeycomb interior and other shock absorbing attributes found on protective iPhone cases. These features help to disperse and absorb shocks in the event of a fall. The cover also securely latches with a firm magnetic closure to protect the screen while not in use. The inside of the front cover is lined with very soft fabric and has a very well concealed groove for propping the iPad up in landscape mode. It's not the cheapest or thinnest case but based on the level of protection and perfect fit, it was worth every penny over the cheaper options I tried before finding this gem. The added bulk does not bother me because I l know my iPad is well protected in the event of an unfortunate drop. The only somewhat negative is folding the rear cover back to use the iPad with one hand. It's a little awkward due to the design and magnetic closure strap, but otherwise love everything else about the case.

I used to buy Applecare with every iPhone for every family member. After wasting hundreds and being less than satisfied, I dropped it altogether. A screen repair through Apple is currently the same price as Applecare minus the deductible. So you're basically paying for a screen repair in advance and then paying a deductible on top of it. Apple would counter that you're paying for the extra year's warranty as well, but I've been less than thrilled with Apple's support lately. Long waits, repeated canned diagnosis, and even an outright refusal to service my phone once has soured me on the once stellar Apple service. Now that most carriers carry the smartphone equivalent to leasing (new phone every year plans), plans like Applecare are really becoming obsolete to those who take good care of their phones. On the flip side, if you plan to keep the phone at least two years and either work in a hazardous environment, are klutz prone or buying an iPhone for a child or teen, it's probably worth investing in Applecare. That's only because you'll probably need more than one screen or other structural repair over the two years. Outside of those circumstances, I really can't recommend Applecare these days.

Smaller size but inferior camera to 7 plus
on April 29, 2017
Posted by: JStylze
Verified Purchase:Yes
I own both the 7 and the 7 plus, so here's the basic differences if you opt for the smaller version. First, the obvious. It's smaller in size, which is welcomed by those who prefer smaller phones over so-called "phablets". Believe it or not, there are plenty of people out there not yet ready to carry around huge 5" or larger screen phones.
The processor is the same in both phones as is performance for the most part. The screen on the 7 plus is a little brighter and more vivid than the 7 but it really is negligible. The camera is pretty much the biggest difference. The iPhone 7's single lens camera seems like pretty much the same old camera found on the 6S/6S plus and 6/6 plus. It's okay but nothing special and has no groundbreaking new features. On the other hand, the camera on the 7 plus is special. The dual-lens 7 plus can perform tricks like depth of field, where the two differently focused lenses produce the same shallow DOF result as a fast prime lens. It also takes excellent general photos.
So, if you buy the 7, you're basically getting: a smaller phone, negligibly less bright/vivid screen and a camera that's inferior to the & plus but still a nice basic camera. I took excellent vacation photos with a 6 plus and 6S plus last summer, so I can't knock the camera. I'm just super excited to take pics this year with my 7 plus because it's so much better. If you frequently use your iPhone for photography, the 7 plus camera is good enough to warrant deciding if it's worth the trade off to go with the 7..

Very flexible little streamer
on April 11, 2017

The Fire stick's small size conceals the power within this little guy. The ability to side load apps like Kodi and others open a door of options and freedom that tightly locked and closed ecosystem streaming devices like Apple TV can merely dream of. If you or someone you know is familiar with using a device like this to its full potential, you'll have a much more capable streaming device at a fraction of the price of a Roku or Apple TV. Of course, as with any such system, there's a potential for abuse as well. Just make sure to stay on the right side of the law when using sideloaded apps and you'll be fine. The only reason I knocked off a star is because the stick is slower and has a weaker wifi signal than its big brother, Fire TV box. The Fire TV is worth he extra loot but if you're trying to save, the stick is a more than capable device. It can do everything it's big brother can do, just a little slower.

Best Cameras, so-so archiving
on April 10, 2017

Verified Purchase:Yes
I love Nest cams. Out of all the wifi security cameras I've tried, Nest is the easiest to configure, most reliable at staying online, and has the best quality when viewing remotely. The app is easy to use and also very stable and reliable. Setting up new or additional cameras is a breeze and when I go away on lengthy trips, they work very well from the moment I leave until the moment I return. My only issue with Nest is that the only archiving option available is a pretty expensive cloud storage option. There are no local storage features like a microSD card nor any free cloud options. The alerts are also smarter with the paid subscription. So in a nutshell, you get a very nice quality camera that is easy to configure but alert and storage options are greatly limited unless you subscribe the Nest Aware.

Okay but a few quirks
on April 2, 2017
Posted by: JStylze
Verified Purchase:Yes
I love my new iPhone 7 but it's not quite as much as I'd hoped.
First, the good:
- The new jet black body color is really nice. Like most owners, I utilize a case but when the phone is naked, the shiny jet black body looks stunning
- The camera is definitely noticeably better than its predecessors. The colors and sharpness are outstanding. The new dual-camera portrait feature allows you to take razor sharp professional looking shallow depth of field portrait photos.
- It seems to be a tad brighter than my wife's iPhone 6S Plus but I really have to squint to see it.
- Sound from the built in speakers is much improved from my old iPhone 6 Plus but still no match for a good set of ear buds, earphones or external speakers.
- It's a little more water resistant. While not completely immersible like Samsung's phones claim to be, (I know someone who depended on that waterproofing when he accidentally left his phone sitting atop his parked car in the rain yet still ended up with a moisture damaged bricked phone) it claims to be more resistant to splashes, accidental exposures and *ahem* things like rain.
That's about it. Some of the other "improvements" that Apple claims are a sharper screen in addition to being brighter, faster, LTE, faster processor and better battery life. However, I haven't noticed significant improvement in these areas personally.
Now for the bad:
- While I see a slightly brighter screen on the 7 than the 6S, the sharpness is about the same. With both phones side by side, I actually prefer the 6S screen. It's cooler and more natural looking. The 7 is noticeably warmer and has a harsh yellow tint to it. You can tweak the colors in the settings to make it cooler but out of the box, my wife's 6S display wins hands down and it's not even close.
- I don't notice any improvement or difference in performance with LTE, wifi or even during routine tasks. I'm not a gamer on my phone, so maybe that's where the performance difference is most noticeable. But in day to day tasks like texting, email, web browsing and using regular apps, I see virtually no difference in performance between the two phones.
- Rear camera and scrapped earphone jack aside, the body is nearly identical to the 6 /6S.
- Speaking of the scrapped headphone jack, if like me, you use corded high-end headphones or buds with your iPhone, it's time to invest in a Bluetooth set. This was one of the "improvements" that was actually a step back if you ask me. My fave Audio-Technica headphones and $200 Bose earbuds are now useless with my iPhone unless I purchase a lightning to 3.5mm adapter that Apple would be all too happy to sell me at extra cost. Seeing as how I'm already invested in good phones and buds, it's not really a choice. So factor that cost into the overall price of the phone if you need the same.
- The force touch home button feels a little weird at first but you can adjust the haptic feedback. It's even weirder when the battery drains and the button becomes unresponsive.
So, as you see, there are some improvements but not enough to warrant an upgrade unless you were a couple generations behind like I was with my 6 Plus. If you have a 6S, I would absolutely wait for the next iPhone model this fall. If you have a 6 or older, you can take the leap. The differences between the 7 and those models will be more noticeable than between the 7 and 6S, especially if your phone is a few years old or older.

Nest is a wifi camera. You do not need any wiring. It works off an AC adapter and cannot be hard wired. As long as you have an AC outlet nearby, it can work anywhere in the house. I actually like it better than hard wired cameras for that reason.
