The RZA loves martial arts films, and I give him props for that. It's just that this one is pretty bad. Russell Crowe must have been signed so the movie had a "name" actor. Unfortunately his "Gladiator" days are a thousand donuts behind him. The movie just sort of trundles along and doesn't so much climax as just runs out of characters to kill.
This isn't the Jackie Chan you remember from years ago. After all those insane stunts, he's lucky to be able to walk, let alone move as well as he still does. Anyway, the story is just average, and Jackie can no longer save average scripts. Mildly recommended since the price won't leave you with much buyer's remorse.
This is a good superhero movie. With a well built guy and girl in tight costumes, everyone should be visually happy. Of course any superhero movie requires suspension of disbelief, but in this one you really have to swallow hard. Especially near the end when (SPOILER ALERT) you have to believe that not only did a terrorist group infiltrate scores of agents into a super secret spy organization, they got most of them assigned to the same ship. But other than that...
POW! The Caped Crusader and the Boy Wonder fight crime in Gotham City in this campy version of Bob Kane's comic strip that first appeared in 1939. This release contains every episode from the third season of this classic 1960s series.
The series was running out of steam after two seasons, and to get renewed the producers made some changes. They brought in lovely Yvonne Craig as Batgirl, which definitely worked. And they abandoned the two part episodes for mostly single and occasionally three part stories - which really didn't work. But good and not so good changes didn't matter. The series ended after this season. In addition to all of the television stuff, this collection includes visits to obsessed Batman collectors and discussions with some of the actors and people from DC Comics. It's a good value collection.
This superhero drama follows Central City forensic scientist Barry Allen (Grant Gustin), who is given the power to move at lightning-quick speeds after a freak accident at a particle accelerator facility. As a man who has always had a propensity for helping others and doing good deeds, Allen uses his newfound gifts to fight crime and evildoers.
Among the glut of superhero television shows, "The Flash" stands out by not joining the "dark" parade. Not everyone dresses in black and gray. The villains don't always seem to be winning. There aren't as many deaths. (And consequently they are more meaningful.) It's more like a real superhero comic book - at least what they used to be. The writers and producers also add little bits that fans of the comic will appreciate but which don't hurt the enjoyment of the casual viewer. In short, it's a good time. The DVDs also have enough extras with them to keep almost anyone happy and make you sure you're getting good value. All in all, a very nice product.
This box set showcases the range of blue-eyed man's man Steve McQueen by presenting four of his best films. Included here are Bullitt, Papillon, The Cincinnati Kid, and The Getaway.
None of these are Steve McQueen's very best, but "Bullitt" and "Getaway" deliver the tough, alpha male testosterone you expect from him. The other two movies are lighter on the action and are both a bit too long, but show he could hold his own with some very good actors. All in all, a very good value package.
This set of four classic Hollywood westerns includes Shane, Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Sam Peckinpah's The Wild Bunch, and John Ford's The Searchers.
This is a must-buy for any fan of the Western genre who doesn't already own these movies - three of them, anyway.. "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" is carried by the star power of Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas. It's not great, but it's good. The other 3 movies - "Shane," "The Wild Bunch," and "The Searchers" - are all magnificent films and would be on almost every "top ten" Western list ever compiled. Only small complaint is that they're all stacked on the same spindle in the box. It would have been nice to have them mounted apart from one another.
This dark and deadly release from the classic David Lynch directed mystery series Twin Peaks captures the complete series, plus the movie Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, following the story of a small town murder that reveals the disturbing undercurrents of the seemingly idyllic community.
Like later shows (especially "Lost") which it heavily influenced, "Twin Peaks" could be both a lot of intriguing fun and also incredibly irritating. Just as with "Lost," the "Peaks" creators found it much easier to set up all sorts of terrific mysteries than to solve them. Some people like me like to have answers; others are more interested in the questions. When it was cancelled after just two seasons, I hated that there was no conclusion. But since it's slated to come back, I thought it was time to look at it again. I'm not expecting many loose ends to be tied up. With "Twin Peaks" the best thing to do is to just enjoy the mood, music, and general weirdness, and not to worry about getting a satisfying wrap-up.
