Comfortable, supportive, and cool
on October 11, 2021
Posted by: PhilipM
from Atlanta, GA
I've been sleeping on this Bedgear pillow for about a week now and can confidently say it's the best and most comfortable pillow I've ever had. The pillow is constructed with materials and vents which are both designed to keep it cool throughout the night and my experience suggests that the design is successful. Although passive cooling will never prevent all heat build up, I've found that even when used in a pillow case (the cover of the pillow is removable so a case is not technically required), the pillow remains comfortably cool in use. It's also supportive without being too hard. My previous pillow used memory foam, which was quite supportive, but this design provides a better balance of support and comfort. It helps that Bedgear offers several sizes and a handy guide to help you pick the correct one based on size and sleep style.
Pros:
- Excellent balance of support and comfort.
- Multiple sizes to suite different body types and sleep styles.
- Remains comfortably cool throughout the night
- Removable cover for easy cleaning
Cons:
- The pattern on the removable cover is a bit busy - you're going to want a pillow case.
Overall I'm really happy with this pillow and can recommend it without hesitation.

Fast, quiet, and capacious
on August 10, 2021

With this 10TB entry to the "black" series of performance mechanical hard drives, WD has created a product which combines outstanding capacity and quietness with solid performance.
Installation is easy with a standard SATA cable setup and I had no issues setting up the disk. Performance benchmarks (and my own 50GB file copy tests) reveal read and write speed of about 240 MB/s - almost enough to saturate a SATA2 link, but only about half as quick as my Samsung EVO 860 SSD drives when run on SATA3. That said, I won't complain about 240MB/s of sustained read or write speed for a 7200 rpm mechanical hard drive, especially one this quiet. WD has also invested in processing speed and this drive performs about 3/4 as many I/O operations per second as those Samsung SSDs. These are solid numbers and they yield quick game and level load times that are, in practice, usually not that different to loading from a SATA SSD. Obviously none of these options compare to the latest NVMe drives, but we're also in a different league in terms of cost/TB. For a mechanical hard drive, performance is exemplary.
Bottom line: If you need large amounts of storage for your games and want quick load times but aren't willing to pay the premium for ultra large solid state drives, this is a great choice.

Good idea, works well, app needs work
on June 28, 2021
Posted by: PhilipM
from Atlanta, GA
Having recently had to replace some baseboard and sheetrock following a minor bathroom leak, the idea behind the Phyn Smart Water Sensor is especially appealing in our household. These little puck-shaped devices slip easily behind toilets, under sinks, and into air conditioner drip trays to provide a reliable early warning when water or high humidity is present.
The devices work well, providing almost instant notification when they come into contact with water. They also provide humidity monitoring, which also seems to work fine. Pricing is low enough that several units can be purchased and placed throughout various risk points in the home. Given the potential for very expensive damage and/or adverse health effects from undetected water leakage, I think the devices are well worthwhile.
The main deficits with the system stem from the immature software. An app is available for iOS and Android (we tested the Android version) and it provides the ability to add devices along with a monitoring graph and notifications of events such as water detection. It does the job, but there are several ways it could be improved. Setup ostensibly involves scanning a QR code on the back of the device, but in my experience neither this nor the fall back method of entering the code manually worked correctly (the app said the code was incorrect). Fortunately there is another fall back method where the app can join a temporary wifi network published by the device itself, so it's not a terminal issue. The other issue with the app is that the monitoring charts are very small and there doesn't seem to be a way to zoom in to that to better see humidity. None of these issues are show stoppers and hopefully with time the software will be improved.
The only other minor issue is that these devices each require a wifi connection and they only support 2.4G, so if you have a crowded 2.4G wifi environment (common with homes that have lots of smart home devices), these may add to that issue depending on how many you get.
Overall I think the minor technical issues are outweighed by the cost effective monitoring these devices provide. I will be purchasing some additional units to cover other areas of our home and will sleep better knowing that they're in place.
Pros:
- Provides quick notification for detection of water or high humidity
- Inexpensive
- Battery operated and can be easily deployed anywhere in the home where wifi coverage is available.
Cons:
- App needs some work to help make setup and monitoring easier.
- Devices cannot join 5Ghz wifi networks, so 2.4G congestion may be an issue for some.

Solid build and superb performance
on April 24, 2021
Posted by: PhilipM
from Atlanta, GA
This Acer chromebook combines superb performance with solid build quality and excellent battery life. We have a family of heavy Chromebook users and over the past two weeks they’ve been sharing this device for a wide range of tasks from basic homework to web browsing to 3D modelling and writing this review. In all cases the device has performed flawlessly and with performance which often rivals mid-range Intel based laptops.
Pros
- High quality construction and solid feel
- Sharp touch screen with above average color reproduction and contrast ratio
- Full size keyboard with excellent feel and large trackpad
- Decent built in speakers
- Multi-day battery life for moderate use – expect about 4-5 hours of continuous use from a charge
- Excellent performance for everything from games to MS Office apps and even 3D modelling (Tinker CAD).
- Full set of ports including two USB-A, two USB-C, and even a microSD slot.
- Runs cool.
- Ultra fast WIFI performance (I got > 400 Mb/s up and down).
Cons
- Limited software library (remember that by design you cannot download and install Windows apps on a Chromebook)
- Typical Chrome related bugs such as apps not installing and printers not being detected. Again, these issues are problems with the Chromebook platform and not with this device.
Running Office web apps is easy and fast and documents are seamlessly available across other devices via OneDrive. While these are not the full featured desktop Windows apps, they are quite powerful and flexible and do maintain full compatibility with the desktop versions.
In order to really stress test the device, we loaded up the Tinker CAD 3D modelling system. A cube was placed and duplicated over 3,000 times, a hole was extracted from the shapes and gradients applied. In all cases the results rendered within a few seconds and ran at least as quickly that a mid-range Windows laptop running Chrome – in some cases much faster.
Chromebooks are not a perfect replacement for a desktop OS, but for web based apps, browsing, email, schoolwork, and other online-centric tasks they provide a great, lightweight alternative. If you’re somebody for whom a Chromebook is a good fit, or if you’re already a Chrome fan, this device is easy to recommend as a high quality and powerful computing companion.

Efficient, effective, and silent
on March 9, 2021
Posted by: PhilipM
from Atlanta, GA
Blueair have a long and well-deserved reputation for excellent air filters and this slightly updated version of their 600 series builds on a proven design with some basic smart home control elements.
At it's core, this is a highly efficient HEPA air cleaner which is easily able to handle larger indoor areas, including modern open plan living room / kitchen areas. The unit uses three filter cartridges and an extremely high quality fan to move a lot of air with very little noise. I can speak to the quality because we've had an older 500 series (same chassis design but no smart controls) for over 8 years and it has run perfectly without any increase in fan noise.
The new smart control features are limited but useful. After connecting to wifi and pairing with the app (I've tried with Android 10 and 11), you can control fan speed, see overall outdoor air quality (no internal sensors on this unit), and dim the blue LED lighting on the side. These features can also be programmed to run on a series of flexible schedules and this allows me to run the fan on high late at night when nobody is up to hear it and automatically turn it to a lower setting during the day. Convenient.
Pros:
- Highly efficient design can cover a large area.
- Good quality construction, components (especially fan), and filters.
- Virtually silent on all but the highest fan speed.
- Smart scheduling and remote app control.
- My experience with the brand suggests excellent long term reliability.
Cons:
- The unit is quite large, so take careful note of the measurements vs. your intended location.
- This version has no internal sensors to show indoor air quality.
- Replacement filters are about $80 / set (you can get a discount if you subscribe via Amazon or Blueair's own web site). They last about six months in my experience.
If you're looking for a reliable, well built, effective, and quiet air filter and don't need high end air quality sensors, this is a first rate choice that should serve you very well for many years to come.

Easy and reliable, but federal stronger than state
on February 14, 2021
Posted by: PhilipM
from Atlanta, GA
I’ve been using H&R Block tax software for tax preparation for over 10 years now and have always found the software to be reliable and reasonably easy to use. This version includes rental real estate calculations and these have worked well for me over several years now at the federal level.
The annual updates have typically seemed to focus on tax changes rather than upgrades to the program itself, but 2020 does bring some welcome updates to the experience.
1. The interview process has been improved in some key areas, including depreciation and various 1099 sources, and is generally a little easier to follow.
2. There’s also a great new option to scan W2 forms from a link sent to a cell phone from which the software will perform an OCR scan and input the values directly. This is a great time saving option for those whose employers do not provide a compatible download option.
In generally, the process is smooth, easy to understand, and does not require extensive tax knowledge given thorough explanations provided for most steps. There are still some areas where the program provides a laundry list of potential credits or adjustments for the user to enter without a lot of context or explanation for each one (or in some cases there are links to click for some but not others).
I’ve found the state versions of the program to be less detailed and less well developed in general. While there have been some improvements this year, there are still a few issues:
1. The state program (GA in my case) provides several lengthy lists of items to enter which won’t apply to most taxpayers but are accompanied by very little explanation.
2. At least in the case of GA, it still doesn’t calculate state depreciation despite having access to all the underlying information from the federal return. This is my biggest issue each year.
3. If for some reason you need to override a value on the state return, the software will not allow you to e-file.
Overall TaxCut is a solid and reliable program which has served me well. Just be prepared to do a little of your own research, especially on the state side, for less common tax situations.

Attractive & versatile with solid performance
on January 13, 2021
Posted by: PhilipM
from Atlanta, GA
This new sound bar from Yamaha combines the brand’s usual thoughtful design and excellent build quality with solid performance that should be a major upgrade from almost any built-in TV speakers. This versatile design can be positioned on a TV stand or wall mounted and connects via HDMI (ARC) or optical cable (one of the latter is included in the box). A handy remote is included, but touch controls are also available on the front of the device itself.
Sound quality is smooth and, clear, and louder than one might expect for a bar of this size, and although the “built in subwoofers” obviously cannot overcome the laws of physics, I found bass performance to be quite strong. I used an optical audio source and everything I tested from music to movies to video games (complete with convincing booming of battleship shells as they were fired) sounded excellent. In addition to truly superb stereo separation, there are simulated surround sound and elevation effects which, while not a replacement for a true surround speaker setup, offer an impressively broad and rich sound stage.
Yamaha offers a broad range of options to make it easy to control the speakers, including a hand held remote (batteries included), CEC control from devices like smart TV’s, and a smartphone control app which connects via Bluetooth and allows configuration of various effects and sound modes in addition to basic volume and source control. Kudos to Yamaha for also including easy to use touch controls on the unit itself so you can easily turn it on or off or adjust volume without having to reach for a remote.
Pros:
- Attractive, thoughtful design and high quality construction mean this device will look great in any living room.
- Audio performance that exceeds expectations for a setup of this size (and without a dedicated separate subwoofer too).
- Outstanding sound stage and stereo separation make everything from music to movies to games sound great.
- Options to help make movie and TV dialog louder and clearer
- Easy to use remote and front panel controls.
- Can be table or wall mounted.
Cons:
- No options for rear speakers (but there is an output for a separate subwoofer)
- No built-in support for Chromecast or AirPlay
If you’re looking for an easy to setup and easy to use option to dramatically improve the sound from your TV without the hassle of rear speakers and a dedicated receiver, this sound bar should fit the bill very nicely and is easy to recommend.

Great design, outstanding smooth sound
on December 22, 2020
Posted by: PhilipM
from Atlanta, GA
These are simply the best sounding, most comfortable, and most thoughtfully designed true wireless earphones I’ve ever experienced. Care and though is clearly evident in every aspect of this product from the understated design to the helpful feature set, all of which is excellently implemented.
Pros:
- Outstanding design and execution
- Very comfortable for long listening sessions
- Beautifully smooth and rich sound without the need for high volume levels
- Bass is strong without being overpowering
- Excellent battery life (Yamaha claims up to 35 hours even with noise cancelling engaged and my experience suggests this is reasonable)
- Excellent noise cancellation and an “ambient sound” mode that actually works
- Optional 3.5mm connector
- High quality travel case
Cons:
- The travel case is a little on the large side for packing in a small briefcase
- The microphone for phone calls is usable but not ideal
From the moment you open this package the quality and thoughtfulness are instantly apparent. The construction is of very high quality and the adjustable connectors that join the padded strap to each earpiece appear very durable. The highly readable L + R labelling on the inside of the ear cups is genius and makes it easy to instantly orient the headset when you pick it up. Controls are simple: power, noise cancellation mode, volume, and play/pause/answer buttons. The device provides spoken feedback to confirm actions such as changing the noise cancellation mode so there’s no confusion as to what the outcome of a particular button press.
But it’s the sound quality where these headphones really shine. I’ve tried these with music and TV/movie audio and they sound fantastic. Sound is incredibly smooth and rich while also being free of over-amplified bass or harsh treble. These phones support Aptx and other high quality bluethooth codecs, so the source quality is already reasonable, but the digital signal processing is simply outstanding in several ways:
1. The DSP is tuned to naturally compensate for the frequency response of the human ear, elevating certain frequencies that could otherwise require higher overall volume to be clearly audible. This allows one to hear the full frequency range of the content to which one is listening without the need for excessive volume. Yamaha calls this “listening care” and it works really well.
2. The DSP does a fantastic job with both noise cancellation and ambient sound modes without compromising playback quality.
3. At least to my ears, there are very few discernable processing artifacts, something which is seldom true with headphones that need to reconstruct audio from the relatively low fidelity Bluetooth affords and something especially rare when noise cancellation is involved.
These headphones are a great showcase for Yamaha’s audio prowess (and restraint) and are easy to recommend to anybody looking for great general purpose wireless headphones.

Perfect for video calls and the new way we work
on November 2, 2020
Posted by: PhilipM
from Atlanta, GA
This Logitech webcam is the perfect companion for days filled with video calls to colleagues and family alike. The device is small, attractively designed, and works very well with a minimum of user setup or intervention. The device installs quickly and easily into any available USB port and the image is clear enough with up to 720p resolution (more than enough for video call purposes). Audio is also very clear and the mounting position on top of any monitor (or even laptop screen) provides a good view of the speaker in most situations, being angled slightly down toward the subject.
The best feature, however, is the excellent control of subject lighting. As many of us are discovering in this age of increased video call usage, not all settings are conducive to good lighting for video calls and subjects are frequently very dark when they have windows or other light sources behind them. I've used this cam for many hours of business calls with varied light conditions and I can confidently say that this Logitech cam does an outstanding job of correcting for a broad range of lighting situations without the need for extra lights - far better than any other cams I've used. The fact that this feature just works by default and without the need for special software, tweaking or user intervention makes it all the more useful.
If you're looking for a great no nonsense webcam to give you a professional look on your upcoming video calls, this one has you covered.
Pros:
- Quick and easy setup with no special software required.
- Mounting position is ideal to provide a good view of the subject. Cams built into laptop lids tend to look up at the subject, which can result in a less flattering view.
- Outstanding correction for a wide variety of lighting issues with excellent dynamic range and highlighting of the subject.
- Solid audio performance.
- In my testing, worked perfectly with Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
- Indicator light clearly shows when the cam is active.
Cons:
- Some may wish for 1080p vs. 720p resolution

Great design + ease of use + solid performance
on October 30, 2020
Posted by: PhilipM
from Atlanta, GA
The Tineco Floor One S3 is a thoughtfully designed device the combines vacuuming and cleaning for hard floors (including sealed hard wood) in one easy to use device. The cleaner is cordless, light weight, and has wheels – all of which make this device much easier to use than traditional or steam mops. In addition, the vacuuming function picks up dirt (vs. just dragging it around the floor in a mop) and sucks up excess water, speeding drying time and minimizing the chance of water damage on hard wood floors.
Pros:
- Uses separate clean and dirty water tanks to ensure only clean water (and cleaning solution) are applied to the floor.
- Easy to use and effective, we found that this device left our sealed hard wood kitchen floors much cleaner than our usual mopping process.
- Wheeled design is makes cleaning easy (and easy on your back).
- Battery power eliminates the need to deal with a power cord.
- Helpful display shows current action, remaining battery, and status messages (such as the need to empty the tank or clean the roller).
- Excellent charging stand also prevents any potential for residual water to seep out and damage floors.
- Voice prompts contribute to ease of use by giving clear directions any time user action is needed.
- Self-cleaning functions for the roller and dirt channels.
- Attractive design
Cons:
- Battery run time can be as short as 20 minutes in “max” mode.
- Dirt sensor display can be inconsistent.
- Some especially “stuck on” dirt may need to be manually scraped off the floor.
- The compact nature of this device means the water tanks are a little small and thus need to be emptied/filled every few minutes.
The Floor One S3 works a little like a carpet cleaner in that it takes water from a clean water tank (including cleaning solution if you elect to use it), applies it to clean the floor, and then sucks it into a dirty water tank. This two tank method is a great way to help ensure that, unlike traditional mopping, you’re not putting dirty water back onto the floors as you clean. It also helps to ensure that excess water is not left on the floor. The device uses a roller to agitate the cleaner and remove dirt from the floor. In general this works well and the cleaner left our floors looking and smelling great. In some cases, dirt was especially stuck to the floor and we needed to manually scrape it, but this would have been true for a steam mop too.
Using the cleaner is easy. Add a cap of cleaning solution and fill the clean water tank, then clean the floor just like you would with a regular vacuum. The machine will periodically prompt you to empty the dirty water tank or fill the clean water tank as you go. The amount of dirt in the dirty water tank was ample evidence of the effectiveness of the cleaner. After cleaning, simply empty and rinse out the dirty water tank and set the cleaner back on the charging stand. The base of the stand completely protects the floor from any residual water. Once back on the base, the device auto-detects the level of dirt on the roller and will prompt an auto-cleaning cycle if needed. In our experience the self-cleaning function worked great and left the roller quote clean for the next use.
This is a connected device and you can use the associated app for things like checking charging status and firmware updates, but the use of the app is not really required for regular operation.
Overall this is a first rate little hard floor cleaner that’s easy to use, effective, well designed, and attractive. Its performance makes it easy to recommend.

Control TVs, lights and stereos with this black Sevenhugs smart remote. The intuitive touch screen offers simplicity, and the Smart Remote companion app allows the user to customize the remote's interface for different devices. This Sevenhugs smart remote lets you connect electronics and services via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, infrared and smart hubs for a simple installation.

Will this take the place of a charter spectrum remote, and a TCL TV remote simultaneously?

This remote should be able to replace any combination of traditional infrared remotes. It will generally not replace remotes that use custom RF or Wifi control. Even if your remote is not in the database, there's a built in IR learning function so the unit can learn the commands you want to use as you perform them on your old remote.

when you are in a call is only the right one supposed to work but with everything else, they both work?

Does the HR Block Premium package come with a State Tax program ?

Yes - you choose and download the state after installing the main federal return software. No additional charge, but there can be additional charges to e-file state returns, at least from my experience in prior years (federal e-file is included).

What is the refresh rate in hz?

120 Hz native refresh, but the software interpolates at 240Hz. Not sure what the difference is in practice, but can definitely say that this unit offers a very quick refresh rate and doesn't suffer from ghosting.
