Powerful outdoor speaker - not as great indoors
on April 18, 2019

I’m a big fan of Sony bluetooth speakers. I like the Extra Bass and I am one of the people who quite enjoy the lighting effects that are available so adding this to the line-up was nice.
First off, this thing is massive. It is much bigger than it appears in photos and is probably taller than a 3 year old.
Setup was super simple using my iPhone and pairing it to multiple devices was no issue.
Like I said, I am a big fan of the Extra Bass feature on Sony speakers but this one comes with a slight caveat - I wouldn’t recommend using the the Extra Bass indoors. It works well outdoors but when confined indoors, the sound can come off as a little muddled.
Other than pairing with a bluetooth connected device, you also have the option of using a USB stick but the awesome thing about this speaker is that you also have a tuner and it also has a built-in antenna.
Overall this is a great speaker but I would definitely recommend it only for large spaces or outdoor use as even something like the XB40 can fill up a large room; alternatively the XB501G is a good alternative with Google Assistant built-in.

Save on cable TV but also nice to have as a backup
on April 1, 2019

This antenna is a good alternative to paying the high cost of cable TV but another nice thing about this antenna is it provides a backup solution in case your cable TV were to go out.
Placement with this antenna is key. Behind my TV next to a wall, it wasn't that great. Closer to a window will be more ideal and after playing around with a few positions, I was able to get about a dozen channels, mostly in 1080.
Most of the stations were about 40-50 miles away and they came in clear for me so although I could not attest to the actual 65 mile range, it did the job well for me.

Incredibly solid construction!

Ya, we're just talking about a lightning cable, but dang, this thing is built well.
The braided cable is a bit thicker than most, but that lends to the durability. Quite flexible, does not get tangled and knotted like non-braided cables - just darn good.
Connections on each end are very solid as well and there is very little risk of damaging the connections due to bending.
Also comes with a very nice (maybe a little overkill) leather (maybe synthetic) cord wrap that is convenient with a little button closure.
If you're looking for the nicest lightning cable around, this very well could be it.

Great Looks and Wonderful Sound with a few quirks
on March 19, 2019

The Marshall Stanmore II is an attractive bluetooth speaker that looks much different than nearly anything else on the market. It has wonderful sound quality, with a rich, organic sound. Very balanced and has a lot of depth.
The physical dials and controls on top are great to see and makes it easy to change settings and they even put the auxiliary audio input right on top which makes it easy to access rather than how a lot of speakers have them located on the back of the unit.
However, I found that the bass and treble controls don’t affect the sound profile a whole lot. But in all fairness, the sound profile out of the box is quite pleasant - probably one of the nicest I’ve heard.
One more thing is that the volume seems a bit finicky, especially if you have more than one device connected to it. I experienced a few instances where the volume would suddenly increase. This was when I was paired to just one device but when 2 devices are paired to it, let’s say an iPad and an iPhone, this occurred more often.
A great speaker overall with some wonderful sound quality.

All-in-one Router/Alexa/Spotify Solution!
on March 4, 2019

First off, I think this is probably one of the more attractive routers out there - being that it is also a smart speaker, it has a better design than a typical router since it will most likely be out in the open.
I would almost classify it more as a smart speaker with a router built-in than the other way around since it is actually attractive enough to have in your living area.
However, as a router, it works well. Easy setup using the Asus Router app and was up and running within about 5 minutes. Coverage was good even without external antennas and it covered my 1300 square foot townhome without any weak signals.
As a speaker it was decent - I would put it slightly below the quality/volume/bass response of something like a UE Boom. Don't expect something thumpy but it does have good sound quality that you can listen to for hours.
As an Alexa it worked flawlessly being able to perform all the typical Amazon Alexa functions that you would expect.
Great product!!

SUPER easy setup. Good coverage.
on February 15, 2019

I've owned many Linksys products in the past and they have all been fairly easy to set up, but this MR8300 was quite the breeze.
Rather than having to set it up using a hardwire connection, you'll use a Linksys app on your phone and the setup took a matter of about 5 minutes, mostly just the start up time of the different pieces of hardware.
Even though this is a more traditional looking router with external antennas, ethernet ports on the back as well as a USB 3.0 port for attaching things like a hard drive for shared storage, it does also offer mesh technology which allows your wifi signal to be extended for broader coverage.
Again, setup of the additional node was dirt-simple using the app and I was able to get a strong wifi signal across my 2400 square foot, 3 story house, which is very compartmentalized, meaning that my house is split up into a lot of different sections separated by walls and even in my basement that did not have a node, I still had a strong signal.

Microwaving has evolved! When it comes to everything you expect in a microwave, nothing compares with the defrosting, cooking, and reheating capability of the new Cyclonic Wave. At every temperature level, Cyclonic Wave circulates heat in precision, ultra-efficient 3D waves for easier, more versatile food preparation, even with denser, more complex food textures. Attractive, Heats up fast, buttons could be better
on January 30, 2019
Posted by: gwtbike
from Fort Collins, CO
I've had this for about a month now and it's worked great, although there is a slight learning curve in regards to the operation.
This is a really attractive microwave. I never thought in my life I'd be saying something like that. It has a really large interior and could shove some gigantic amounts of food in there.
However, it is big. That can be great for some, not so great for others. Just keep that in mind.
In regards to heating up food, the only comparison I have is with a 10-year old microwave and it heated up food I'd say about 20-30% faster which is a good improvement.
The buttons are where I think there could be some improvement as they are all just icons and can be a little confusing - so it's a good idea to read through the manual thoroughly to understand what it can do.
It's not a cheap unit either so that would be my other bit of feedback.
But still, a great microwave. Does it's job and works great if you're OK with less-than-ideal usability.

The Dyson Pure Hot + Cool is the only purifying heater + fan to clean a whole room properly. To simultaneously purify and heat a whole room properly, the Dyson Pure Hot+CoolTM purifying heater + fan goes beyond standard tests by automatically sensing pollution, capturing ultrafine pollutants, and projecting purified and heater air using Air MultiplierTM technology. It is the only purifying heater + fan designed and tested to do this.¹

Space-saver for year-round use!
on January 22, 2019
Posted by: gwtbike

The number one thing I like about it is that it never has to leave my living room regardless of the season not only because it provides both heating and cooling but also that it looks so darn good. Then you add the fact that it's an air-purifier is a huge bonus.
I also really like the fact that this is a blade-less unit where there are no moving parts. That also probably aids in creating a broader flow of air than a channel of air like most fans.
Noise: It is VERY quiet at the lower speeds (it has 10 speeds) but level 10 is very noticeable but not annoying. At it's lower settings it's hardly noticeable so it's easy to sleep with it running.
I also like that it has 5 different settings for oscillation from everything from no oscillation to rotating completely and it will still oscillate even when tilted, which it can do.
The air purification works well and my significant other and myself have sensitive noses so we are pretty sensitive to smells. I cook fish inside the house quite a bit and it removes almost all of the smell.
Do note that air flow is in both directions except for heating, where it only comes out of one side, but I can probably understand this since it's not like a lot of people would put this in the middle of a room. So in the heating situation it could be hazardous.
But overall, this thing is kind of nuts at how good it is - it's not cheap, like other Dyson products, but being a long-time owner of a Dyson vacuum, I can say that they do last a long time.

Great looking trimmer that does a great job
on January 8, 2019
Posted by: gwtbike

This trimmer does exactly what it was designed to do providing a nice, clean trim. I used it on both facial hair as well as the top of my head and it worked well for both.
The shape and design of the trimmer is top-notch - something that looks nice even if it’s out on your bathroom counter. The shape is ergonomic and fits nicely in the hand.
The size is nice as it’s big enough to use confidently but it’s small enough that you can travel with it as well.
It comes with 3 different guards to provide different cutting length options all the way from 0.4mm to 20mm. It also has a dial or “zoom wheel” as they call it to fine-tune the cutting length which is actually displayed and illuminated when you turn the device on. The zoom wheel works well and has plenty of grip even while using it with wet hands.
Although the design of the trimmer itself is very sleek, I wish it came with a charging stand for better presentation while it’s charging. The charging cable is nice and long and the plug itself is short in height so it does not block other outlets.
It takes about an hour to charge from fully drained and it says it is claimed for 100 minutes of use. I didn’t time this exactly but I easily got 2 weeks out of it with daily use.
Overall this is a great trimmer.

Best Jaybirds yet - srsly
on December 20, 2018
Posted by: gwtbike
from Fort Collins, CO
I've been a long-time fan of Jaybird headphones, but they haven't really come out with anything significant in a few years.
The Tarah Pro is actually the first truly new pair of Jaybird headphones that they have come out since the Freedoms.
There are 2 things that I especially like about them:
The braided cord is really nice where it doesn't stick to your skin when your skin is sweaty. Plus, they just don't get tangled.
Second would be the 14 hour battery life. This is HUGE and I got about 12-13 hours out of them and I like to listen to my music at high volumes.
But there are also some other things like the magnetic charging clip which is convenient HOWEVER, once again, Jaybird uses a different charging solution for every single pair of headphones that they have come out with. I would love to be able to use some of my older charging cables and not have to have one distinctive charger for each set that I own. Still though, I won't dock it a star for this since not sure many people own numerous pairs of Jaybirds, but maybe I am wrong.
In terms of fit, the "eargels" as they call them are really nice - now, I was never really a fan of the foam eartips and always preferred silicon so these worked great for me.
Overall, these ARE a truly new pair of Jaybird headphones and I think they did a great job with them.
