I'll start off by saying that I am a fan of soundbars for certain applications. Secondary systems, bedrooms, beginners in HT etc. Most do a decent 2.1 or 3.1 job. However, for a true HT experience I'm sure most would agree that they simply fall short. In my situation, I was replacing a full HT setup as we were doing some remodeling. My wife wanted a much cleaner look without speakers everywhere. To add we have a large room with hardwood floors and a finished basement so we could not run wires under or around anything with ease. I was contemplating going wireless with a sub and rears until I saw this Yamaha that was coming out. I waited patiently for it's release and then waited to hear some initial reviews. I would agree with 99% of them. While nothing fully replicates having actual rear and ceiling speakers, this thing comes amazingly close and certainly close enough to satisfy the vast majority. Our room is 23 feet long with 14 foot vaulted ceilings. I was worried this would create issues where the Yamaha couldn't hold up. It absolutely amazed me after doing the 3 minute initial setup. A sub is a must. Don't kid yourself, a sub is a must in any HT setup. While some may be sticker shocked, the power and build quality (and sound quality) justify the price to me. This thing gets very loud and has very clean sound. The HDR passthrough has an easy workaround as the Samsung 4k Bluray player has 2 HDMI outputs. One just for sound to go to the soundbar and one to run straight to the TV. The Atmos speakers are very convincing as well. All in all I couldn't be happier with the outcome of this and I would highly recommend this unit to anyone looking for a cleaner simpler solution.
