Lots of features but not exactly intuitive
on November 2, 2021

I'm very impressed by the feature set of this alarm system.
It's both an alarm, and it's a WiFi router.
It also comes with a whole slew of different sensors.
I got this because I had to replace my router anyway, and I was interested in getting a security system for my home.
You will need to download and install both the Eero app (for WiFi) and the Ring app (for the security system) to get this device to work.
As a router, it's not bad. I was a little disappointed by its range (it doesn't extend quite as far as my previous router), but it's every bit as fast. I like the fact that Eero sells expansion units that can be used to expand the range of the router. I'm probably going to pick one up to extend my WiFi coverage.
I was a little disappointed that it doesn't have more ethernet ports. I'm used to routers having four or more, but this device only has two.
The instructions that come with the router are unclear on what the micro-SD card slot can be used for. I wasn't able to get it to recognize the micro-SD card that I tried in it, but that could have been an issue with my card.
I was also disappointed that the Eero app seemingly doesn't allow you to separate the 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz bands. I was hoping to create two, separate, WiFi networks. One for my Smart Home devices (2.4 ghz) and one for my computers and the like (5 ghz). Unfortunately, I couldn't make this happen.
As an alarm system, this device was pretty easy to set up.
It comes with a keypad, a z-wave range extender, multiple door/window sensors, and a motion sensor.
Again, the instructions for the keypad were sorely lacking. There are three basic states to the alarm: Deactivated, At Home, or Away. You will need to enter your pin code (created during setup) any time you want to switch between modes. "Deactivated" stops any motion sensors or door/window sensors from triggering your alarm, "At Home" turns on your door/window sensors (but leaves any motion sensor turned off), and "Away" turns on all of your sensors after a short delay (allowing you to exit the premises).
Along the left side of the keypad are quick action buttons for various emergency services (requires a service plan).
As a pet owner, I have to say that I'm not keen on the motion sensor. It supposedly has technology to prevent your furry friends from triggering it, but I found it inconsistent at best. You may want to pass on this component if you have a furry friend.
Installing the door and window sensors was extremely simple. They are very forgiving, and you just need to have the two halves within about an inch of each other to get them to work. The adhesive on the back of the sensors is surprisingly strong too.
I'm quite happy with this device. It filled my need for a new router, and it also provides me with a certain degree of peace of mind for when I'm not at home.

Some initial concerns, but okay now

For the first three days that I had this camera, I was absolutely thrilled with it and could not stop singing its praises.
Image quality was terrific, the light was nice and bright, the night vision was AMAZINGLY sharp, and the app was easy to use.
Installation was a little tricky, but I managed to get the camera setup after separating my network's 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz bands into two different names.
After the third day, we received a light, misty rain.
At that point, the camera spontaneously disconnected from WiFi and would not reconnect.
I brought the camera in and let it dry out for two days. During this time, it managed to get itself back onto my network; and it installed a firmware update.
Since then, I haven't had any issues. We've even had two days of fairly heavy storms, and the camera continues to function just fine.
I'm still a little anxious about this camera and inclement weather. But for the most part, I'm quite pleased with it.

Rather small, but well made and flashy
on October 11, 2021

I like this controller. It's well constructed, and I like the fact that it can be personalized.
This controller feels small to me. My hands are rather "average", but I feel like I'm struggling to hit the shoulder buttons and triggers more compared to other Xbox controllers.
This isn't a deal breaker though.
After a few minutes of gameplay, you start to get used to the narrower controller grip. The joysticks are responsive and easy to aim, the triggers have switches on the back so that you can tailor them to your taste, and the back of the controller has a lightly pebbled grip so that it rests comfortably in your hand.
The controller comes with a nice, long braided cable. Surprisingly, it's detachable and plugs into the controller with a micro-USB connection. I find the fact that it's detachable a little odd since this controller only works as a wired controller. Maybe they added this so that you could replace it if the cable breaks?
As far as personalization goes, the controller has three lighting zones that you can customize: The outer border, the left thumbstick and X/Y/B/A buttons, and the d-pad and right thumbstick. Each zone can be customized individually to display a different color. I'm rocking an orange / blue theme at the moment that looks really cool.
I would recommend this controller to anyone looking for a fun controller that they can tailor to their taste.

Setup was truly awful - works okay
on October 11, 2021

I originally got this with the intent of using it on a drawer. Unfortunately, the instructions don't provide any direction on how to install it in a drawer. Fortunately, I had a cabinet that needed a lock as well.
The initial setup was absolutely horrible.
The mounting guide didn't fit properly, it took almost a dozen tries to get it to connect to Wi-Fi, it went into some kind of install loop and had me register again and again and again . . ., and after I finally got it connected . . . it randomly disconnected and wouldn't reconnect until I rebooted my phone.
Now all of that being said, it is a very secure clock. When it latches, it latches very strongly and feels quite solid.
Given how horrible setup was, I wouldn't really recommend this device. However, to be fair, it seems to work perfectly fine once you get through the setup.

Well constructed and stylish

This Satechi USB hub is well constructed and stylish.
The hub is metal and solidly built. There is no "creaking" to it at all, and it feels very premium.
The hub has 2 USB type-A ports, a USB type-C power port, a full-size HDMI port, a micro-SD card slot, a full-size SD card slot, and an ethernet port. The ethernet port is one of those with the hinge that pops out. I found it to be very VERY stiff. I worried that I was breaking it trying to get it open.
My one complaint about the construction of the hub is that the cable is too short. I prefer to have my hubs sitting flat on my desk or flush to the device (as opposed to dangling in mid-air). This one can't quite manage that.
I also wish that it had another USB type-C port for data. I'm in that awkward state where about half of my devices and flash drives are USB type-A and half are USB type-C.
I'm quite happy with this hub, and I would recommend it to anyone needing more ports.

Scratchy and uncomfortable
on September 22, 2021
Posted by: TechEnthusiast

I personally wasn't a fan of these face masks.
I found them to be quite scratchy at the edges and uncomfortable. The edges rub like sandpaper against my cheeks, and the sensation is quite unpleasant.
The masks have a silicone nose piece to ensure a proper seal and fit and to prevent your glasses from steaming up. No matter how I positioned my nose against the nose piece, I couldn't get the mask to fit comfortably.
I honestly couldn't wear these for more than fifteen minutes at a time.
These masks are okay for a quick trip into a store, but I would not recommend them for wearing all day at work or school.

Comfortable controller
on September 14, 2021
Posted by: TechEnthusiast
from Elgin, IL
I found this controller to be quite comfortable.
I was worried that it would be too small since it was marketed as a "compact" controller. I found that wasn't the case at all though. The controller fits quite comfortably in my "average" size hands, and I had no issues reaching any of the buttons or triggers.
The buttons and triggers are good sized, and I had no issues with accidental presses or missed presses.
I wish that this controller was cordless. But the cord length isn't bad at all. My TV stand is a good distance away from my couch, and the cord managed to stretch the distance easily.
I also used this controller on my gaming laptop. There is a dedicated Windows 10 app for controlling things like trigger sensitivity and joystick sensitivity. I found the app worked well, but it didn't really add too much in the way of functionality to this controller.
All in all, I would recommend this as a good secondary controller.

A study in compromise. Adequate but not great.

I’m knocking two stars off this review because my first ASUS TUF F17 laptop was defective. There was something wrong with the graphics card hardware that caused the laptop to freeze and/or get the “blue screen of death” anytime I had it on battery for more than ten minutes.
ASUS should really be doing a better job with quality control on their products.
Having said that, I’ll give them a star back for excellent customer service and support. I received a replacement laptop, and I used it to complete this review.
This laptop offers excellent performance, but certain design choices hold this laptop back from feeling particularly “premium.” This laptop compromises across the board by combining premium components with various, cheaper, cost-saving measures.
The laptop is mostly plastic. I think that the lid might be clad in a thin sheet of metal, but that’s it. I’m not certain how they can market this as “Military Grade” as it certainly doesn’t seem all that rugged. The keyboard deck is very plasticky, and it (unfortunately) has a fair amount of flex to it.
Build quality in general is “adequate.” I’ve certainly worked on flimsier laptops, but I’ve worked on better ones too.
The keyboard is backlit with a fully customizable, multi-color backlight. This is a nice premium touch, and the keyboard is generally quite pleasant to type on. The keyboard includes a number pad along the right-hand side, and the keys have a nice amount of travel to them.
The touchpad is nice and large. I have mixed feelings about the buttons on the touchpad. On the one hand, I like the fact that they included dedicated buttons instead of ambiguous right and left click “zones.” On the other hand, the buttons are extremely plasticky and contribute to the whole “less than premium” vibe.
The screen is big, bright, and wide. It’s just about perfect for gaming. This is my favorite thing about this laptop.
Overall, I’d say that the laptop aesthetic is “gamery” enough to be fun; but it’s not so over-the-top that it would stand out too much in a lecture hall or coffee shop.
Battery life is abysmal at a little more than 2 hours with only light internet browsing and no games or multimedia playing. This is to be expected on most gaming laptops though as quality screens and dedicated GPUs tend to use more power. I certainly can’t fault ASUS for this.
The i5 CPU and RTX 350TI graphics card offer excellent performance. This laptop does skimp on RAM some, but most of my games still ran just fine on 8GB.
Storage is somewhat paltry at less than 500GB. Most modern titles take up 30-50GB of space. At less than 500GB, you should only expect to install a handful of modern games.
To their credit, the SSD that they included does seem to boot up quickly, and loading times weren’t bad at all.
The system comes with ASUS’ “Armoury Crate” software for controlling settings, monitoring system resources, and controlling the keyboard backlight.
I have to say that I’m not terribly impressed by it.
Armoury Crate was unable to see any of my games (including modern triple-A titles), The software also directs me to install ASUS’ “Aura Creator” software for more advanced lighting effects. Upon going to ASUS’ site though, it tells you that Aura Creator has been discontinued and its features have been moved to Armoury Crate (which begs the question, “Why did it tell me to download this instead?”).
This laptop compromises across the board to produce a machine that is affordable, works relatively well, and gets the job done. If all you’re looking for is an entry-level device for casual gaming, then this would be an excellent choice for you.

This is the best laptop that I've ever had.
on August 22, 2021
Posted by: TechEnthusiast
from Elgin, IL
This is a truly incredible gaming laptop, and I am truly very VERY happy with it.
The laptop has two USB type-C ports, 1 USB type-A port, a micro-SD card reader, a full-size HDMI port, and a headphone / mic port. With the exception of the headphone / mic port, all of the ports are on the back of the device.
I’m not quite sure how I feel about this. The back of the machine makes a lot of sense for plugging in a wired mouse (you don’t have to worry about “left-side” versus “right-side” and whether or not the cable is going to be in the way), but it makes less sense when plugging in things like flash drives (since you have to flip the device around to see where you’re plugging the drive into). This doesn’t matter as much if you’re not using this device for content creation.
The laptop apparently comes with an empty hard drive slot if you need to expand the storage. At 500GB of solid state storage, the laptop has enough room for the operating system, your browser of choice, and “a few” modern games. Personally, I’m a little hesitant to break open brand new tech for the sake of installing more storage for games that I’ll probably never even get around to playing. Fortunately for me, this laptop has a micro-SD slot. I can pop in a 256GB card and install my older (smaller) games to it instead of the SSD. Yes, the read/write speed will be slower. But for older titles, it doesn’t make all that much difference. If you’re careful with your installs (and don’t mind carrying an SD card case with a few different cards), then you can swap cards and take a TON of games with you on the go.
I LOVE the fact that they included this slot.
Battery life comes in at just a little bit more than 2 hours with light usage (i.e. browsing the web and not actively gaming). This isn’t terribly surprising given the high quality screen and GPU that this device is powering. Lower battery life is a small tradeoff for the sheer quality of this device.
I was able to play my go-to MMO on maximum settings with no issues. Image quality was seriously impressive.
The fan speed did kick up as I ramped up the quality settings. It was loud, but it wasn’t just crazy loud. And while the device did get quite warm, it didn’t feel like it was getting dangerously warm. Fun fact, if you want to manually kick the laptop into overdrive, press the F1 function key to immediately go into “High Performance Mode.”
The F2-F6 function keys are unassigned macro-keys. The included Alienware software can be used to easily program them for a variety of functions. This software can also be used to control the keyboard and accent lighting with a nice range of effects.
Volume controls are along the right-side of the keyboard. This is a little unusual, but it seems to work well.
The typing experience on the keyboard is pretty good. The keyboard has virtually no flex to it, but I did find that I had trouble with periodically missing keystrokes. I attribute this to the relatively shallow key travel and not to a true hardware fault. I do find the extra “bump” on the “S” key to be more distracting than helpful.
The exterior of the laptop is covered in an off-white, “ceramic-like” material. I was more than a little concerned with the white finish as I worried that it would look worn and shabby in minutes. The slight, off-white color softens the look some; and whatever this material is seems to resists fingerprints well.
The power brick is surprisingly small given the fact this is a gaming laptop. I had no trouble fitting it into my laptop bag.
On my first outing with this laptop, I had people literally coming up to me at the coffee shop to marvel at it. It definitely has a striking look.
I think this laptop will last me a good long time, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone looking for a premium gaming laptop.

Phenomenal macro pad

The Elgato Stream Deck is a phenomenal macro pad.
The software is very intuitive. And right out of the box, the integration with OBS Studio is solid.
Programming quick actions like opening programs, pressing hotkeys, triggering a recording sessions, or switching between profiles is remarkably easy to setup.
The ability to create and switch between profiles expands the possibilities beyond just 15 keys.
I currently have all of my recording commands built under one profile, and then I have another profile for my in-game emotes. Switching between the two is just a simple button press.
This thing is great for tasks beyond streaming or gaming too. As a graphic designer, I use a lot of keyboard shortcuts and repeat a lot of actions. I now have a graphic design profile built to simplify a lot of my workflow into individual button presses.
I absolutely love this device.

The Ninja Foodi Dual Heat Air Fry Oven gives you versatility in the kitchen with 11-in-1 functionality from Air Fry and Sear Crisp to Rapid Bake and Toast. With Dual Heat Technology, unlock up to 500°F cyclonic air and a directly heated SearPlate, which allow for fast cooking and restaurant-worthy results. Cook up your favorites and then flip the oven up and away to reclaim your counter space.

What settings do you use to reheat on this? It seems to be missing the reheat and dehydrate functions. Are there manual work arounds for each?

Not all models include the reheat and dehydrate functions (though all models get the same instruction manual which causes some confusion).

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any manual workarounds for this.

Up to what distance it will detect Human detection only?

I don't know the "official" answer to this, but I have it aimed down a rather long driveway, and it only detects people about a 1/3 of the way down it. Past that, it doesn't trigger any notifications at all.

If I had to guess, I'd estimate that its range is somewhere around 15-20 feet.

Harness your PC's potential with the 980. Whether you need a boost for gaming or a seamless workflow for heavy graphics, the 980 is a smart choice for outstanding SSD performance — and it's all backed by an NVMe* interface and PCIe 3.0 technology.

Is this compatible with Acer nitro 5 gaming laptop?

I have one of the earliest models of the Nitro 5, and it installed in mine just fine. Couple warnings though: If you want to refresh your operating system after installing it (recommended to avoid hardware glitches), you'll need to remove any additional hard drives (otherwise it errors out). Another thing: after refreshing the operating system, it will only recognize the SSD until you install all of the Windows updates. After installing the updates, any secondary drives will show up again.

Pair Surface Go Type Cover with Surface Go* for a full keyboard experience anywhere. Ultra-compact, yet it includes a complete mechanical keyset, backlit keys, and extra-large trackpad. Plus, three colors are covered in rich Alcantara material¹ for an added touch of luxury and comfort.

What is the power source for the Microsoft Surface Go type cover?

The tablet itself powers the keyboard. The keyboard connects to the Surface Go via tiny pogo pins on the bottom of the tablet. These pins transmit both power and data. Because of this, the keyboard doesn't require any additional power source; and you don't have to play with Bluetooth settings or anything to pair the keyboard to the tablet.

Garmin Speak™ Plus with Amazon Alexa is what you love about Amazon Alexa, now in your vehicle. Use voice control for hands-free access to music, news, navigation and more. Plus, a built-in dash cam gives you forward collision and lane departure warnings.

How can dash cam footage be accessed? Is there cloud storage for the dashcam footage? If there's cloud storage, how much data/hour would the dashcam footage use? Alternatively, can video quality be adjusted to lower bandwidth usage?

Footage is stored on the micro-SD card inserted in the camera itself.

It can be accessed from the Speak app after you download the VIRB app. Note that while you need the VIRB app to access the footage, you can't view the photos directly from the VIRB app. You instead go back to the Speak app so that it can open the VIRB app and display the photos and videos (I know, it's an incredibly silly process).

If you try to open the VIRB app directly, it will tell you that it can't locate your camera.

Now that Google has released the ability to make calls can this model make calls also?

Not yet. Apparently it can make your phone ring if you misplace it and ask it to call your own phone, but it can't make domestic calls yet. Hopefully they'll add this functionality soon.

Just got this. During initial setup it asked to update Windows so I did, and it said something on the laptop wasn't compatible with Windows so it couldn't update. Is that normal for a brand new laptop? Also it gets VERY hot in 10 minutes of just Facebook.

I had the same problem with heat when I first got this laptop. If you go to the Dell support site for this laptop, they have an automated system check and driver update that works wonders. I'll warn you that you will have to hunt a little on the site to find it. I'm afraid that Best Buy won't allow me to send you a link to the page.

After running it, my heat issue was fixed completely; and the laptop runs at a nice ambient temperature now.

I'm not sure why you got an error about something not being compatible with Windows update, but you might want to try running Dell's system check first and then try it again.
