Ryan Adams takes these songs to a different place by reimagining them as he would have written them, slightly brooding with his signature reverb-drenched vocals over a four piece rock band. Clearly there was more time given to some songs than to others, both in the tracking and mix phases, but I find the entire album to be a good, cohesive listen all the way through. He exceeds expectations, actually, by managing to get through all ten tracks without any hint of irony, taking the songs (which really are quite solid) to a totally different place. Worth buying.
There's nobody else out there who can meld chamber music, piano concerto, and rock n roll like Ben Folds. This was an ambitious project and he pulled it off.
I loved Silversun Pickups' first album. Their brand of distortion was unique and novel back then. Then came two more albums that sounded sonically similar but lacked the catchy melodies and hooks of their debut. For Better Nature it seems that someone finally told them to dial back the broken fuzz guitars and to dial the songwriting back up a little. There's still plenty of the fuzz and the signature double-tracked octave vocals, but there's also clean and acoustic guitar and a few other cool choices. Worth a listen.
