Radenso DS1 - Radar Detector
The Radenso DS1 in my opinion is a well designed and well built radar detector with a large set of programmable features.
The DS1 currently supports six radar bands including the K and Ka bands used in the US. It is also capable of detecting Laser speed sensors. The DS1 also has a GPS receiver that can be used to establish vehicle location, heading and speed. The GPS can also be used with frequently used routes to reduce false detections.
I have only had three days to use the DS1 in our Jeep while going around town on errands. The city uses mobile radar speed detectors to provide reminders and speed cautions on streets In some residential areas. So far I have encountered only these systems which have their radar mounted higher than a radar gun in a police car. The DS1 detects radar speed caution devices at ranges around a mile .
The radar detector I had many years ago was much simpler just an on/off switch and a volume control. I am using the DS1 to provide warnings about traffic congestion associated with police speed traps with today's increasingly frustrated drivers. So far the documentation and user manual has been of very limited use. Even adding several tech notes from the manufacturer's website the information to program the possible capabilities of the DS1 is hard to find. A call to the support help line appears likely in the future.

Microsoft Surface GO 3 Pentium Gold 8 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD w/ Windows 11 S.
Based on my previous experience with tablet screen keyboards Android, Windows Surface and Chromebook tablets for me adding a Bluetooth or detachable hardware keyboard was a very good decision. While I waited for the Surface Go 3 to arrive I ordered a Microsoft Surface Go Signature Type cover and used it during the research for this review.
When the Surface GO 3 was unpacked I was impressed with the build quality. The chassis is aluminum with plastic around the power and volume controls and the front and rear cameras with only a hairline space between metal and plastic. The weight of the 10.5 inch Surface GO 3 at about 19 oz. is heavier than the 10.1-10.5 inch Android tablets my family has but is a couple oz. lighter than the 11 inch Android tablets I see entering the market. My Surface GO 3 Windows 11 S configuration after a number of Windows updates with the default applications installed and Netflix and Hulu streaming entertainment apps has 83.2GB of the 128 GB SSD drive remaining free.

On my system with the power mode set at the Windows 11 “recommended” setting battery drain is 10% an hour while web streaming video from Hulu or Netflix. This setting yields 8 hours of runtime until “battery saver mode” engages at the 20% battery level. When the Surface is performing other tasks like “system updates” judging from the way the tablet warms up compared to streaming video battery drain is significantly faster.
My Surface GO 3 still has it’s Windows 11 in the S configuration so far I have been very satisfied with the applications available in the S version although there is a learning curve to the unfamiliar applications.
I am impressed with the design, quality and lightweight of the Surface GO 3 and with all the available accessories available for it. But each component is expensive and as you add accessories and approach the functionality of a laptop you may find you have spent more than a larger and heavier but more capable laptop costs.
I recommend the Microsoft Surface GO 3 to my friends and relatives.

Delightful compact bluetooth earbud package
on September 27, 2021
Posted by: rockhunter

I am delighted with the JLab GO Air POP bluetooth earbuds and case. I use the earbuds with an Android Tablet for video entertainment from online streaming services. I have another older bluetooth earbud system with the same mix of components: two earbuds and a case charger but all much larger in size
The JLab GO Air POP small compact size is an almost perfect match for the portability of the tablet and its case. Also the significantly smaller earbuds fit and stay in my ears much better than the earbuds on the larger older bluetooth earbud system. The smaller earbuds of the JLab GO Air POP make it quite difficult to get the small smooth surface earbuds out of the case/charger. I cut two small ¼ inch wide by 1 inch long strips of cloth tape putting one piece of tape on the top edge of each earbud as shown in the picture and giving a textured surface instead of a polished one to grasp when removing an earbud frome the case/charger. So far this has alleviated the problem of getting the earbuds out of the case/charger. If you use this method just be sure you don’t cover the indicator LED on each earbud.
The earbuds paired quickly with my android tablet sound quality seems quite good.
I recommend this bluetooth earbud package.

Home, Business, School, or Gaming Laptop

The first impression I had when I unpackaged the Dell XPS was that the construction was very solid. I did not detect any flex at all in the case. The second thing that struck me was this wasn’t my old Windows laptop by any means; it's the first Windows laptop I have had that was charged via a USB C port and had Thunderbolt 4 ports.
The Dell XPS is fast. It boots up 40 percent faster than my three year old Pentium core I7, 16 GB, 15,6 inch laptop. It also has better battery life, on simple web browsing tasks. The three year old laptop has about 4,5 hours of battery life. The newer Dell XPS has a little over 7 hours doing the same type of work.
I have only had the Dell XPS up and running for 4 days now and unlike the older laptop it does not have a touch screen so some games that used the touch screen now are played with the touchpad and the shift definitely feels a little a little odd at first. Also the Dell XPS has a different mix of IO ports then the older laptop one USB C and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. The dongle provided by Dell with the Dell XPS adds to the XPS the same USB, HDMI ports that the older laptop has, in addition to Thunderbolt. But dongles or interface docks are necessary and may complicate use.
The Dell XPS looks like it would make a fine home, business, school, or gaming laptop. I recommend the Dell XPS

Didn't work well in our home
on May 3, 2021

Our household has used robot vacuums for over a decade but we have never had a robot mop until now. The robot vacuums we had vacuumed in a quasi random crisscross pattern which causes them to often cross over many of the same areas of floor several times. But the random looking pattern also gets the robot vacuum around obstacles and furniture to vacuum an entire room.
Unfortunately half of the hard floor rooms in our home have oblique angles at one or more walls in the rooms with hard floors or hard fixed objects in the room like a countertop work area island in the kitchen or both. These are often navigation challenges for the Spinwave which wants to vacuum or mop in a pattern of straight lines from one wall to an opposite wall and back to the first wall with a small overlap between passes. I think that the Spinwave needs the addition of light beam virtual walls as our robot vacuums have employed to enable the Spinwave to navigate to areas that are blind areas to it’s normal algorithm. Also the hard floor areas in our house are not all connected by hard floor pathways and require moving the Spinwave from one hard floor room to another by hand and the addition of a carrying handle would be a welcome addition.
Based on the usage issues I encountered in using the Spinwave in our home I don’t find it at all labor saving and don’t recommend it, other people with different floor plans may find it works much better for them.

Worth consideration if you are getting a Keyboard
on December 30, 2020

The Dell Dell Multi-device Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Combo KM7120W is a very sophisticated add-on with potential for use in a multi-computer environment. The KM7120W supports Keyboard and smart tabs across Windows, Chrome, Android, Mac, Linux operating systems. It has one WiFi link with USB WiFi dongle and two bluetooth links available for connection to computer systems. In my case the WiFi dongle and connection will be used with my all-in-one desktop Windows PC.
The keyboard is about three inches narrower than the keyboard that came with my all-in-one desktop PC so there will be a process of learning the keyboard layout before I will be fully comfortable with it. The build quality on the KM7120W seems a little nicer and the key touch is smoother than the keyboard that came with my desktop. I have paired the KM7120W with an android tablet, a Windows tablet and where a keyboard is an add-on to a device although usually larger in size than a tablet keyboard I think the KM7120W might often deserve consideration when a keyboard case or plain portable bluetooth keyboard case is purchased.
I have used the KM7120W for three days now and the major issue I have encountered is the limited documentation that came with the keyboard. The Quick Start diagram and Regulatory information fall short, the Dell Multi-device Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Combo KM7120W User’s Guide available online fill in the voids to pairing your Windows, Chrome, Android, Mac, Linux computer and keyboard.
I recommend considering the KM7120W to my friends and relations who are buying a keyboard

HP - ENVY x360 2-in-1 13.3" Touchscreen Laptop - Intel Evo Platform - Intel Core i7 - 8GB Memory - 512GB SSD - Model:13m-bd0023dx
I picked this laptop to be my new travel/mobile PC laptop and I am very happy with the choice. It is slightly heavier than the Windows 10 tablet with detachable keyboard it replaces, but it is faster, has larger internal SSD storage, better IO port features and a backlit keyboard. The HP ENVY x360 is very well constructed with its aluminum chassis, extremely bright FHD display and backlit keyboard. All combined in what I think is a very stylish and powerful laptop. Like the Windows 10 tablet/keyboard PC it's nice to have a PC portable that weighs less than three pounds and can be carried in my briefcase or backpack rather than in a separate shoulder case.
The specifications at Best Buy quite well describe the ENVY x360 2-in-1 13.3 Model:13m-bd0023dx but there are a couple points I think could use a little expanding on.
Battery life - HP estimates up to 10 hours 45 minutes for WiFi video streaming. I am seeing about 8 hours 30 minutes, but the only concession to battery life was to set screen brightness to about 50%. There are still device power conservation steps that have not been tried yet but 10 hours plus doesn’t seem unreasonable..
The Backlit Keyboard of the HP - ENVY x360 2-in-1 13.3" Model:13m-bd0023dx Is as good as any I have seen and better than most. My experience has been that many backlit keyboards do not have uniform illumination of all keys and that some have a few keys that are hard to identify due to low back illumination. I have found the key illumination on the ENVY is very uniform making it a pleasure to use, your results might differ.
There is no included Active Stylus to use with the HP - ENVY x360 2-in-1 13.3" Model:13m-bd0023dx. An compatible HP stylus wasn’t immediately identifiable among those available locally. I tried a Wacom Bamboo Ink stylus I had on hand and it works fine with the ENVY and Windows Ink software in Windows 10 but I haven't researched other software compatibility yet.
The HP - ENVY x360 2-in-1 13.3" Model:13m-bd0023dx is a great mobile PC laptop and at its Black Friday sale price is a bargain. I recommend it to my friends and relations.

A smart watch with heart health monitoring
on November 6, 2020
Posted by: rockhunter
from New Mexico
The Withings ScanWatch is my first smart watch. The smartwatches I have looked at previously have been activity trackers with cell phone pairing for additional functions. The Withings Scanwatch has activity tracking for a wide a range of activities from walking, running, bicycling, rowing and many other activities. Of particular interest to me is that the Withings ScanWatch is one of a small number of smart watches with heart health monitoring as a focus and with the sensors to support ECG and SPO2 monitoring.
I have had my ScanWatch for over two weeks now and have been impressed with the really solid design and construction with it’s polished stainless steel body sapphire glass screen and clean traditional hour and minute hand design. The claim of up to thirty day battery life does not appear unreasonable. After ten days of use my ScanWatch reported the battery at sixty four percent. I am planning to recharge the watch every two weeks in the future.
There are a small number of or smart watches that share some or all of the same functionality at greater or lower cost. The learning curve for ScanWatch and its software is steep and not easy. I eventually found the answers I needed in the Health Mate application or the online manuals and FAQs at Withings website but it does take some time and effort. I recommend the Withings ScanWatch with the Health Mate application to my friends. I am glad I have my ScanWatch.

Cordless vacuum that really handles pet hair
on July 29, 2020
Posted by: rockhunter
from New Mexico
Cordless cleaning devices do the majority of the cleaning in our household and have for several years now. Robot Vacuums for routine cleaning of floors and carpets. Hand and stick vacuums for ceiling fans, air vents and upholstery with pet hair, dust and dirt. I got the Hoover ONEPWR EVOLVE PET CORDLESS UPRIGHT VACUUM 10 days ago and have used it twice now to clean floors in high traffic areas. The Hoover Evolve Pet does as good a job on our medium shag rugs as any corded or cordless vacuum we have had, even ones costing much more. The dirt bin is not as large as our corded vacuum but it is the largest of the several cordless models we have by about 50%. The Hoover Evolve Pet facilities for cleaning the vacuum and brush are effective and easy to use. The vacuum is not as versatile as many hand held models it is designed for floor and carpet but right now I don’t know of a superior model for floors. Five Stars

An excellent home/home-office computer
on December 31, 2019
Posted by: rockhunter

I searched several months this fall for an AIO replacement for my several years old AIO, the major criteria were SSD storage, 16GB or more of RAM and recent generation Core i7 processor. I chose the Dell - Inspiron 23.8" Touch-Screen All-In-One - Intel Core i7 - 16GB Memory - 512GB SSD – model 5490-7234SLV-PUS. I wanted an AIO for the convenient desktop size with a display larger than a laptop. The new Dell boots up and starts tasks several times faster then my old AIO system thanks to the SSD. The new exterior design is a refreshing change, white with narrow display bezel and wide stance stand which is actually more stable then the more usual pedestal design and frees up even more desk surface for example you could store the wireless keyboard under the system when not in use if you wanted to.
The 1920 by 1080 display quality has fine detail, bright colors and dark black. The sound is louder and better than the one on my old AIO although not theater quality, for video conferencing and calls it is excellent. One aspect I don't care for is that all IO ports are on the back of the display not accessible while seated in front of the system. All of my previous AIO systems had a USB port and a Media (SD card) port on the side of the system that was easily accessible while seated in front of the system. After looking at the Dell model on display I bought a USB 3.0 Hub to add to the Dell even before the system arrived. Front accessible ports are uncommon on the current generation of AIO systems.
The new Dell looks to me like an excellent home/home-office computer it has a modest desk foot print an excellent FHD color touch display and sound system. In my experience Dell has a well earned reputation for durable computer products and good product support and I don't hesitate to recommend the Dell Inspiron 5490-7234SLV-PUS to anyone considering an AIO.

I didn't like it
By drm2012 from Louisville, KY
I got this and returned it within 24 hours. The screen did not rotate and it did not come with flash, so I was not able to use it for it's intended purpose. The CSR at the store said that it's suppose to rotate, again I may have got a defective one.
After the initial set up it was easy to navigate. I'm familiar with the android operating system and it's easy to use.
The flash was the deal breaker, as with the other tablet I purchased. I got to try a lot in the store and was assured by the 1st CSR in the tablet section that it had flash, as the display unit was not working properly.
If I didn't have to have Adobe I would have kept it. It's camera and video were excellent. It was super fast, apps worked without a glitch.
I would recommend to a friend, but alert them that flash is not an option with this machine.

Auto-screen rotation is controled in settings, the Android JB OS usually sets the default to off the user just has to turn it back on.
Google took Adobe Flash out of Google Play for all JB and 4.X Android OS versions the Flash.apk has to be copied from another source and then can be installed. Also a number of the Android web browsers no longer support Flash under Android 4.X and JB so you have to load a new browser from Google Play that does support Flash. This is not an Acer issue but a common one for tablets and phones with the Android JB/4.x operating system.

32 GB Windows tablets
December 1, 2013
The space restrictions on 32 GB Windows 8.0 -8.1 32bit tablets are fairly .similar the Dell Venue 8 Pro has only about a GB greater free space then the miix2 8. The solution for a shortage of free space is to install an micro SD card and get a couple USB flash drives to create the system recovery sets and move Office to the SDcard and the recovery set to the USB flash drive. That lets you increase the free space on C: to about 12 GB and lets media reside on the SDcard also.

Great tablet if you don't want apps
By bre30127 from Savannah, GA
I was pretty excited to find a $99 tablet with full windows on it. Even though it has a small amount of memory (1gb) it didn't seem to be a problem. The BIG problem comes from the fact that since it has windows 8.1, you can't install apps to the sd card. (you could on windows 8) This means that right out of the box you only have about 5 gigs of space to use for apps and games and such. Updates also uses this space. The memory card can only be used for pictures, video and music. SO if you just plan on surfing the web and checking email... this should work. I just hope that email doesn't have an attachment.

Legacy Windows applications and Windows 8.0 and 8.
November 21, 2014
A commonly repeated complaint about Windows 8.0 and 8.1 is the lack of applications and that applications can only reside on the system drive (C:). Actually most legacy applications (Windows 7) can optionally be installed to drives other than C: an SD or microSD card and many Modern UI applications can be moved to an SD or microSD card by using a link pointing to the new location from the old location. So if an application was available under Windows 7 in many cases it is still usable under the new OSs. Subject to the limitations of the hardware (32 bit vs 64 bit, RAM, overall disk storage, etc)

DEFINITELY worth $100. But...
By remmy
There is no usb host function. You cannot plug in usb devices like a memory sick, or a keyboard or hub, or anything.
I am both delighted and concerned with how easy it is to sync this tablet with a win8 pc.
It seems to be a fully functional windows desktop. But the hardware limitations prevent the usage of resource hungry apps and programs.
The bluetooth works well. But for file transfers, it can be a bit "ARGH!" The cameras themselves are better than you think. But the stock camera app is abysmal.
The hdmi output is very good. This tablet supports multiple monitors; itself and one external (I've run youtube on one and LibreOffice on the other (it doesn't matter which is which)).
My tablet runs Blender, Chrome, and LibreOffice just fine. Though I haven't tested Blender thoroughly, I suspect renders will take some time (i.e. a LONG time, maybe a VERY long time)
The wifi is very good.
The touchscreen works best when not in desktop mode.
The battery is surprisingly good.
For music makers: there is a 100-150 ms delay between touch and sound. I don't know about bluetooth connected devices. The on board speaker is okay. Headphones are pretty good. Haven't tested the microphone.
To conclude; if your expectations are reasonable (given the price tag), you will be quite satisfied. Compared to $100 Android tablets, the hardware is so-so, but this tablet more than makes up for it in functionality.
Update: I changed from 4 stars to 5 stars simply because of the price.
Abstract: if i can get another, I plan to hack some upgrades.

USB host function
December 1, 2014
USB host function in the NS-15MS08 requires an micro USB adapter the fully supports the USB OTG specification (some tablets relax this this one doesn't and some adapters don't fully support the specification) I created a recovery USB flash drive using an adapter specified as OTG and have used a flash drive to transfer files to the tablet. Don't know if the tablet will power an USB hard drive or optical drive.

A Windows PC at an Android tablet Price
By rockhunter from New Mexico
This model just arrived at the local Best Buy and I picked it up on impulse (I have a couple other Windows 8.1 tablets), and curiosity (how do you fit 32 bit Windows 8.1 on a 16 GB system disk). This is my initial impression after a day of hands-on I'll try to update the review later. Installation was the standard Windows 8.1 process, setup MS account and sync applications and settings, after Windows updates and applications syncing and disk clean up I have 4.4 GB free (your results may differ). Tablet hardware is middle of the road, construction seem solid and better then you might expect in an economy package and a lot of other tablets I have seen or used. CPU performance is fairly snappy, applications take slightly longer to load then I see with Tablets with 2GB of RAM instead of the 1GB the Insignia has but execution is as fast or faster then other Intel Atom CPU powered tablets I have experience with. The connectivity to the tablet is better then some of the much more expensive tablets I have used and includes WiFi, micro USB, and micro HDMI. The WiFi is slower then the other tablets I have but that might be WiFi router related, Netflix, email, Web browsing all work just as quickly as any other PCs I have. The screen performance is fine, it is not a retina display but it is again middle of the class performance for color brightness and resolution. Netflix looked actually better then some other tablets I have used both Android and Windows.
Now the CONs beyond the obvious tight disk space, battery life looks like it is going to be between 5 and 6 hours for a mix of web browsing, email, video streaming and reading. I haven't found a way to use the USB port for Data transfer and charge/power the tablet simultaneously which has been a problem with usability of some other tablets but may be solvable. Accessories are a problem now screen protectors and cases choices are limited to those manufactured for other tablets.
I will recommend considering the Insignia to my friends who are looking for a tablet to handle Internet web browsing, email, streaming video, ebook reading and light Microsoft Office class work. It certainly looks like it could be cost effective alternative to other tablets.

Follow up to original review
December 1, 2014
Follow up after about 3 weeks.
The slightly slow WiFi speed was a router issue my other tablets and laptop also had the same issue, a network modem and router reboot solved the issue and the Insignia WiFi performance is the same as the other tablets and laptops.
Battery life is averaging about 6.5 hours on a charge (YMMV).
The micro USB port host mode usage is affected by the micro USB to USB adapter you use as a couple of the other brands of tablets in the house also are. I have bought the adapters in groups of 2 or 3 so there is one laying around in the various places I use the tablets and some work with a flash drive on the Insignia and some don't.
I finally decided to use another office suite that I had on the shelf that could be installed on the microSD card instead of Office 365 that saves atleast 300 Mb on the system drive. Free storage on the system drive (C:\) is at 4.4 GB,
I have become even more impressed with what a value the Insignia NS-15MS08 is other than system drive storage you get about 95% of the performance of other Intel Atom quad core based tablets at 50% or less of the price.

Insignia Flex 8 inch NS-P08A7100 Android 6.0 Tablet.
I tried the new 10 inch Flex 10 a week ago and took it back after a day because to many of my usual APPs did not work. Two days ago the local Best Buy received the new Insignia Flex 8 and at $30 less then the 10 inch model and having a couple Reward Zone certificates I bought one. The 10 inch and 8 inch tablets have a lot in common, same CPU/SOC, same RAM, same screen resolution, same nice solid construction. The same APPs that I tried on the 10 inch and wouldn't work, didn't work on the 8 inch version either.
I decided to keep the NS-P08A7100 because after a lot of time in the play store I was able to find APPs that could would serve as replacements for my usual apps, that wouldn't work. Streaming media was a problem. I had to try almost a dozen media players before I found one that would stream video from a media server and not drop the connection every two to five minutes. The dedicated Netflix and Xfinity APPs worked fine, but streaming from a media server via Wifi to a media player APP would drop the connection every two to five
minutes for most media playback APPs, but I did find one that works OK.
The Flex 8 is fast for a budget tablet and compares well to tablets costing much more, and I expect that future software updates will fix the issues with many APPS that have problem now. Battery life is also better then a lot of economy tablets it looks like I will see 5 to 7 hours of Wifi on web browsing and video streaming. I will recommend the new Insignia Flex 8 to my friends and family with the caution that they may have to look for some new APPs in the play store.

Caution Setup issue
September 3, 2016
During the first use from a factory reset or new tablet with the current version of Android, the first startup/setup has a flaw, the touch screen has the keyboard set to auto repeat and auto correct which makes it practically impossible to get through the tablet set up where any text or email address has to be input. Get Geek Squad to help with the first time setup or just skip all of the Google account setup steps and complete the process. Then go back to setup, setup your google account and set the keyboard options to something you can use. I hit this with two of these tablets now and you will think the touch screen is defective at first. Its not a hard wear issue but a minor issue in system software that is gone once the first startup is completed and probably will be gone after the first system revision, or perhaps has already been fixed.

Fashion a workspace with this Lenovo 11.6-inch ThinkPad at its center. Quad-core technology lets you accomplish a wide range of tasks, as does the 4GB of RAM and the 128GB solid-state hard drive. Powerful wireless technology lets you link up to a network, and this Lenovo 11.6-inch ThinkPad includes a memory card reader for photo and data transfer.

Actualy excellent compact laptop!
October 12, 2016
I bought the ThinkPad 11E from another vender because they had the laptop with 8GB of RAM otherwise it is the same system. No problem regarding OS mine came with Windows 10 Pro as advertised. I have looked in detail at 11.6 inch laptops from Lenovo and 2 other manufactures they were both 2in1 and non-touch screen laptops. The number and variety of ports, the speed of an SSD system drive and 64bit Windows set the ThinkPad 11E apart from the other economy systems available in my area. I didn't write a review because I bought it from another vender and it had more RAM.

With a 200GB capacity, this SanDisk Ultra microSDXC memory card provides plenty of space to store pictures, videos and other important files. An included SD adapter enables use with a variety of devices.

Is this compatible with surface pro 4?

Based on the success in I had with a Dell Venue 11 Pro I had I would expect the card to work just fine formatted as NTFS, It might work as EXFAT also but there would probably be a heavy lost usable space penalty with that file system.

Can this tablet run the chromecast extender to view webpages on a chromecast tv?

My windows 7 pc can send websites thru the browser to my chromecast tv with the extender. Can this tablet with Windows 8.1 do it also ?
The Dell Venue 8 should work fine with the chromecast adapter, and I have first hand experience that it works fine with using it with a Miracast
adapter.

Yes if you want to but for IE flash player support is already coded in but its Windows 8.1 so it is like any other Windows laptop or desktop running 32 bit Windows regarding the programs you can install.

Do I have to buy a data plan with this tablet?

I was wondering if I need to purchase a data plan for this tablet, and if so are there any tablets where I wouldn't need to have a data plan with?
This is a WiFi only Tablet so no Cellular data plan required where WiFi is available.
