The Canyons A spoiled L.A. trust-fund kid discovers that his actress girlfriend is having a fling with her ex-flame, and subjects them both to a series of twisted mind games that spiral out of control in this erotically charged neo-noir thriller from director Paul Schrader and writer Bret Easton Ellis. In order to keep his trust fund intact and his influential father out of his business, bored rich kid Christian (real-life porn star James Deen) finances an independent horror film, with his assistant Gina (Amanda Brooks) serving as producer. Christian's girlfriend Tara (Lindsay Lohan), a former aspiring actress, is assisting with casting duties when her former boyfriend Ryan (Nolan Funk) emerges as the frontrunner to star in the film. At first Christian and Gina fail to recognize the romantic spark between Tara and Ryan -- the lusty remnants of a passionate fling from three years ago. But eventually, sleuthing Christian rightly discerns that Tara has taken him for a fool, and that the two former lovers are conducting an affair right under his nose. Driven by an insatiable thirst for vengeance, controlling Christian soon begins subconsciously tormenting them both until the psychological suffering becomes too great to bear, and the situation erupts into violence. On The Road Jack Kerouac's seminal pseudo-autobiography finally heads to the big screen thanks to director Walter Salles Jr. (The Motorcycle Diaries) and executive producer Francis Ford Coppola. The tale is semi-based on the author's trips across America, with fiction intertwining with reportedly real events and people met along the way. The starring cast includes Kristen Stewart, Sam Riley, and Kirsten Dunst. José Rivera provides the adaptation.

A somewhat disappointing DVD release, MGM/UA's The Princess Bride provides nothing extra beyond a theatrical trailer -- no commentary, no featurettes, not even cast and crew biography pages. The film is presented in both widescreen (1.85:1 letterboxed, non-anamorphic) and full-frame formats. The image is nice and clear, with beautiful, vivid colors and no evidence of artifacts such as shimmering or edge enhancement. There is some slight indication of grain and a touch of softness from time to time, which may be more indicative of the age of the film than the quality of the transfer. The print used for the transfer also has some very infrequent speckles and marks, but overall the transfer is quite watchable. The English audio track is presented as Dolby 5.1, though this seems to be little more than a simple transfer of the original Dolby Surround mix, rather than a remix, and as such it is fairly ordinary. Surrounds are hardly called into play, and most of the directional work in the front is in Mark Knopfler's music. Dialogue ranges from clear to somewhat muddy, depending on scene and actor. There is also a Spanish audio track, in mono. This has a terribly compressed sound to it, with brittle-sounding dialogue recording, a variable voice cast, and highly inadequate matching. Subtitles are available in French and Spanish. The trailer is presented full-screen, and mastered from a very bad print. The main DVD menu is animated, with music. There are rumors of an improved edition of this disc, but for now this will have to do.
