Epson and Best Buy both insufficient

Verified Purchase:Yes
I bought the Epson WF-3640 at Best Buy. It printed OK, copied OK, and scanned OK. The Epson diagnostics said the fax was connected and ready, but after a couple of weeks without even a junk fax, I discovered that the unit was unable to make a call or receive a fax. Although I have analog phone lines, Epson tech's diagnosis was that I needed to install a DSL filter. This was 17 days after purchase. I figured the unit had a bad fax module. and since I was within 30 days of purchase, I took the unit to Best Buy to exchange. My attention was directed to the small print on the receipt, about a 15-day return period. It made no difference that I did not want a refund, but was exchanging a non-functioning item.
So, back to Epson tech. After repeating the meaningless round of diagnostics, the tech agreed to exchange. I give Epson 5 stars for its exchange system. FedEx brought the replacement unit in 2 days.
I set up the new 3640. Prints OK, copies OK, does NOT scan, and does NOT fax. Called tech, who transferred me up a level to someone spoke American-accented English. Repeated the same diagnostics. Tech concluded I need a "fax filter", that is, a DSL filter, because otherwise the 3640 fax would work. He refused to believe I have analog. He insisted I call AT&T so he could talk to them. He then agreed to call me back in 5 minutes, during which I should confirm with AT&T. He refused to discuss the scan problem until I called AT&T. He then informed me that Epson's warranty does NOT allow refunds! He said Epson would exchange again, but the new unit will not fax on my DSL. So, we disconnected. I confirmed with AT&T that I have analog, and waited for the tech to call back. It is now 25 hours later; right, NO call back.
Current status: No scan, no fax, no faith in Epson, and ill will toward Best Buy. It is looking like I will go to Amazon.com and buy a HP 4 in 1...and test the fax immediately. I will find a charity that needs a 2 in 1.
