A long time holy grail for Asian film collectors makes a solid debut on DVD courtesy of Image Entertainment. The transfer is pretty good, offering an anamorphic widescreen image full of vibrant colors and detail. There is some motion combing since it is a conversion from a PAL video source to the NTSC format but these issues are less annoying than one would expect from such a conversion. Fans will also be happy to know that the film has been restored to its full original-cut length. Both 5.1 stereo and 2.0 mono mixes of the film's Mandarin soundtrack are included, with the stereo mix giving the original track a nice sonic facelift that works some space and directional effects into the mix. Extras on the disc are limited to a brief but eye-popping image gallery and a collection of trailers for various Shaw Brothers films and other miscellaneous Asian efforts offered by Image. Thankfully, this disc also includes a booklet with an excellent and informative critical analysis of the film by critic Stephen Gladwin. All in all, this is edition of The Boxer's Omen is a worthwhile disc for Asian film fans and anyone who enjoys cinematic weirdness.
