Hoover does it again
on November 11, 2017

from Massapequa Park
This is my first handheld rechargeable vacuum I have owned since the days of the the Black and Decker Dustbuster( well over 25 years ago.)I have used other handheld rechargeable vacuums but always found they did not have the enough power. The Hoover FUSION Cordless Pet Stick Vacuum is a mixed bag when it comes to that ( more on that below.) The vacuum comes with all the expected features of a modern vaccum – bagless with a decent size canister, built well and multiple accessories. In review :
Assembly-
The Hoover was easy to put together and you can , mostly , figure out how to put it together without looking at the the instructions. I was a bit confused on he mounting pieces until I realized there was duplicate parts. Yes, I know that is rare and usually not the case but there is definitely two accessory tool mounts when it looks like there should be one. No big deal and the main unit assembles in a minute or two.
Construction
Like everything these days, it is nearly all plastic. That does not mean there is anything wrong with that, the main unit is solid. The brush head does tend to rattle a bit during use and at one point I thought something was broke. However, after examination, I found it was just the roller design in the power head and there was nothing wrong.
Weight and balance
The unit was a bit heavier than I would like but there is not much you can do if you want power and durability. It did get tiresome after using it in handheld mode with no power head on it. For quick clean ups, it is no problem. For prolonged handheld use with accessories, most women would find it too heavy. It tended to be a bit unnbalanced but not too much. This all changed when you install the extension wand and multifloor brush head and used in upright mode It was easy to use and manuvered well . Keep in mind, this is not a true upright vacuum so it does not stand up by itself.
Battery life -
The battery life was just perfect. In full rug mode, it cleaned 670 sq ft of floor space with a 26 minute run time. I used it in rug mode knowing that would use the most amount of power. I felt 26 minutes was very good for the battery size and weight. Next I used it in handheld mode with a brush head tool and I cleaned all surface areas in apartment and it lasted 37 minutes. Again , very impressive. It was easy handle most small jobs , Don’t get too hung up when you see run times in the 30 minute – that is par for course when considering balancing, weight, design etc of a battery powered vacuum. One nice feature is the main unit has a battery meter built into the control panel , no guessing when the battery is going to die.
Sound
I would put this as average for a handheld. Not quiet by any means by acceptable.
Cleaning
As indicated, the Hoover - FUSION Cordless Pet Stick Vacuum was a mixed bag in terms of power. In handheld mode, I expected suction to be stronger. It cleaned well with the accessories but I could not test it to limits. I just felt it could have had more suction power. When I attached the powerhead brush and used the vacuum as an upright, that is where the unit really shined. The powerhead brush was exceptional – deep cleaning that was comparable to a traditional upright. It really did a great job.
Accessories and storage
It comes with a wall mount that is just okay. The design of the vacuum is a bit akward for the wall mount and you have to find another place for the the charger and battery. Hoover should come up with a better design that integrates the charger, battery, accessories and the vacuum.
Overall , I like the vacuum. There are some minor design changes that would make this a winner. I have seen comparisons to the competition, mainly that the big name out there is better. Of course it is , but that big name is also 2 to 3 times the price of this Hoover. That is where Hoover has the advantage – they offer a nearly comparable unit in terms of cleaning for $200. That makes this vacuum a far better value.
Recommend.

Simply too simple.

from Massapequa Park
SimpliSafe is a wireless monitoring and security system that is promoted to be very easy to set up , affordable and has all the modern “ bells and whistles.” On surface, it appears to be a great idea but there are many caveats and the bells and whistles are not so extensive. First, if you are tech person and into home automation, this is not the system for you. All the sensors , parts and pieces communicate through some unknown RF protocol . That’s right – essentially a proprietary protocol for the Simplisafe product. So what does that mean? No Z-Wave, no Zigbee, no wi-fi, no bluetooth . That means no integration into switches, dimmers, lights , sensors cameras ( except Nest) nor any other home automation devices. So no Google Home, Apple Homekit nor Alexa. Obviously, this is by design and you have to set the proper expectations if you buy this system. It is designed to be an easy to install system with virtually no mobile app integration and a gateway to offer low cost home monitoring. In review -
Installation -
First you plug in the key chain remote to your computer and run through the program. I had some trouble getting it to work on Mac but eventually did get it to run .I kept getting an error of “ cannot detect keychain Check firewall…..” After unplugging it and putting it back in , it worked partially. The screen that came up got stuck on “ Please wait while settings load.” I started the process over again and everything worked fine. The installation was very straight forward, basically follow the prompts and install each component. Activating the component is just pulling the tab on the battery and it is ready. Very simple. After everything is installed, you take the keychain remote and plug it into the top of the base so it can transfer the settings. It terms of installation, Simplisafe did a great job.
One note, during the set up instructions , there is a page that is for setting up a siren ( which does not come with the basic package) but the top of the page states “Setting up keypad.” This is an obvious typo.
Pros -
Cellular connectivity.
Rechargeable battery backup in base so the functions will still work if power is lost.
Set up is very simple .
Base has a loud clear voice.
Can handle a lot of sensors.
Cons -
You have to carry a keychain remote for handheld, mobile operation. It is not water resistant. Bulky. Cheap and appears that it will not hold up. There is a cap covering the USB that can easily fall off and be lost.
Entry Sensors – very large and bulky.
Key Pad – standard back lit LCD screen that is 1/8 the size of the key pad. The pad is enormous.
Dated ,archaic look and feel of pad and sensors. Everything has the look and feel that it was made 15 years ago.
App seems useless other than setting up a Simplicam, activate monitoring or shop simple safe.
Base package has plenty of entry sensors but no glass break nor siren.
This is tough review. The product does what it says but left me wanting so much more. I installed a few sensors but did not enable the live home monitoring. I rated this on the merit of hardware side because live home monitoring is going to be pretty consistent amoung these types of companies ( most are very good and Simplisafe does have good ratings.) But today is a day of apps , integration and home automation. I can understand if they are trying to keep the security side tight by not leaving openings in their protocol but I think this product will fall by the wayside if they want to run with the big boys. The competition is simply ahead of Simplisafe in so many areas except ease of install, low cost monitoring and the built in cellular connection. If you are a techie person, you will be very dissappointed in this product. If you are not and want something simple and affordable, maybe this is the way to go. Overall, I would have to pass on the product.

Provide ample battery power for your Apple Watch with this Belkin MIXIT DuraTek charge cable. Its inner fiber liner adds strength and durability, and the 4-foot length offers plenty of leeway between the wall and your nightstand. This Belkin MIXIT DuraTek charge cable has protective insulation to shield the wires from damage as it bends and flexes.

Built well but overpriced.

The Belkin Apple Watch with Duratek Cable charger is one of the latest of Apple Watch chargers. Will it will really hold up better than the standard Apple Watch charger ? Under normal use, no it will not. Think about it, how much wear and tear does the Apple Watch charger really experience? Not much. Under more extreme conditions, yes it appears it will hold up better. So what about the functionality? It does what it is supposed, it charges. Let’s review the pros and cons :
Pros
Built well and appears durable.
At 4 feet, the cord is longer than the standard 1 meter Apple Watch charger.
Cons
The Belkin Apple Watch charger is larger in diameter and thickness than the original charger. I am not sure it will not fit in some accessories like stands but I did not test it.
It is nearly twice the price as the 1 meter Apple Watch charger. The 2 meter Apple Watch charger is still less expensive.
So , would I recommend the Belkin Apple Watch with Duratek Cable charger? No. Not because it does not do what it is supposed. It is just too expensive compared to the competition , including Apple. Belkin needs to drop the price at least 25% in order for it to be competitive.

Great, solid keyboard for the iPad Pro 10.5
on October 12, 2017
Posted by: TechnicallyCorrect
from Massapequa Park
This is the second Brydge Keyboard that I own ( the first one was for a Surface Pro 4) and this one does not dissappoint. I liked the keyboard for the Surface but did not see the advantage over the Type keyboard. Not the case here, this is a great keyboard for the Ipad Pro 10.5. The keyboard is specifically designed for iOS on the Ipad and has some well thought features that I really like. Like my first Brydge keyboard, this feels like an Apple product. Sleek all aluminum, well machined and solid.
Let’s start with the pros , features and benefits -
The keyboard has the CMD ( command) function key. You hold it down to bring up a menu of available commands that is app dependent. I found it particulary useful when using Safari. One note, if you press the CMD key and it does not do anything, there is nothing wrong. Remember it is app dependent - the commands will vary according to the app and some have no available commands.
The top row of keys is for the backlight controls, brightness, bluetooth, volume , battery level key and lock. All nice features. I partculary liked the brightness control right at your finger tips rather than going to the settings.
One problem, most of the keys stopped working mid use of the keyboard. I am not sure if something I did caused this ( I did hold the option/alt key prior) but I had to shut off the keyboard and turn it back on and everything worked again. I was not able to replicate the issue.
Dedicated Siri key. Hit it and Siri comes up. Sweet.
Close the keyboard and the Ipad goes to sleep. Open it and wakes.
As I indicated, this is a very solid product with a good weight to it ( it feels a little over a pound.) Do not be dissuaded by the weight, you need some heft to it for it to be stable.
Only adds about 1/2 inch to the Ipad.
Key board has good tactile feedback. Keys are small, the keyboard does have a about 3/8 space on each side and enough space above and below for Brydge to enlarge the key size if they want to redesign. It is not too small and you are limited to the size of Ipad Pro 10.5 so I can understand the size for the most part. .
Good snug fit of Ipad Pro. Brydge has nailed this design on their products. Just slid the iPad right onto the keyboard. Just top notch.
Hinge mechanism is tight and very well built. Opens up flat if you want.
Cons and what could make it better
Cons -

Why does Brydge not put a battery in the keyboard to add capacity? It is easily feasible with the charge port on the side of the Ipad Pro.
Also, you could add a bluetooth SSD hd or even a SD card slot to expand memory. Perhaps in the next version.
The price point is high for what you are getting ( approximately $130.) Brydge should have one of the two features I mention above at that price.
Overall, I recommend this product and give it 4 out 5 stars. If they reduced the price 20% or offered the extended battery life and storage expansion, Brydge would truly have an unbeatabe product. But if you want the highest quality keyboard that is rock solid, look no further than Brydge.

Wow, impressive fun from a simple device
on October 11, 2017
Posted by: TechnicallyCorrect
from Massapequa Park
At first glance the Merge cube looks like some child’s toy. It is completley made of foam, has raised symbols on it and no functional parts or power required. So what does it do? This is not a VR device per se, this is an augmented reality device. Essentially it maps images onto the cubed surface in which you can interact with. Think of the blue or green screen you have hopefully heard of that is in movies. Now think of a cube covered in that that has images projected onto it. You do have to view it through a tablet or through the Merge VR goggles but this really works well. Once set up , you can do all types of cools things. You can pick up the cube and move it around to look at all sides of the image ( such as looking at every angle of a skull or organ – the app is Mr. Body) or interact with something that appears to be in your room ( there is a box of cartoon fireworks that you can pick up and make it shoot fireworks.) There a decent amount of apps and games ( Tilt ball is good.) I recently reviewd the Merge VR goggles and was not overly impressed with the experience. The cube changes that, it makes the Merge VR goggles much more fun. With that said, I see something more here. This is the beginning of a game changer, there are a myriad of applications in the real world – remote teaching or medical assistance. Imagine taking a high detailed scan of a heart, transmitting the data remotely to a more advances cube like item , mapping the data to it so a remote surgeon can explore the heart. Obviously , there is more to it but there is really something here with this $15 “toy.”
If I had used the cube earlier with Merge VR goggles, I would have rated it higher. Merge, if you are reading this, start packaging the cube with the goggles immediately. It will help sell them . Overall , this Merge cube was fun and interesting. I would recommend it to anyone who gets the Merge VR goggles.

They work but set proper expectations
on October 10, 2017
Posted by: TechnicallyCorrect
from Massapequa Park
This is my first use of a VR device. I did not have a lot of hope for a $60 pair of VR googles but gave it a try with Merge. Before I get into the funcationality, let’s talk about the the construction and comfort. I was very leary the googles were almost made entirely of foam. But they seem relatively solid and it is not a complicated design. The real question is will they hold up but only time will tell. In terms of comfort, that is where Merge nailed it. They are light, fit well and comfortable. It makes sense why they used foam , light weight and usuable ( although not as light as the some of the competition.) Overall, I liked the fit and weight.
The instructions for use were confusing to me at first , I kept looking for a Merge app because the box indicated it was in the Play Store. There are no specific Merge apps, there are apps designed to work with Merge VR headsets. Go to the Merge website and they will point you to the Merge recommended apps. There are not a lot of apps but they work reasonable well. The apps vary in quality and some are entertaining. However, the few that I tried all seem like novelties and I got bored pretty fast. The clarity is okay and will vary by the app and how your set the lenses. The adjustment of lenses works great and is very easy. The reality is ( get it – hehe) that this is a toy and the gimmick wears off pretty fast. I think the target audience should be kids under 12. This makes sense since this is $60 or less. I can tell you that VR apps are real battery drains so make sure you have a full charge. I have a Google Pixel XL and it lost nearly 1% per minute.
So do I recommend them, yes and no. It depends on your expectations. If you are looking for a toy that you do not mind that it will be discarded in a year – then yes. If you are looking for a high resolution fully funtional VR gear – then no. Remember , this is $60 so set the appropriate expectation and think about who it is for.

Could have been good but software is weak.
on October 9, 2017
Posted by: TechnicallyCorrect
from Massapequa Park
I have installed and used many different IP security cams – Interlogix, Samsung, and Arlo. All have their set up quirks, some worse than others, and D-Link is not exception. The reality is that D-Link was the worst of the bunch. The software is just poor. First I tried Android. I loaded up the software, made sure the phone and cameras were on the same network and started the set up process. D-Link was smart and put a QR code on the bottom to scan and assist the set up of the camera. The problem is the app would not discover the camera and you cannot get past the section to set up an account unless the software can discover the camera. I tried resetting the phone ( Google Pixel XL,) reinstalling the software, trying a second camera. Nothing worked. Next ,I tried manually entering the camera info with the PIN ( on the bottom of the camera) and still nothing. All of this was within 3 feet line of site to the router. After several days I gave up and tried running the set up on a 2017 Ipad Pro. Surprisingly, everything set up as described. However, the cameras would not show video and there was an error code. I restarted the app and Ipad and still nothing. Very frustrating. I figured I would sign into the app on my Android just to see what would happen and , surprisingly, both cameras appeared on the Android. Two days later a D-Link rep called me and I told him about the trouble I was having and he asked me to walk him through steps and look up the error code on the Ipad. When I turned the Ipad on and opended the app, everything was working. Very strange. The rep wanted me to uninstall everything and see if I could recreate the issue but I did not have the time. These issues seem to be all software related. Once everything was set up, the cameras worked very well. The video was crisp and clear. On the home network there is little to no latency. Off network there is a slight bit more latency but that is probably because it is on 4G. I mention latency because Samsung and Arlo showed more latency and they are far more expensive. When I first looked at the software and the box, there was several mentions of cloud use. That gave me the impression that you could record video in the cloud. That is not yet the case, it appears you can only record to the mobile device you are on. It does look like the web access mydlink.com will be eventually set up to record but for now, you are stuck recording to mobile devices. There is no SD card option as well so if you want to record the event, you must manually do it from your mobile device. Again, I can see D-Link changing this but not now. For the mydlink lite App, it is has no other functions except running the camera and some basic settings. You cannot set triggers , change the settings per camera ( it is a global setting for all connected cameras) and really not much else. Too basic. I downloaded the mydlink Home App but there was not much I could do with that as well and it caused the mydlink lite app to crash. Let’s review the pros and cons
Pros:
- 2 cameras for less than the price of one camera form the competition
- Small and unobtrusive
- Clear picture and audio with low latency.
- Night vision is excellent as well.
- Rock solid once installed. No drop outs.
- No base or hub required
Cons:
- Set up is hit or miss.
- Poor software. No ready for prime time.
- No SD card nor cloud recording.
- Web based platform cuts off some of the picture.
- Web based plug in for Safari fails to install. Chrome works fine.
- No wide angle
In summary, remember that these are $60 cameras ( 2 for $120) that do mostly what the competition does. Is this in the same ball park as Arlo or Samsung. No , not close. However, brands like Arlo are 2.5 times the price. To me , it looks like DLink was shooting for a specifc price point but sacrificed on the software side. That is a good thing. Hardware inadequacies you cannot fix, software is fluid and can always be updated. At this point I am neutral on the product but cannot recommend it until the software gets better.

Not ready for prime time.
on October 8, 2017
Posted by: TechnicallyCorrect
from Massapequa Park
I received two Mini Sphero’s about a week ago. They are mini but built relatively solid. The problem is they do not work. They light up nicely but that is about it. I first charged the Spheros fully, installed the software on my Google Pixel XL , ran the software , unplugged the Sphero and gave it two taps. It appeared to go into pairing mode and apparantly paired with my phone. I was running the app at the time and it could not connect to the Sphero. The app just kept searching for it even though the Sphero Mini was connected to my phone. I made multiple attempts. After doing some research on troubleshooting on the Sphero website, I uninstalled the software forgot the device in bluetooth settings, restarted my phone and reset the Sphero by putting it back in the charger. I repeated the whole process and still could not get Sphero Mini to connect. I thought there was something wrong with the Sphero Mini itself so I tried the second Sphero Mini that was sent to me, same result. Then I thought there was something up with phone so I uninstalled the app again, forgot the devices in bluetooth settings and decided to try on my 2017 Ipad Pro. The devices would not go into pairing mode and my Ipad did not even see them in the bluetooth setting. I repeated the process mutltiple times on both devices and still had no luck. This should not be difficult, I followed the instructions to the letter and both devices are fully compatible with Spheros. The only thing the Spheros do when unplugged is is glow red and eventually time out and shut down. When they shut down, they do not wake back up. Sorry Sphero, this was not a good experience and I should not have to open a service ticket on a toy.

Better than most more expensive vacuums
on September 26, 2017
Posted by: TechnicallyCorrect
from Massapequa Park
I’ve always found the Shark products to be a mixed bag, some good and some bad. In many cases it is reflective of the price range of the Shark product, you get what you pay for. The APEX DuoClean AX951 Bagless Upright is at the upper end of the Shark price range and it does not dissapoint. I currenty own a high end Sebo canister product that is 3 times the price of the Shark AX951 and I use it as the baseline in comparing vacuums. Putting aside everything but the cleaning power of the power brush, the Shark performs the same if not better than the Sebo and other units on the market . I use the Sebo once a week and use a Neato every day. I used the Shark after using my other vacuums and the amount of dirt that was in the Shark canister after vacuuming my rug was surprising. Sharks Duo clean system truly works . It performs as good if not better than every high end vacuum I have had . Basically there is two power heads that deep clean the carpet and pick everything up. There are some pitfalls with the unit but in terms of sheer cleaning power on rugs, there are probably none better regardless of price range.
Pros
Accessories - Shark really put some thought in the accessory tools. The anti-allergen dust brush gets into places I could not reach with my other vacuums. It is long , flat and can be adjusted to different angles. Of similar design is the MultiFlex tool for getting under appliances. It is over 3 feet long and designed to fit under stoves and other appliances. What a great idea, it was an immediate success. Two great ideas by Shark, I am surprised other manufacturers have not copied it already.
Lights, lights lights – There are two LED lights in the power brush head and lights in the handle when using accessory cleaning. Very nice touch and handy.
Sound – this is always a subjective item but the sound was much better than I thought. Nothing is as quiet as a high end unit but the Shark AX951 was surprisingly good. Better than the competitors in this price range.
Manuverability Upright mode – The unit takes some getting used to and feels unbalanced at first. After using it for while, you understand the way the unit swivels and how the weight is centered and everything manuvers quiet well.
Cansiter / Powerhead separation – you remove the canister from the power head but still use the powerhead , main wand and handle. This enables you to get the brush head under tight spaces. Another great design idea, it really worked well to get under TV’s stands and similar.
Bagless – the unit does not require bags and the design is very easy to empty the canister
Dust and dirt removal – as stated above, the AX951 did a great job for cleaning carpet. In fact, an amazing job. The two brush head system is a home run. One of the problem of less expensive vaccuums is they can recirculate the dust after it has been vacuumed into the unit. Not the AX951, Shark’s filtration system works very well.
Cons
Assembly – this is a slight criticism . When you spend north of $400, it would be nice if the unit came fully assembled or mostly assembled. It was not hard to put together but it gave the appearance of a cheaper unit because all the parts were separate. I understand some of the need to fit it in the box but there is a better way.
The hose is not long enough and too tighly coiled. It makes it difficult to reach things when the removing the handle for accessory cleaning. Also, it tends to pull the unit and can knock it over ( particulary if you have remvoed the canister.
Too much plastic. Plastic is not bad thing, there is a place for it. However there is virtually no metal on this unit and I question how well it will hold up. That is pure conjecture but I would like to see some higher quality components this machine.
Manuverability canister carry mode – uggh, this I did not like. You can detached the canister from the main power wand and brush and carry the canister while using the handle and accessories. This is fine if you use one hand to carry the canister and one to clean. If you set the canister down, it will fall over everytime you pull on the hose. There is just not enough weight to the canister the the hose is too tighly wound.
Some of the cons mentioned above are not oversights by Shark. It is the necessity of the design to incorporate new and better features into an upright vacuum. The AX951 is fanstastic in many respects and only has a few short comings. If Shark is reading this, they should take note and make a high end unit. Something even quieter, something made with more metal and maybe a bit more power. People will pay more for higher end features.
Regardless, I completely recommend the APEX DuoClean AX951. This is the best Shark product I have ever tried and give it 4 out of 5 stars. It does lose a point for the canister carry mode and a lot of plastic but otherwise, I really think Shark did a great job on this vacuum. If you are looking for a vacuum to clean carpet better than anyone else, look no further.

The DeLonghi FH1163 Multifry the Multicooker is a versatile device that does what it is designed to do and does it well. The machine features a mixing paddle the mixes the food as it fries/cooks. As a result, the food comes out very evenly cooked. . As the title of the of product states, this is a multicooker, not just a fryer. You can cook cakes, vegetables and even pizza. It will fry , saute, bake , grill and roast like a high quality convection toaster oven. I cooked some fries and some chicken (separately.) The chicken was juicy and nicely done. The fries took some time to get used of a a proper cooking time but they were good as well. Both took a long time to cook, far longer than traditional frying. Let's take a look at the pros and cons :
Pros -
Versatile Can cook multiple types of foods.
Heavy in a good way – built heavy duty.
Even cooking.
High quality.
Easy to clean and controls are straight forward.
Cons
Huge. The unit is quite large and takes up a lot of counter space. I know it designed to accommodate a large amount of food but for 1 to 2 people, this is gigantic.
Sound. I know frying in general in not quiet but this uses very little oil so the sound is not from the frying but the machine itself. It is the fan and paddle sound, it is just loud.
It took al long time to cook steak fries I made from scratch and fried chicken cutlet took a longer time as well. It was a first try but I had trouble getting it to cook right. I guess I was impatient but it seemed a long time to cook ( about 30 minutes for the fries. )
So the DeLonghi FH1163 Multifry is a well thought out and quality machine . It does what it is supposed to and does it well. The big question is what is the point? Yes, if you are frying foods it use far less oil and makes the food healthier. But why? Are you going to cook fried foods that oftenthat you need a special machine to make it healthier? Or is more likely that you would just prefer to put oil in a pan and cook the traditional frying method. The DeLonghi FH1163 Multifry enables you to cook a variety of foods beyond just frying but then again – do you need a special machine to do that when you have a stove , toaster oven and microwave? For me the answer is no but that is a personal preference. If your existing cooking appliances are less than stellar and you are looking for an all in one package that does cook well, then this might be for you. I am giving this 4 stars but it is hard to recommend because I am not sure I see the point. Again, remember that is a personal preference; the machine itself is good quality and does exactly what it was designed to do.

HDMI upgrade?

I currently am running my HD TV's with HDMI connections made about five years ago. Will those cables be able to support this TV or are there newer cables that must be used on these 3-D 4-K models?
The short answer is maybe. There are 4 types of HDMI cables ( for the most part.) High-speed with or without Ethernet and or without Ethernet . For 4k televisions, you should use high speed only ( it does not matter whether they are ethernet capable.) High speed cables have been around for over 5 years so you may already have them. If you do need to buy new cables, go for the least expensive high speed cables . There is no difference in performance between a $5 high speed cable and $100 Monster cable ( up to about 20 feet.)
