I had a easy time with these bulbs and Wemo products in general at first, then it became difficult to connect to bulbs, and other wemo products to wifi, even with a router right in my room I was using the products in. If you can get them to work, they are wonderful, but if you have difficulty connecting them to wifi, it can be a pain.

Will this work with directtv
I'm not sure I assume they do, I have a 4 tb and a 3 tb and have them hoped through my xbox one and Tivoli I would assume it does but double check.

Do I need a WeMo light switch, or installing the light bulb will suffice for remote operation?
You don't need a Wemo light switch, but you will need a Wemo link, which allows you to connect something like 50 bulbs or more to it, I just had to much trouble getting the bulbs to appear on the app. I gave up and bought a LIFX smart light, I highlyrics recommend them, a lil more expensive, but no switch or link just the light bulb and your wifi to connect to the LIFX.

Work with standard lamps?
Pretty simple: just looking for an LED I can screw into a conventional lamp. Will this work? TY
Yes, they work perfectly fine in most lamps even when you don't use the app and the wifi feature, which can be difficult to get to work, but the bulbs works perfect as LED I have one in my nightstand lamp.
